Phil I absolutely LOVE my new Chieftain Custom Low D Tuneable!! It's easy to play with my small hands and the tone is beautiful! I have a few other Low Ds but they can't touch this one. No need to search any further for my perfect Low D whistle because this is it! It truly IS a real joy to play!! 🥰
Just received my Chieftain Custom Low D from Thoman. Now that's how I want a whistle to respond. Most excellent quality all around. I appreciate your years of experience in trying to continually improve the instrument. I am thoroughly impressed. It will be played regularly.
That is one of the finest I have seen and heard. It is good to see these videos and hear your playing and thoughts on how you work on improvements. I recently got my old 270407 V3 back from a dear friend who never played it. That was one precision mechanical piece of work. After following you for a while I clearly see a top quality instrument. Thank you for doing these videos.
That V3 was never broke in til til last couple of days. I like to walk when I play around town. Low notes get lost in the noise more these days and I have been looking for a timbre that was solid and strong on the low end. The compression on the high end is sounding super after a couple of days. The F/F# is super smooth. C is very specific attack. The most precision mechanical whistle I have ever played.
Sorry, a whistle has to be broken in?? If this sounds a stupid question to everyone else I apologise in advance, but can you tell me how and why the sound would change after a few days? I can tell that the sound changes after it's warmed up, but how does the whistle change between never having been played and having been played for a few days?
I have purchased this low whistle last month, and I'm having a weird problem: when I play, a lot of condensation/water forms on the bottom of the bevel (where there's a small gap with the tube). This affects the sound (as if it was blocked), and the water that accumulates and is blown out soaks my trousers (I play sitting down). Have you already experienced it? What's more, as it's summer, it's not as if the instrument was cold (I'm worried about next winter!). I'm a whistle beginner, but I've been playing the boehm classical flute for 30 years, and I don't have any particular problem with over-salivation/condensation.
Now that's very interesting!! Perfect adjustments! Ordering one now (the fizz or chiff and the back pressure improvs are a big deal to me, nice ergonomics also, a deal)
Phil, I've owned a V4 for a long time, one of my favorite whistles still to this day. I also own a v5, but I prefer the v4 because it sounds a bit more open and less compressed/restricted. The windways look completely different on the v4 and the v5, so I know a lot has changed with the design and sound of the v5. In your opinion, where would the custom sit when comparing these two. I'm just afraid that I might prefer the sound of the v4 compared to the custom, especially if it falls in line closer to the v5. Thanks
So great. I really got this awesome instrument. It is a lot of fun, really nice sound. However, I have difficulties in playing the high C#. The third high D is no problem, all other notes are really fine. I am not so into these whistles (I played indian bansuri and normal flute). Does anybody know this effect? Or is this problem specific to the chieftain custom ....
It seems like he is mentioning the differences in this clip. In short, the custom is easier to play and the sound is slightly brighter, or are you referring to other aspects?
Hi, although there is a stretch, the new Chieftain Custom have a better hole spacing than the others in the range giving people with smaller hands a chance to enjoy the low D whistle. Follow the tutorials on the kerrywhsitles site and take care to cover the holes well before learning toons. All the info is there.

When I grow up I want to play like that, I am only 73,Barry.
Hilarious hahahaha!!

Awesome whistle. I got my custom whistle today and it is so much easier to play than the normal v5. Thank you so much, phil. Great work.
You were the first.
@@philhardywhistles Next whistle hopefully includes an autograph of you :-P

The CỤSTOM looks and sounds excellent. Nice detailing and delightful new collet. Wish I hadn't just bought the V5 tuneable!
I did warn everyone sometime ago.
Kerrywhistles you did indeed, Phil. It was about three months ago (before the warning!). Always room for another whistle though... 😝

Just ordered one of these through Thomann! Really curious as to how it'll sound (i wanted an alternative for when my flute-playing lips get tired xD)
I love the old F# hole I have big hands though, looking forward to receiving my two.
sounds amazing. Would love to get the tabs for tune you played at 0:41.
Damn it! Now I'm going to have to save more money! Goodbye V5, hello Custom!
Just ordered the custom! Can't wait!
Looks and sounds beautiful, already ordered.
Me to 😊

It is closer to the V5.
Sounds Wonderfull

What are the differences between the Custom Low D and the V5 Tunable Low D? I can't really tell from your website, so I asked.

Nice!
What kind of case comes with the Chieftain Custom?
A hard two piece plastic case.
@@philhardywhistles Thanks!
!!!
Was thinking about getting one .could I learn on this for a beginner?
Yes, anyone can start on this whistle.
I am looking to start on a Low D whistle would this be less difficult for a female with thin fingers than other models?@@philhardywhistles
