True, but after playing through it properly once every future play through goes... Get quest, go to chapel, skip to midnight, speak to Glartir, skip 24 hours, speak to Glartir, rinse and repeat until you have to kill him
I remember one time watching my sister play Oblivion. She was busy decorating her house by placing potions on shelves and such when all of a sudden the camera spins around and some guy is shouting at her. Scared us half to death. Turns out that Glarthir broke into her house just to tell her that the place is too public and that they should meet somewhere less crowded. And somehow people claim that Skyrim is better than Oblivion. No amount of giant club space launching or vertical horses will ever be as amazing as this one moment.

Ahh you never experienced the most unexpected appearance of the imperial or stormcloak messengers in Skyrim? I find amusing that they spawn and always run towards you just to turn around and run away. That makes for some weird situation, like that one time the imperial entered the chamber where Nocturnal makes you a Nightingale. He entered in the middle of the ceremony, turned around and left. Love this games and the weird and random stuff that happens 😁
This quest legit fooled me the first time i did it, probably because I was in a rut of just following whatever the npc questgivers said and not considering they might be lying, till about the half-way point in the quest, then it dawned on me he was nuts and I thought that was such a great twist.
I think the twist would be better if they didn't name the quest "Paranoia". Maybe a more sneaky title would be better, like "Conspiracy", or "They are watching!", or something like that. The title makes you suspicious of Glarthir since the beggining. Still, one of the best quests in Oblivion.
@Striker I watched the whole video, which was weird because in my game, I leveled up the first lady's disposition, and she said that she had been watching from time to time because she had a slight crush on him. It wasn't to the extent that he thought but she was watching him
There's really a conspiracy, though -- at least there was on all my playthroughs. If you read the target's diaries, two will have entries about their Glarthir-stalking, and one will write about how Glarthir is crazy and seems to think he's up to something.
I don't know if it's better, but it works, and it's through the Arena questline. By completing the Gray Prince quest, when you kill the Grand Champion the game incorrectly records it as murder, so the Dark Brotherhood contacts you because of it. And either because you were in the Arena, or because there are no actual NPCs in the Arena besides the Grand Champion and you, you won't get a bounty for it despite it being "murder."
My favorite Dark Brotherhood task is when you go to the mansion, play hide and kill and you get a villa for yourself. Then, you have two villas in Skingrad. That city is definitely where I would live if given the chance.
I got lost when i first got the game,ended up in skingrad and looked around since my cousin said some npcs give directions. I was genuinely looking for the imperial city when he told me he didnt know the way.
He might have forgot that you can fast travel to all the citys at the start of the game. Its just the minor places like forts, campsites, caves, shrines, etc that you gotta find on your own
Hey Mason there is actually some unique dialogue with the three "suspects" if you talk to them while spying on them. Also you can use Glarthir's key to get into his house and there is some loot in a basket.
I did his quest once years ago, that was enough, so now I just hit him with a frenzy spell as soon as I meet him. He goes nuts, the guards take him out, I take the keys off his corpse and loot his house
One of my favourite quests in Oblivion was the one with the vampire lady in castle skingrad where you had to help the argonian to escape...! With all the hidden doors and stuff...!
I've honestly never done the spying for him, I just told him what he wanted to hear, told the guards and then went into his house to take the gold in the basket. So this is interesting for me to watch someone actually do the investigating.
I used this quest to get his soul for Hermaous Mora. I told him what he believed and ratted him out. Right before the guard killed him I cast a soul trap spell on him. It was a hoot.
If you use the staff of worms on Glarthir's dead body, the guards will become hostile towards him and constantly attack him. It's fun to watch him die over and over again!
I'll never underestimate Cantinas power to reawaken my Nostalgia for this game. I always want to reroll a class and have a go when I watch these videos.
I simply loved this quest. It's so annoyignly beautiful. Also: "How are you?" "I've been better" "Really? What a shame" "See you" "Farewell!" God. Oblivion at its peak. Best. Game. Ever. Seriously and Sarcastically. Period.
They were all so suspicious! You should take care of Glahrtir, as you did. But also you should take care of them all! Also the captain, hope you will fix it in the next video :D :D
It's highly likely he was indeed being watched, but not by the people he thought. It was probably the Aldmeri Dominion. They wanted to make sure Glarthir wasn't a threat by making all the "conspiracy" suspects drive him crazy. This ended in his death. This cleared the way for a Cyrodill invasion. An axe wielding Glarthir would have probably held the line in the Great War, defeating the AD. Hence why he needed to die first.
If you loot his dead body and enter his house he actually has letters he writes to his father and one of the letters mentions that he suspects you as a double agent. Anyway, I feel bad for glarthir the devs did a good job at showing the despair of schizophrenia
This makes me want a dark brother hood quest we’re you have to use illusion magic or sneaking to trick a target into insanity killing them selves, like you take there things wait a few days put them back, make noises, make them think their being watched. Would be good
The best ending to this quest is to drive Glarthir insane, and protect him while he slaughters his targets and the guards. Who else did this? Another good one is to kite him to your Bravil home, kill him there and use him as decoration. I bet no one but me did this ...
By the way, the reason I did it was because I made a character to be a psychotic skooma addict, thief-type of dude. I figured the shadiest home you could get was in Bravil, so I decorated the home with skulls and bones and human flesh, made a mess of everything. But I felt that it lacked a special touch. So I came to the conclusion that a dead Glarthir in your home would be the way to go. Unfortunately had to use console commands to kill the guards to bring him safely into the house, as you cant bring his corpse through the door.
I know that Cicero isn't mer (even in-game files labels him as "breton"). But for roleplaying sake let's just say that he was wearing fake elf ears in Oblivion or maybe he is elf and cut the tips off for Skyrim (lol)

