- A look at whats involved in the replacement of the timing chain guide, a common failure on these models. It takes me several hours to do, it should take you two days providing you take your time and dont strip a bolt !
Be sure and leave feedback on what I could do to make it more understandable. Хобби
Hey, thank you for this tutorial! Yours is the first tutorial I have seen that the person is 100 percent efficient and doesnt ramble on about a bunch of stupid bullshit instead of focusing on the task at hand. Seriously. You knock it out leave out the bullshit. Excellent job. Thanks again,
Chris
I am 70 years old and have always work around cars. You name I have done it. I have never work on a 97 Maxima I needed to replace timing chain. No big deal have done many timing chains. I looked at all videos and seemed pretty standard. I got all bolts and parts off. cover had a lot of resistance. looked at videos over and over again. There is always a trick or two to some of the cars. After a couple wasted days trying to get the cover off, went back to the videos. Your video was the only one that mentioned a bolt in back of the cover next to the muffler behind the axle. That was the issue. Thanks for the help. Great video.
What a good informative video, no fuss, no drama, just a good competent mechanic. well done...
What I really appreciate about your video is you showed how to do the job without pulling the whole motor. And, you did it in your back yard, gravel driveway, no garage. What can I say? It spoke to me. I have no garage to work in and I'm not about to pull the motor. I just hope I have the stamina to go at it for two days straight. Thanks for the tool tips, too.
Paul Bouscaren Thanks man.
Wow...you make a pain in the arse job seem easy and doable
You have the patience of a saint, great attitude, thanks!
Hello Mr. Banjo Tight!! You sure have helped me out on my Nissan VQ35 engine timingchain repair, watched numerous times already!! Love your videos DFF Atl., Ga ( PS: you won"t catch me buying another Nissan or any mini-van again)
great job. clear concise instruction, step by step. you just saved me 800$ at the mechanics. keep up the good work!
Ferg did you actually do the job?
Thanks for taking your time to make this video. You made it alot simple. Everyone and most websites say to remove engine. Also the two bolts you need to remove under oil pan save an expensive mistake. Thanks again.
This was a great video, very informative. My favorite part : "Failure to do so will bust the timing cover, and ruin your day. "
I must say that this is a great video(s). I have a customer with this problem in a 2002 Altima with the 3.5L. I wasn't going to take the job, but after watching this video, I have no doubts I can get through it and replace those parts without any problems. .
Let me know how it goes, glad it helped.
2012nugget do the chain move when you take the chain off
Marc Smith I’m happy for you but this makes me scared to take my car to a mechanic
@@KayKashi It has been a while and I have done a few now. I actually just got a request to do the guides, tensioner and water pump on an 04 Maxima. I charge a decent amount to do them because I lose an entire day. Your mechanic is going to charge you a decent amount and I hope he pays close attention to what he is doing.
Marc Smith funny enough my mom needs that exact thing done on her 04 maxima. But her mechanic is lazy and would rather buy a whole new engine .
Very thorough. That's the difference between wisdom and knowledge. Your wise through experience. Thank you man.
2012nugget you are a Godsend. With an instructor like you we can all be Nissan specialist. Thank you sir for this video. You are greatly appreciated.
+Shon Carter Thank you as well my friend !
i am not mechanically inclined but this does help me understand what the mechanic is talking about. First i have to find a reputable mechanic to do the work- thanks again!
These videos are great, are in depth. In the future (seeing as this is a common VQ35DE problem) this vid will save me big on labor. Thank you so much! A million stars!
Great video and thanks for your time! You are a good man helping others understand the engine.
Dude your video was a big help. I had my tensioner guide screw up on an 03 Altima
All went Ok but real pain to work on cause of the tight area. I found the biggest pita
was motor mount bolt that goes through the cover. Thanks again, Cheers from Canada
Vince
You are a master technician and a fine man to share this.
