Gates are still holding strong with updates to come. If you want to see the other videos showing my fence project the links are listed in the description.
I've been researching how to build gates. I've seen a lot of DIY professionals here on YT and I have to say you have a top notch approach to building the gate, and the instruction is stellar. Thank you for taking the time to create this video to share.
Great design, although i did the same design with screws thinking it would be stronger than nails , what i found out over time is that the movement or flex of the fence and gate through wind or opening and closing of the gate loosened the screws. Nails flex and screws don't. I built a fence with all screws thinking i was the best, although over time i had to keep screwing the screws in and over time they did not screw in as they were stripped out. My neighbor that built a fence the same time used nails, and his maintenance is nothing compared to mine. awesome
@ 10:11 I smile and laugh out loud because that looks so good👍 Last weekend I rebuilt my fence. I'm super nervus about building the gate. because I've heard horror stories about it. I've even contemplated hiring someone to build it for me. Mine would be a double gate like yours; but smaller. You make it look easy; this is why I have joy about this video. ...Pray for me that I can do this.😊
Looks good. From experience with a drop rod in the ground - please allow me to suggest a change. I would pour a concrete slab about 18-24" around the PVC receiver pipes. Also, I would put 12" PVC pieces of pipe in the ground. Deeper pipe gives room for dirt to collect between clean outs - less frequent clean outs. The slab minimizes dirt washing in the PVC pipes and also locks them in against shifting in high winds.
That's a great idea and you are correct. For me I believe this is temporary, I am planning on a very large concrete slab in the area leading up to something.... For now I thought about drilling 2 holes in the pavor.
Yes! This is why I am here I have watched dozens of videos of people building fences, but most are just watching someone build, without learning HOW to build it
9:20...frikin' genius! I did mine 25 years ago without the help of my dad and it's lasted so far. But that stacked wood to prop up the attached double gate idea would have made my life a whole lot easier.
Great work! I’ve built hundreds of gates this way for customers. The only difference is I use 5” Structural screws and Mending plats to join the framing together. Never tried lap joint! Its a nice touch!
I liked the design of the gate, I really liked the joining of the two gates to install as one piece. Oh and the string line for leveling was brilliant. You made it look easier with your video. Thanks 😊
Par excellence! I often get wrangled into building fences and have not liked my gate design. I started adding diagonals to my last ones. Your lap joint design is even better. Thank you!
Thank you for such a thorough video. I have this exact scenario (a shadow box fence with a large double gate) and was looking for ideas on how to make the gates. This was so well done and I appreciated your attention to showing how you did the lap joints and the cross brace. Thanks also for the tip at the end about the doing a lap joint on the cross brace - I will incorporate that. Your idea to use those wheels was phenomenal - such a great solution to help reduce sag. Much appreciated! I'm in process of building mine now and am confident I'll have a sturdy, well built fence and gates. Thank you!
I'm going to use your video to replace two sagging 10ft aluminum gates. The gates were even repaired poorly by a welder. That didn't last. The tricky part will be the PVC posts. I either dig two new holes and put in 4x4 posts or attach wood to the PVC posts. Posts are filled with concrete. Thank you. And that awesome, your dad was a great helper and you could spend time together.
Thanks for the video. I usually build my gates in place on the fence as a normal fence panel except the ends have hinges. Then just cut it in half. No need to lay it out on the ground.
Thank you so much! My friend and I followed your video and it was so so helpful... couldn't have done her smaller (but still 4' each double-gate opening) as well without it. Really appreciate all the details!
As soon as You said ' perfectly' when putting those drop bolts into loose driven pvc pipe I knew. Anyone with a thought would also ' KNOW'. NICE GATE THOUGH 🦘✌️
Great job and love how you did the easy fix for alignment, and very cool idea with dads help, it's always good when family works together on a project, thanks for taking the time for video editing
I’ve been using lap joints for years glad to see you figure it out the chopsaw works much better but you should have used at least 6x6 on your gate posts
Lap joints and the chop saw are the way to go! I debated the 6x6. So far the 2 4x4s pretty close are doing the trick but we will see what happens with time
Thank you for sharing the idea about the sag double gate .I have the problem like that my property have one side higher than other side. Y'all video is helping me alot .
Love the construction and how you put the double gate together as one unit great thinking! You certainly know how to make a beefy double gate system,..great job!
Really great video. Kudos to a job well done, I plan to use your double gate model for an 8 foot gap to allow bigger machinery to my backyard. Learned a lot from this one, thanks for sharing.
Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you for your time and excellent service to this community. I have watched so many other landscaping videos and other diy videos with similar projects. Yours my friend are so common sense based and time saving too. New subscriber I am! Thank you buddy!
Thank you so much. I have a 60" gate, single swing, that I need to install. Your 13' gate is an inspiration for me. Thank you again! You got a new sub.
Nice work. I just build my gates with stringers temp screwed in, measure and cut in all my braces then hang hinges and guy gate in the middle, trim and install the latch.
Man, you really are quite the engineer. I mean I wouldn't have thought to do half the things you did in this project. And I absolutely love that you gave a one month update right in the video, really quality stuff. Excited to see how you stain the fence, I'm sure you came up with some genius idea for that too.
Exceptionally well done.... better than a lot of the professional work I've seen lately. I'm currently working on rebuilding the fencing around my property. Your video has inspired me to go that extra mile in getting the job done right. My downside is that I do not possess a miter saw which is definitely necessary to complete those joints the way that you did them. I wonder if I can rent one.
I am a retired professional land surveyor and have to admit that you plannned and executed your gate construction extremely well. I am going to be erecting a 4 foot stockade fence and will be building a smalller version of a large gate for my daughter. after watching your video, I may either try a single 8 foot gate or a 4 foot version of your doudle gate. I have one question about your construction, did you ever consider installing an H frame for the bearing posts on each side of the gate to offset the weight load?
Hell yeah brother! I clicked so fast on this new upload lol. Keep up the good work man, I’ve been hooked on your channel since I found it a couple weeks ago! Can’t wait for the next upload, you’re talented.
Great video. Did the same with our fence to access the greenbelt so I can mow behind the fence line but an 8 foot run instead. Cane bolts with some 6" 3/4 steel pipe too.
You did a very sweet job, with your fence. I was thinking my god at the price of lumber today, it must have been crazy expensive, to build a full fence with todays price of lumber?
Great work. This is the 3rd gate video of yours I watched. My only question is, with all that planning and great execution on construction, why not tape that gate latch shown at 15:19 when you stained the fence?? Overspray all over the front while the back part is still black!
Good looking gates. I was wincing watching you cut the lap joints though. Its almost always a bad idea to use both the fence and the miter at the same time. I always clamp a block to the fence well back from the blade to set the spacing of the cut to prevent a kick back situation.
Fence that large needs a steel frame with steel posts. The wood over time will warp and drop. And wheels will cause problem on the dirt, even if parked on concrete. Know this from experience with just a 12 foot opening. Wood gates were great a year or two, then worthless. Did a steel gate, steel posts and eight years later, only some replacement of pickets due to splitting over time.
Love the gate idea with building as a complete unit laid out on the driveway. How did you determine what the “angle” was to transfer the layout to the flat driveway? Was it a combination of using the level and that large yellow protractor to determine angle of the string line, or did you use a different method?
Nice video, dude! Very informative. Been trying to plan how to fix my fence gates, and I think this really helped. I do have a question for you: Where did you get the spring-loaded wheels for the gate? That added feature is going to be a must for me. Thanks!
How deep & wide did you dig your posts to support such a large gate? I have heard that gate posts need to be cemented in deeper and wider than normal fence posts. Awesome video and very helpful. We are also building our own.
Thanks a lot! Your catch on the latch saved me a ton. I couldn't find anything to help me with that until I saw your video. 👏👏👏👏 Btw, I bought both 2 x 4 inch and another 8 inch pneumatic casters, but after this video I was thinking of sticking with the 4 inch ones. Our gates are like the same. Is it still holding firmly with no sagging?
Thank you for this. I think I have watched this video 60 times already in preparation for my own project. I finally ordered the materials today only to realize that I don’t know if a 4x4 post (in cement) (existing) is sufficient to support such a wide gate? Are yours 4x4 posts? Also, do you think they would support a 90” single gate (I have an obstacle in the other gate that allows maximum 4’ gate on that side). Huge thanks for any help you can provide!!
So I'm all about the numbers and none about the work and this made me think I can do this... I have a very simple question the gate hinges, wheels and other hardware do you have a shared list of that also? Either way thanks!
Gates are still holding strong with updates to come. If you want to see the other videos showing my fence project the links are listed in the description.
link to the hinges?
Where did you buy the hardware? Hinges, wheels etc.
Where did you buy the hardware?
I’m curious about the hinges? I have searched for longer lag bolts with hinge without any luck.
@ThatTechTeacher427 How’s the 13’ gate doing? Sagging issues? I’m going to build mine based off of your video this weekend. Thanks