I know I'm late to say this, but if David and/or his brother kill Glarthir in brood daylight it's hilarious because after if you ask about Glarthir they'll say "Glathir? He just turned up dead, guess someone finally got tired of his crazy behavior." Or something along those lines. The gaurd can also join in the fight and will say the same thing in that scenario.
Imbued 2006 was a great time! I played oblivion after two years of skyrim and oblivion is one of the best games I ever played. Even though people told me not to because of graphics.
Chuemuachi lee i love everything about oblivion. Its has its flaws but the atmosphere and quests are unrivaled imo. So much fun in that game compared to skyrim imo. A lot more love put into oblivion

If you tell him you aren't going to murder anyone he actually goes on an axe murder rampage. If you give the guards the note they just go find and murder him then tell you he was just attempting to commit an axe murder rampage even if he's just casually walking around doing nothing.

I remember this quest. When Glarthir tried to kill my Khajiit, I had him acrobat jumping down the street saying 'Catch me! C'mon, Glarthir, catch me!' until the Guards took Glarthir out.
Imo the biggest jerks tend to be pompous high and dark elves (bosmer are usually super nice), orcs, imperials, nords-- nicest NPCs I’ve encountered are usually argonians, khajiits (even tho they tend to be treated like crap by everyone else in the game).
I actually kind of love that the same race is represented by one voice actor. I like knowing he's a Bosmer just from his voice, also, I can pretend He's Fimmion.
I once "investigated" the suspects, and by "investigate," I mean my character fell asleep while tailing them. Then, I lied to Glarthir about Davide, broke into the Surilie house, and killed him. Then, I showed the note to the brother and watched him kill Glarthir. But the brother never attacked me for some reason, even though I actually killed Davide right in front of him 🤷 Oblivion AI at its finest.
The first time that I did this quest I genuinely followed bernadette around, I thought that maybe that glarthir wasnt crazy after all. But then it dawned on me that he was actually crazy.
I have only done this quest once and never again. Glarthir is just...annoying with him running up to you and always saying not now. It’s a good quest, but I hate the guy
i ended up killing toutius sextius for glarthir, because he needed to be put out of his misery for having such a name. plus, glarthir really does pay well. got me a good 1500 coins, i got to kill someone, and now glarthir is free from him. win-win.
We can actually take the rewards of the quest even glathir is dead by take the key of his house, go to his house and look for a bracket. And when u loot the bracket there's plenty of gold haha...
Fun Fact: The doors to Summitmist Manor are scripted so that NPCs can never leave, even after the quest is finished. After I beat all the quests in Oblivion, I locked every single guard in Cyrodiil in that house. No more psychic guards, and the only law enforcement left are me and the guilds.
@@Bauglir100 i learned that the hard way. i had a follower, the khajiit recruit from the dark brotherhood. i went inside, then left, and he didn't come out. he was fucking stuck inside. i ended up having to reload a previous save just to get him back. that house is cursed.
When I did this quest I started following the first person for about 2 minutes, then I just went back to glarthir going to guess the answers, and just said that no one was following him. Once he tried to kill me I just ran away.
I don’t why people hate glarthir so much his quest is quite nice actually he pays you well i sided with glartjir you get paid plus I thought people like murdering having them interesting characaters that are crazy is better than having three random people
Fun tip: You don't have to go to any of the people or follow them,all you have to do is talk to glarthir and wait 24 hours and say he was right or wrong,if you keep saying you were right he gets very happy with you.
Just finished this quest last night. If I didn't recently learned about radiant AI, I would've thought there is something more deeper going on with this quest. Still I followed NPCs around watching what they did during this quest and was afraid that I need some sneaking skill or chameleon spells to use in order to truly know for sure if there is any conspiracy going on. As much as it was just for show, I almost enjoyed it and thought if there is any other way to end this quest. I say almost is simply because I was dumb enough to turn into vampire.