2012nugget, imho, this has got to be the BEST video/explanation, and yes FIX for this issue. I sincere thanks for sharing. I am not a mechanic but I do my own car repairs etc. As a result of my experience, I dropped the entire subframe to do this repair on my Altima SER. A TON more work because when I got it opened, it was the chain slack guide that was broken in 2 different places. At $850.00 you are CLEANING UP while offering such a very sought after and needed service. Screw Nissan Service.
im about to tackle this task in my garage and you sir are an experienced one, thanks for your video. it has helped me be more confident on it but i also need to retime it though.
Banjo tight!!! Awesome video, I'm gonna be following this when I replace my guide. 2002 maxima (VQ35 out of a 06 350z). Hopefully it isn't too different.
Man, thank you. I've been trying to find a video to show my fiance so he can figure out how to fix his own car instead of having his future wife fix all of our cars! THANK YOU!
Hey Nugget thanx for the post!! YOur video really helped me diagnose a customers car, without tearing into it to find the problem. Mucho Appreciado Amigo! i owe you a beer kind sir.
I'm really impressed with all the effort you put in here for documenting this. I have the same problem in my car, but I'm not really sure if I can do this all by myself or not. Anyways, you're the best man.
Thanks !
awesome guide, really really helpful! I still may go to the dealer to get this done as I don't trust any friends around here to tackle this with me.
Thank you for an incredible video! I was able to follow your instructions to replace the left timing chain guide and tensioner. I've put everything back together but she won't start for some reason. I'm hoping you read your comments and might be able to help me a bit. The motor turns over and sounds like it about to start, but never quite gets there.
+Brent Whipple Check the electrical plugs. There are two at the top/firewall/timing cover that will plug in either way, make sure they are not crossed.
Ok. I'm working on a 2005 Altima 3.5. I believe I see the plugs you're referencing: I didn't unplug those.
Is there any chance that replacing the tensioner could have caused a cam to jump just a bit off where it won't start now?
I was gonna do it myself. Thank you for the instructions, they are very helpful for those who wanna know what they're about to get into and also those, like myself who prefer to pay $600 plus parts. I think I might be able to do it but I just don't wanna mess something up lol
Thanks.
Hi, I have to compliment your video again. I have watched countless instructional videos and this one (both parts) are done very efficiently and you video the important parts and cut out the actual work. Thank you for saving me time and for the knowledge friend.
+Chris Bushnell Thanks Chris, guys like you are why I do it!
Hey im at the point where im 99 percent sure im ready to remove the cover and its resisting when i try to get it started. There must be some bolts i can't see. Are there any under the black access plates?
It should be quite stuck. If it can be slightly pulled out at the top, the width of a pencil lead and you feel resistance try to use that to determine where it is being held and inspect that area. Review the video again to make sure something wasn't missed. Careful not too much pressure! Go slow, you will find it!
Got it thanks. What a f-ing pain in the ass. This is way more work then I thought it was going to be. If I ever have to do a similar job again I am pulling the damn engine out of the car to do it.
Very informative video. I used a serpentine belt remolval tool that is skinny and long like a slim jim with 3/8" head on it. Best tool to use for this small of space. And to whoever needs to hear it, watch video on water pump removal and change seals or whole water pump wile your in there. Just one less thing to not have to worry about later.
Great patients. Awesome video. Great mechanic.
Great videos. I can see at least a couple things that might trip up someone who's never done this job on one of these Nissans: Power steering bolts seem like a common source of frustration. Also, crank pulley bolt removal is never fun. This job might give me an excuse to upgrade my tools, though. I'm eyeing a set of Williams USA or used Snap-On tools :-)
Thanks for the video. Great details! Hearing some chain noise on my 350z. Looks like its going to be easier then I thought!
Great Video!! I am going to need to do this sooooooon!!!!!! Like in a few weeks. I have 204,000 miles on my 2003 Altima 3.5. Been making the ticking noise since 100k. Was very intimidated about doing myself. Your step by step video should help big time. Gonna get a friend to help. Being that the parts are only $45 for tensioner and $25 for the guide I can afford to pay him $100 to help!! Will post results when im done.
