  • There is some overlap in the roles of coaches, mentors, counselors, and consultants. And it may be hard to distinguish one from the other. But it’s important as a coach that you understand your role and what you provide so that you establish clear expectations for yourself and your client and so you don’t step into territory that may require licensure.

This was well explained. Thanks to this video I realized that what I am doing with my students is coaching. I have learnt to ask them questions because I believe the answer lies in them.

A lot of YT Ads seem to sell coaching but it seems like it's a hybrid. The Ad is I did it so let me show you how (Mentor) Get on a call ask you questions to gain clarity of what's the problem (consulting) If you sign up for 1-on-1 and they just ask you questions the entire time (coaching). Some courses, programs or memberships (includes: mentor, coaching and consulting)

Mentoring: Advising someone based on your previous experience.
A lot of telling what to do. A lot of explaining how and why to do it. Based on your experience which is really valuable to warn people of direction not to take and shortcut. (Requires no licensing) (My AB for your B to A )
Counseling: Solving the problem of the past in order to move toward your future. (Often requires licensing) B - A
Consulting: I am going to tell you how to fix a problem. (May require licensing) A
I have a solution, assessment, tools to fit your situation. May fix the problem for you. Hire them to implement the solution. Client waiting to be told what the answers are to the problem. (A)
Coaching: Moving you from where you are right now to where you want to be.
Coaches really believe their client has their answers and your job is to provide a safe space for the client to honest about where there are in life. To evaluate their hopes, dreams, and desires. To identify where their obstacles are to be able to strategize tactics to maneuver through and around those obstacles as to what the best approach might be for success. Ultimately a coach asks powerful questions to clients to get the answer they need to move forward. You help people move in a healthy and functioning way towards the please they want to be. Coaching is dealing with an opportunity not dealing with problems. A B

Thanks. This is so so enlightening and clear. I don't have to know EVERYTHING in all the industries in order to help someone move ahead in life. Thanks again, my coach.

Thank you Valorie for your insight, I believe coaching is embracing your full whole story, finding your sweet spot from your past wounds that you have healed from to work experience that is what you qualified to do and then your own life experience meaning failures, mistakes, laurels and bringing all of those together to coach another person find their own sweet spot. Once you can master that for your own life, finding yes the opportunity in bringing them all together, you can coach another human being by asking them questions based on your own framework of life to them finding their own. God waist nothing, that past trauma you have full awareness of will help greatly, what you have studied over the years too and your experience in living.

This is a great explanation. I am licensed as a professional counselor who has been called to coach, consult and mentor others.... I have to explain and make clear which role I am operating in as we develop the professional relationship.