The guy in the dream world quest where you enter his dream to save him there's an alternate way to finish the quest by killing him before entering his dream unfortunately because he's marked as essential you cannot complete the quest that way unless you either make him non-essential or install a mod that makes it possible for you to kill essential NPCs.
The first time I play this game, knowing I can just skip the main quest (as the game itself tells you) I just came to this city bc I loved the name of it. So this dude ran into me talking that way and I was thinking "oh, this may be interesting", then I did his quest but thinking about the name of it I just could see through it meaning and just prank the guy, waiting 24 hours in the chapel and then I lied. For like, the three times or so he ask you to follow those people. Then, when he order me to kill them, I just speak with the guards and they fucking killed him. I didn't know you about any of this game before playing it, but now I wish to be less aware of the meaning of the quest's name from the very begining to play it the way it was intended and maybe roleplaying, telling him the truth and see what happen. And, who knows, maybe he was right all along and some people were trying to hurt him, idk, maybe for racist motives or some shit. Turns out, I did it. I follow those punks that never pay any attention to the guy and then I tell him the truth everytime. He pay you less money for each follow and at the end just claims that you are part of the whole roose against him so he attack you and that's it. God, I love this game. How wonderful it will be visiting cyrodil again, with better grafics (but not the styleart of skyrim to the characters, I totally agree with you on that, here they seem more diverse), maybe being able to use the thu'um if you are nord or something. Just the writting of the quest, it was far better in the prequel.
This mission bugged my game once, basically i had actived the mission of the prophet of anvil (idk how it's called) where you have to pray in every shrine all around cyrodill, but i wasn't actively looking for the altars, just doing any other mission and wandering for all cyrodill, and when i found a shrine i pray to it. But then i get this glarthir's mission, he sent me to spy the townsfolk and i did, but he offered money so i just telled him what he wanted to hear, and well i got to the end where he tells me to k!ll those people, obviously i didn't wanted to do that so i tell that guard whose name i don't remember, the problem is that it was nightime at the moment the guard was looking for him, or i'm not sure but the thing was glarthir was on his house sleeping i guess, so the guard came in and killed him, but the door was locked, the mission was done but i couldn't event steal glarthir's house bc it was locked XD But well, all that doesn't really matters, the problem is that the gods really did not like the outcome that mission had, they never forgive me for that and the prophet mission was screwed

As a kid I was scared of him and the adoring fan, they always jumpscared me. Now I just slay them right as soon as I even see them.

I love how his "i dont know the way to the imperial city" thing when you talk to him is supposed to sound weird and suspicious but because it's Oblivion he doesn't sound even slightly out of place

I remember this quest. When Glarthir tried to kill my Khajiit, I had him acrobat jumping down the street saying 'Catch me! C'mon, Glarthir, catch me!' until the Guards took Glarthir out.
Imo the biggest jerks tend to be pompous high and dark elves (bosmer are usually super nice), orcs, imperials, nords-- nicest NPCs I’ve encountered are usually argonians, khajiits (even tho they tend to be treated like crap by everyone else in the game).
I actually kind of love that the same race is represented by one voice actor. I like knowing he's a Bosmer just from his voice, also, I can pretend He's Fimmion.

this quest is the epitome of the maniac being dragged away by the police officers at the end of the movie, yelling "I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY I KNEW IT"