Awesome video, this helped me out greatly.
The dealer has the best I have found, very smooth and easy to work with. Cost arround 6-8 dollars.
Where the hell was the internet way back when Jesus Christ was alive to learning the tool tricks you are showing these guys now. Back in the day you had to know a good mechanic to learn those tricks. That mean a young mechanic had to bust a few knuckles first before he was respected enough to get those tricks. These days the young guys got it made. If they pay attention that is. Good video nugget. I got this head gasket at $2000 thinking it would be pretty easy, then realized it was a chain without the book. I get the feeling retirement savings on this one won't be here. Keep up the good work.
Great work, u make this look easy Ive done a few at my shop and doing a Quest now, but that's cool giving people insight on how to
Thanks for posting, very helpful. I followed my nose most of the way but got stuck at those internal bolts. Skimming your vids was quicker than dragging out the manual :)
I got it with my 14mm gearwrench... Really easy. My exhaust is different than that of a maxima and I cant come in from the middle of the car. I have to squeeze my car in front of the A arm and right above the axle... painful but i got it, thanks a lot for the video it really helped me! Perfect now!
At that millage I would give it a pump as well. Check the chain for stretching by looking at the gears and chain for excessive wear at the links and inspect the tension after pulling it tight with the new guide. Some need a chain some dont, depends mostly on the ammount of oil changes, hard driving conditions etc. Be sure to mark the possitions of every gear and shaft before disturbing the actual chain to be sure to install it correctly. The cams will want to move on you when you do this but np.
Thank you for posting this video! you jsut save me for braking my timing cover.
Great video good tips very helpful please make more thanks
I will take a look to see how the cam chain tensioner can be removed and replace without removing the main chain. Thanks for your help and advice
wanted to let you know that your video helped me tremendously! I watched both parts multiple times before I started on my wife's 2006 maxima. the only problem I encountered was upon removal of the timing chain cover I discovered that the front secondary chain tensioner was shot as well. Thanks again for posting this video!
Just what I needed and to the point. Great vid series
Yes it can be slipped out, just be careful not to allow the chain to jump. Its a good idea to mark the chain and the gear just in case this happens so you will be able to reinstall it correctly. All gears and a corresponding link.
Excellent.......best auto video on the internet....
I'm actually amazed that I found these videos of you fixing the timing chain issue with the Nissan Maxima. & I'm even more amazed that your in charlotte because I'm in hickory. I have a 2004 Altima 3.5. The dealer wanted $2200 to fix this problem. The car has 122,000 miles and I have the timing tick. Sometimes it will quit making the noise if I turn the car off and right back on. Could you add me as a contact on here so I could message you my full story? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
Thank You for a VERY HELPFUL and informative video.. You sir,,, are very pleasant to listen too.... ... Thank You Again..... All the Best
Def should have watched this video before I had to replace the timing cover. Lol. Thanks for the recent advice. I should finally be done with my sister's tomorrow. Great info btw.
As stated in the video it is the chain guide that fails, the tensioner can be put back together and reused however I reccomend replacing it and the tensioner guide. The others that you mention have me confused as there is only the one main tensioner but several guides are in the location you mentioned. The tensioner and guide are located in the middle left hand side as you face the front of the motor.
So glad it worked for you ! That bolt is a bugger.
Nice one. Very easy to follow.
Hello nugget, after doing this what I feared the most was now my car just spins as if it was just free spinning ..the crank is moving but it doesn't even sound right ...thanks for your time
Great video thanks for the commentary.
I watched both your videos and what a great job you have done. My wife's 06 Maxima has been nothing but a money pit and now it's come to the timing chain guide with less than 100k miles. Wasn't there a TSB on this? Crappy supplier and material used? I think Nissan should pay for this. I know if it were another Auto manufacture they would have. My dealer says this isn't common but google says different, there have been lawsuits on this issue and on much later model Nissans.
+Steve6003D There is a law suit in action for nissan about these faulty cheap parts in NJ right now but it only covers a few states .You can look it up on google to check it out.