Thanks I appreciate it!

Thanks 👍. Dad's come in handy 😊. Good to hear yours has worked for so long.
Great work! I’ve built hundreds of gates this way for customers. The only difference is I use 5” Structural screws and Mending plats to join the framing together. Never tried lap joint! Its a nice touch!
Thanks! I like the mending plate idea. The lap joints take a bit longer but I think add a lot of strength.
I liked the design of the gate, I really liked the joining of the two gates to install as one piece. Oh and the string line for leveling was brilliant. You made it look easier with your video. Thanks 😊
Agreed
Par excellence! I often get wrangled into building fences and have not liked my gate design. I started adding diagonals to my last ones. Your lap joint design is even better. Thank you!
This is EXACTLY what I needed for my double gate to address the sag on the double gate. Great & sound info!
Thanks!
I put up fence for a living and I have to say you did a Danm good job.

Hammer feed system on your miter was awesome.
I gotta hand it to you, that is a gate. you sure are one of the RUclipsrs of all time!
Thanks Iol
@@ThatTechTeacher427 to lj out lil

Thanks for the tutorial - using this method to build a 5'x6' gate now. About to go try out this Kreg jig!
Thanks for the video. I usually build my gates in place on the fence as a normal fence panel except the ends have hinges. Then just cut it in half. No need to lay it out on the ground.
Good job mate . I'm about to make a gate for the mother in law and this video has given me a good few tips . Thanks alot bro
love the attention to detail in these videos
I appreciate that!
Thank you so much! My friend and I followed your video and it was so so helpful... couldn't have done her smaller (but still 4' each double-gate opening) as well without it. Really appreciate all the details!
You could easily be a fence contractor and a famn good one. Best gate video I've seen yet 😊
Next time you post a video of a big gate, would be good to shop the big gate opening and closing. Thanks!
I’ve been using lap joints for years glad to see you figure it out the chopsaw works much better but you should have used at least 6x6 on your gate posts
Lap joints and the chop saw are the way to go! I debated the 6x6. So far the 2 4x4s pretty close are doing the trick but we will see what happens with time
We use a 4x6 for the hinge post if a 6x6 is not requested.
Thank you for sharing the idea about the sag double gate .I have the problem like that my property have one side higher than other side. Y'all video is helping me alot .
Damn it's great watching and learning from smart people! Thanks for video and sharing knowledge/ideas.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
Great design, having a truck gate is critical and that build seems plenty strong.
Great vid. I have to build an 8' single gate at the end of a porch. Your video gave me great ideas, thanks.
Glad to hear it!
Love the construction and how you put the double gate together as one unit great thinking! You certainly know how to make a beefy double gate system,..great job!
This means a lot considering the the name of your channel! Thanks!
Really great video. Kudos to a job well done, I plan to use your double gate model for an 8 foot gap to allow bigger machinery to my backyard. Learned a lot from this one, thanks for sharing.