I once "investigated" the suspects, and by "investigate," I mean my character fell asleep while tailing them. Then, I lied to Glarthir about Davide, broke into the Surilie house, and killed him. Then, I showed the note to the brother and watched him kill Glarthir. But the brother never attacked me for some reason, even though I actually killed Davide right in front of him 🤷 Oblivion AI at its finest.
The first time that I did this quest I genuinely followed bernadette around, I thought that maybe that glarthir wasnt crazy after all. But then it dawned on me that he was actually crazy.
Glarthir is crazy, like i said crazy, crazy.
I have only done this quest once and never again. Glarthir is just...annoying with him running up to you and always saying not now.

i ended up killing toutius sextius for glarthir, because he needed to be put out of his misery for having such a name. plus, glarthir really does pay well. got me a good 1500 coins, i got to kill someone, and now glarthir is free from him. win-win.
We can actually take the rewards of the quest even glathir is dead by take the key of his house, go to his house and look for a bracket. And when u loot the bracket there's plenty of gold haha...
Can you do the Dark Brotherhood quest with the house party?
Fun Fact: The doors to Summitmist Manor are scripted so that NPCs can never leave, even after the quest is finished. After I beat all the quests in Oblivion, I locked every single guard in Cyrodiil in that house. No more psychic guards, and the only law enforcement left are me and the guilds.
@@Bauglir100 i learned that the hard way. i had a follower, the khajiit recruit from the dark brotherhood. i went inside, then left, and he didn't come out. he was fucking stuck inside. i ended up having to reload a previous save just to get him back. that house is cursed.
When I did this quest I started following the first person for about 2 minutes, then I just went back to glarthir going to guess the answers, and just said that no one was following him. Once he tried to kill me I just ran away.

Fun tip: You don't have to go to any of the people or follow them,all you have to do is talk to glarthir and wait 24 hours and say he was right or wrong,if you keep saying you were right he gets very happy with you.

Just finished this quest last night. If I didn't recently learned about radiant AI, I would've thought there is something more deeper going on with this quest. Still I followed NPCs around watching what they did during this quest and was afraid that I need some sneaking skill or chameleon spells to use in order to truly know for sure if there is any conspiracy going on. As much as it was just for show, I almost enjoyed it and thought if there is any other way to end this quest. I say almost is simply because I was dumb enough to turn into vampire.

The most remarkable thing about this quest is that there really *is* a conspiracy against him!
The guy in the dream world quest where you enter his dream to save him there's an alternate way to finish the quest by killing him before entering his dream unfortunately because he's marked as essential you cannot complete the quest that way unless you either make him non-essential or install a mod that makes it possible for you to kill essential NPCs.
The first time I play this game, knowing I can just skip the main quest (as the game itself tells you) I just came to this city bc I loved the name of it. So this dude ran into me talking that way and I was thinking "oh, this may be interesting", then I did his quest but thinking about the name of it I just could see through it meaning and just prank the guy, waiting 24 hours in the chapel and then I lied. For like, the three times or so he ask you to follow those people. Then, when he order me to kill them, I just speak with the guards and they fucking killed him. I didn't know you about any of this game before playing it, but now I wish to be less aware of the meaning of the quest's name from the very begining to play it the way it was intended and maybe roleplaying, telling him the truth and see what happen. And, who knows, maybe he was right all along and some people were trying to hurt him, idk, maybe for racist motives or some shit.
Turns out, I did it. I follow those punks that never pay any attention to the guy and then I tell him the truth everytime. He pay you less money for each follow and at the end just claims that you are part of the whole roose against him so he attack you and that's it. God, I love this game. How wonderful it will be visiting cyrodil again, with better grafics (but not the styleart of skyrim to the characters, I totally agree with you on that, here they seem more diverse), maybe being able to use the thu'um if you are nord or something. Just the writting of the quest, it was far better in the prequel.

This mission bugged my game once, basically i had actived the mission of the prophet of anvil (idk how it's called) where you have to pray in every shrine all around cyrodill, but i wasn't actively looking for the altars, just doing any other mission and wandering for all cyrodill, and when i found a shrine i pray to it.
But then i get this glarthir's mission, he sent me to spy the townsfolk and i did, but he offered money so i just telled him what he wanted to hear, and well i got to the end where he tells me to k!ll those people, obviously i didn't wanted to do that so i tell that guard whose name i don't remember, the problem is that it was nightime at the moment the guard was looking for him, or i'm not sure but the thing was glarthir was on his house sleeping i guess, so the guard came in and killed him, but the door was locked, the mission was done but i couldn't event steal glarthir's house bc it was locked XD
But well, all that doesn't really matters, the problem is that the gods really did not like the outcome that mission had, they never forgive me for that and the prophet mission was screwed