I might have to do this on my mom's 2002 Altima 3.5SE. She said she's hearing a whining noise - smh. We JUST completed about $6-7K worth of work (did most myself and saved about $4K), some of which are admittedly standard repairs for a car with 160K miles. These Nissans are not your typical Japanese cars that seemingly run forever. My list of work completed: Rear wheel bearings, valve covers and gaskets, spark plugs, inner and outer tie rod ends, all three cat converters, all four O2 sensors, front struts, transmission speed sensor, fuel pump, right engine mount, and oil cooler gasket. I'm tired of being under the hood of that car. On the bright side, there's not much else that can fail.
Nice video , very informative.... Thanks for sharing
I like your explanation of the whole proceeder good information. There's been some interest in a class action law suit against nissan on this problem. I've been contacted by a lawyer.
Great video should save me some time. Is there a timing cover gasket? Do I just use blue RTV? also do you have to replace the tensioner itself or just the guide?
Thanks a lot for the info. U give great pointers man thx again
Thanks for making this great video 2012nugget! I have watched several vids and have a question or two to ask...Did you just put everything back together and start the car up? I saw where someone said you have to set the timing to top dead center. Do I have to do that if I change the Tentioner and guide like you did? How difficult was it to put the cover back on? Did you put silicone on the engine side or the cover or both? Its funny all the 3.5 DIY timing videos and no one showed how to apply the silicone. :) Where did you support the engine once the motor mount was removed? Thanks!
thanx so much man...helped me out alot!
I'm gonna just get a new motor ..thanks for all your help ...
you are the man Bless you for making a great video for us!
excellent video you don't mention if the engine needs to be supported while the motor mount is out though.
I thought for sure that was it, what a bummer. Going back in for another look.
Hello, I am stuck at trying to remove the 14mm nut behind the power steering. I found the nut, but it will not budge at all. ive tried a socket wrench, box wrench, but there isn't enough space. Any reccomendations? thanks
This video will be very helpful and save me alot of money when I do it myself next week. The question I have is that my 2004 nissan maxima has 183,000 miles on it. I have the same noise that your car was making. I wanted to know since my car has alot of miles on it, should I replace everything inside the timing cover: chains, guides, tensioners, and water pump or should I just replace the parts you indicated in the video
This video helps a lot, I was afraid I'd have to remove the engine on my maxima... I want to do this job soon, but there's one thing stopping me: I was told my bank 1 VVT Sprocket is advanced. I'm not sure if that means I need to replace it or not. If I do replace it, can it be replaced with the engine still in?
Great info. About to do this job on 05 maxima.
hey, very nice video. i gotta do that job on my maxima 2004, 3.5 and i was wondering if i should change the chain and the gear because the timing chain kit i found on the internet seems to include them. Ive never done that before and im pretty sure playing with the gear seems to be a bit more risky and challeging. also i cant find any gasket, should i use some sort of high temperature gasket maker?
You make this job looks to easy 👍
So i need to replace all the gides or just the one the adjuster pull
great vid, very informative thx for your time
@TuroFM None as of yet, the chains go for quite a while without any wear as long as the oil changes are done on time. The easiest way to replace the chain would be to use white out on the cam gears and crank to mark a tooth. Count the links between marks, mark your new chain and install. Alot of times if you move it to top dead center, number one plug on compression stroke you will see marks on the block and heads. Count the links is the easy way for you,no mistakes. .Peace
Great video! Extremely helpful! Quick question. How long did it take roughly to complete this?
The cams are moving though correct ? Either timed incorrectly or bent valves, I would hope for the best and check the timing alignment again.
Hi there i have 250gt 2006 and the belts gone off. I cant see if its broken or come off will be easier to replace it or take it to the mechanics?
Hey @2012nugget, I'm doing this job right now. Quick question - where do you jack up the engine before removing the mount? I've always done it on the oil pan with a block of wood in between, but with removing the oil pan, I'm not sure what to do. Lol.