I remember your last stuff ., I’m rebuilding it now 😊
Great job definitely would’ve liked to see the gates operate in your video never showed the double gates operate on its wheels, rolling open and shut
Nice work. I just build my gates with stringers temp screwed in, measure and cut in all my braces then hang hinges and guy gate in the middle, trim and install the latch.
Thanks for showing how to build a gate, mine are old and I want to replace them, great job!
Thanks!
Love your videos and your commentary
Thanks!
I would like to see more detail on how the frame of the gate was stabilized before adding the pickets.
Very nice! I was cheering all the way. You've given me some hope of doing this myself. Thanks.
Man, you really are quite the engineer. I mean I wouldn't have thought to do half the things you did in this project. And I absolutely love that you gave a one month update right in the video, really quality stuff. Excited to see how you stain the fence, I'm sure you came up with some genius idea for that too.
hahaha I appreciate it! I think I have something lol

It looks amazing. Great job
You did one Hell of a job!
Some entertaining choices were made.
Again, that was awesome. Now you need to come to Tallahassee to help me with mine. Its a smaller project.
Do you have more details on the measurements /gap? For example if it was exactly 13 ft wide did you cut the 2x4 6 ft 5.5 inch?
Awesome video. Have a similar project I need to do and this is exactly what I was looking for.
Hell yeah brother!
I clicked so fast on this new upload lol. Keep up the good work man, I’ve been hooked on your channel since I found it a couple weeks ago! Can’t wait for the next upload, you’re talented.
Thanks! I really appreciate, I'll see what I can do lol
Magnificent job Sir. Thanks for the video.👍
Thanks!
Thanks. I’m making some gates soon. Very useful video
Pt. 2 another great video.
Great video. Did the same with our fence to access the greenbelt so I can mow behind the fence line but an 8 foot run instead. Cane bolts with some 6" 3/4 steel pipe too.
That will do the job!
You did a very sweet job, with your fence. I was thinking my god at the price of lumber today, it must have been crazy expensive, to build a full fence with todays price of lumber?
Is that a Freedom Factory shirt? Hell yeah brother!
Hell ya!
It turned out great
Great work. Smart n sharp looking
Thanks so much for your insight I'm taking these ideas out to Portland Oregon for my daughter's property.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Great work. This is the 3rd gate video of yours I watched. My only question is, with all that planning and great execution on construction, why not tape that gate latch shown at 15:19 when you stained the fence?? Overspray all over the front while the back part is still black!
Beautiful work
Dude, you are awesome. Great and helpful video. My new fence appreciates it. You got yourself a new subscriber

You are correct that was a dumb move on my part. I wasn't thinking
Really nice job! I have to build something close to 16 feet, so I'm looking...
@14:23 What kind of latch did you use? I can only find that style for a post mount and the screw holes do not align with the 2x4 frame.
This is a great how-to video. Thanks
Thanks bro! I hope my gate looks as good as yours when I'm done
Exactly what I needed, thank you!

How are we holding up 2 years later? Looks good! Thanks !
Nice build. I would suggest the extra money for 6×6 gate posts on this size gate.
best one yet

Looks great! How do you open the double gate with the spokes in the pvc tubes, from the outside?
That's a great looking fence I really like your thoughts on your gates
Loved the video. Can you tell me the rough cost of that double gate? She is perfect. Your video was awesome
Great video! A lot of great ideas and explained very well! This deserves a comment from me (i am usually to lazy to leave one 😅)
Thank you very much ❤❤❤
I did learn a lot from you

Freedom Factory Tee! :D Hell yeah brother
Let em eat and do it for Cleet!
Love it! Would it be a good idea to lap in the horizontal brace as well?
great to see the Freedom Factory T-Shirts making an appearance!
Yeee ye! Hell yeah brother ole cleeter mcskeeter would be proud lol
Gotta Love Cleeter!
nice, great work
Thanks I definitely needed this
How did you determine/draw on the driveway with angles and everything? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Could you put a link for the wheels on the gate please. Thanks and gate is looking good
Thank you for this. I think I have watched this video 60 times already in preparation for my own project. Huge thanks for any help you can provide!!
Could you add an automatic gate opener to this type of gate? Does it have the right hinges as you have shown in your video? Thanks!
1 year later is your fence holding up. I was quoted some like 2400 for a smaller gate and was told a wood gate wouldn't last a year that big!
Nice job 🇺🇸
So I'm all about the numbers and none about the work and this made me think I can do this... I have a very simple question the gate hinges, wheels and other hardware do you have a shared list of that also? Either way thanks!
Nice job, Exercise explanation^^
That is truly an awesome job. Thank you for taking this time to make this video.
