I ended up getting one of these after watching several reviews like this. The tones are outstanding and the TriSound switches give you so many tone options! Neck feels great, abalone binding and fretboard inlays are beautiful. Set neck and Alnico II pickups give you great sustain and Gibson-like tone but easier to navigate than your typical LP.

I really appreciate the direct comparison of the tri-sound switch settings, and reusing the same licks as you work through the different settings. Gives a much clearer picture of the range of sounds you can get and how they really compare.

After nearly one year with one of the first ones, that came to europe, I can say: She is an absolute jewel. In the first weeks I sort of struggled with the plastic nut and soon replaced it, first with the Ibanez bone one, soon later with a compensated one (Earvana). On my jewel the F-hole (here's the word^^) isn't finished perfectly. There is a tear on the inside, but I don't care about that, as well as I don't care about the gold finish being different on bridge and tailpiece.
I got mine in search for a replacement to my old '78 Performer, a TriSound LP "copy" with a hollow top and a very thin neck. The Performer needed some time in the workshop for time intensive repairs. The AR520 Neck is not exactly the same, but very close. Fast for me, even with the glossy finish. The S58 Pickups are surprisingly close to the S70 on the Performer. Maybe the S70 lost some "power" over the last 40 years or the current S58 are hotter than they were 30 years ago. Anyway they sound great in this guitar (I tried S58 from the late 80s in another chinese "Artist", where they didn't do a good job).
About the woods: It doesn't matter how they are called, as long as the results are that good. The fretboard ist superb and the reddish look fits the instrument very well. On a semi-hollow construction I also don't give a lot on body wood since I played a 339 copy made of beech plywood with a basswood top and a maple neck.
Can it rock? Yes it can. Maybe even better than you think. In this video we got a few samples, but the real Power is unleashed on medium stages, on loud amps like back in golden times. This is where the 520 shows her supremacy agains a (modern) Les Paul or PRS Semi. She sings in tune, where a LP keeps silent and the McCarty produces uncontrolled feedback. Maybe it is the construction with just one F-hole (and a solid lower body half) that makes her sing this way I do love so much. The other point related to this feedback-control, not mentioned in the video is its capability for more than jazz or rock. Neck in parallel on a clean Amp with some chorus on one side or bridge in Humbucker boosted to high gain let you see the versatilty of this instrument. There is no need for another guitar from jazz to hard rock.

I just bought one of these in a way I thought I'd never do: Unseen and off Amazon loll! For reals though... I got a "refurb" for $600 and it's clearly brand new and flawless. I have got to say...This axe is (at least in my case) FLAWLESS and extremely High Quality and Fit and finish is amazing! Setup was perfect...I'm blown away!

I bought one of these about 4 months ago. It is a great guitar for a lot of genre. The neck is really nice, very much like a Gibson slim taper 60's neck which I like. I have a number of Ibanez guitars going back to my 1976 Ibanez Les Paul copy and my 1982 Ibanez AM50. Both are still among my favorite guitars. I love My Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul's but when I do gigs that require the ability to switch from one genre of music to another from song to song, the Ibanez guitars (especially the AM 50) are perfect.

I played one yesterday at the Guitar center. It was the jet black finish version which is spectacular with the Abalone binding and gold hardware. I'm trying to reason why I shouldn't go back today and buy it. Its so similar to my D'Angelico mini DC Sweetwater exclusive. I'm an aspiring jazz player and I got the same impression you did, but I was lost trying to figure out what the little switches did, so thank you for the tutorial. I may go back there today and spend some more time with the 520 and my mini DC for a more in depth comparison. Wish me luck. Excellent review, thanks for posting " f hole"

@@TheGuitarGeek No problem! That's why I say that you forced me to buy that guitar; it looked mighty purty, sounded great and I trust you. You demoed a guitar pedal called The Shark, and you said it would work great on bass. Since it was reasonably priced, I was able to purchase one, and it DOES sound great with the bass! I've also used the Shark with a dobro, using a slide. Hilarity ensued.

This guitar ticks a lot of boxes for me. Very few Ibanez-es have the 24 3/4" scale. Dig the fast thin neck/ price point and I like the switching options (and f hole..ha) I'd wager it could rock and with a pickup swap it definitely could. Agreed that it might not be ideal for down tuned Chug lol. Seems like it's put together very well. Great vid!

Yes, this F-hole video is a year old; but still worthy of comment. I am nearly ready to pull the trigger on one of these. I played one at G-center and really liked it. Guitar Geek is right about the build quality and the variety of tones. The only part I disagree with is whether or not this can ROCK. I also have an Ibanez AS-93 with super 58 pickups and it rocks hard. I have a Marshall DSL-40C and a Mesa F-50; and that guitar sounds great with all the gain I can throw at it. The less-hot super 58s stay articulate. Yes the F-holes will allow feedback at very loud levels; but, you'd get kicked off most bar gigs at those levels anyway.

F-hole, Chinese craftsmanship has come a long way in the past few years. That being said, I used to have an original Ibanez AR300 from the 80's, and this can't even get close. Both in craftsmanship and in tones. This one has cheap electronics, cheap pickups (although Ibanez try to capitalize on nostalgia calling them Super 58's (they're not)), cheap hardware, cheap fretwire, and cheap woods (although, hopping on the tonewood debate, it doesn't make that much of a difference). Looking at the price, you can go on Reverb and find an original Japanese AR300 for less than $1000. It's the better option in my honest opinion, and you would also own a piece of Japanese history.
Great videos by the way. From all the guitar geeks and gear reviewers, this one is the most honest, entertaining, and down to earth. I like the guy!

Excellent axe. However, the reason I won't buy another one is due to the three piece neck of which I don't care for in any guitar, and especially because the binding doesn't go around the top of the headstock which aesthetically takes away from it's overall balance and beauty.

Until recently Okoume wood has been used to make plywood for decades. Literally a Chinese guitar manufacturer needed a brownish colored wood that they could sell to their customers as mahogany which it's not. Okoume is not even a variety of mahogany. It has never been used as a tone wood. Ibanez uses Okoume in the AR 325 which is significantly cheaper than this model. The Japanese model is only 2k and it's real mahogany

F Hole. I've lived those Artists for years, back in the early 80s I mate had an original Japanese one and it was stunning. I love the look of this one.

Funny enough I don't think the binding pushes it over the edge in gaudiness but rather the inlays. Not a huge deal though, seems like a really nice guitar... F-hole.

I love overly intricate guitars. I even wish Ibanez would bring back the mandolin headstock.
    Nice review you F-Hole!

It sounds like a typical SG to me - but with less variation in sound than an SG between PU's.

    Is it neck heavy?

You need to move the strap button from the upper horn down to the neck heal. And with a solid wide leather strap it becomes comfortable and stays in place. I love mine after I did that small modification. Remember to pre-drill first, to avoid cracks.

F-hole. 😉 That guitar looks a bit small on you. Nice guitar though. Would be interesting to perhaps play around with the voicings on this guitar like humbucker bridge & then switch to say neck humbucker in parallel 🤔

It SHOULD be neck heavy. Less Pauls slide on their butts all the time. This is much preferable to me.