Thanks so much for this video, your video was the only video I could find for this job. Well done!!. Just one question, did you remove the power steering pump?
not remove but move over.
I saw the 2 connectors, one is green and one is blue, they look the same in size and shape, however, I didn't disconnect them. I did just check to make sure they were securely connected, and tried again. I did not re-attach that bolt/bracket in that area because it was so difficult to reach. Also, I touched the Starter Relay and it does click when I try to start the engine, so I think that gets ruled out. I also looked at any fuses that had a reference to IGN, or ENG, they all look good.
@2012nugget Thanks man I really been searching, because I was under the impression the valve fix for transmission was for all 04-06s guess not, good info man!
thanks for the reply, the video is a big help really!
I have a question about the upper oil pan. There is no mention in the video about removing it, but the Nissan shop manual does say to remove it. I can see why, because of the seal between the timing chain cover and the upper oil pan. Getting apart was no problem, but I can see it will be a little tricky putting back together. I'd like to get by without removing it. Is there any advice to insure that I get a good seal with the RTV at the bottom of the timing chain cover. I plan to do a dry run to see how this can be done.
great video
hey 2012nugget. when there is a rattle for only a few short seconds upon a cold start would that require new chains or just tensioner and chain guide?
Did you remove both the power steering pump and alternator out of the way, so to get those bolts that hold both out of the timing chain cover ?
I working on this job on my 2004 Quest SE with the 5 speed transmission. The lower bolt on the motor mount bracket does not have enough clearance to be removed. Any suggestions other than lowering the subframe a couple of inches so it will clear? You stated that the cover won't clear that stud, I'm assuming this is a certainty. Not good news.
I have a 2002 Altima. the motor spins over as if you pulled out the spark plugs. Seems like there is no compression. Two people said the timing belt broke but I read it has a timing chain. It is a 4 cyl. Three codes came up on a scanner which are: 1121,1122 and 0113. Any advice
thanks!! great job on your videos!!
Im having this issue with my engine as well. Do you only work on your car?. I would seriously pay you to do this. GREAT video. Thanks for taking the time out to share.
Dude, you're a boss. Thanks.
gotta love the guud stuff....zooms into the snap on wrench lmao! nice video
I need this to my car it makes the same noise were did you get timing chain ? you have to change the water pump too ?
I'm in the process of removing the cover and stuck on the motor mount part. The bottom bolt is too long to get out, do you raise or lower the engine to get it out?
Stuck 7 different ways from Sunday lmao....great video man thanks
Good information, glad you posted video. Just pulled the front cover from my 2005 Maxima with 98,000 miles and as I suspected, the slack guide has the broken tip and it has slid down! This is such a common problem that Nissan needs to remedy it somehow!! Did you have trouble getting that stud out of the middle of the block? That thing is about 1/2 inch too long and was a bear to get out. Also, the cover was a challenge to pull up and out of there! Any tips to make it easier to put back?
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it. Quick question. I am looking at parts online for an 04 Maxima 3.5L, before tearing everything apart and noticed there is an "upper right timing chain tensioner", "upper left timing chain tensioner", and "lower engine timing chain tensioner" and there are various timing chain guides also. Which one typically fails? I want to order what I need before tearing everything apart. Thanks!
my 91' 1.6 timing chain wore and it jumped time. I got a new tentioner but what marks should I look for to line everything up
That would depend on how far off it was when the motor was turned over. Did you turn it by hand before attempting to crank it ? The starter motor has enough power to bend them, by hand you would feel the bind.
Im going to try to do this job this weekend. everyone told me i should replace the water and oil pump. the water pump looks easy nough but i dont see a video on the oil pump. can you give me some insight on that?
Nugget, I think you're talking about the double black wire in 3:35 that is grounded to the bracket on the upper right side of the front panel. I didn't remove that one, I left it right on the bracket. However, there is a thin black wire that goes down from the harness after the bracket clip on, that goes under the alternator, then looks like behind the lowest pulley. I cleaned the leads on the battery, and checked the IGN SW right next to the battery and it looks ok looking from the top.
