Congrats on your new purchase. I bought an XEGS last year from FB marketplace. It came with all the original parts minus the matching controller. The controller I found & bought on eBay a few months ago. I also purchased a Backbit as a flash cartridge. Since the 400 mini came out I don't use it anymore. Much like my still-working Heavy Sixer it is just a museum piece stored in a plastic container. I also own a CIB Atari 800 XL with a 1050 disk drive, cassette player, and Atari Artist tablet/software. But again using the 400 mini is so much easier.

I can't remember what I did with my first XEGS, but I bought a newer one off of eBay years ago. The power supply died and I got a new one from a place called the Brewing Academy. Works perfectly.

I picked up my XEGS a few years ago for $20, it was only missing the light gun but had the keyboard. Main reason I got it cheap was that the store couldn't get a good picture out of it and they figured it wasn't a good return of investment to fix it
When I got it home I did some research and found the power supplies could fail and start delivering to much voltage which could damage the system. When I tested my power supply I was lucky as it was not delivering enough voltage to power the system, so I went and bought an adapter - cut the connector off- and attached the proprietary adapter from the XEGS power supply and it worked perfectly. Haven't had an issue since.
I did find a schematic online to create a cable for the XE so you can use a Master System light gun on it and the cable works great.

I appreciate your dedication to covering all things Atari including the 8-bit. I salute your dedication and acquisition of an XEGS. Out of the entire Atari product line-up, the Atari 8-bit is where my nostalgia is strongest and where I spent the most time. I look forward to more A8-bit coverage.
By the time the XEGS was released, I had already moved on to the Atari ST line, and since I still had access to an Atari 8-bit computer, I never saw the need to get an XEGS. On top of that, I was not a fan of the pastel buttons and hardware design. The only thing cool about the hardware to me was the light gun, and I picked one up from Video61 a few years ago.
As far as games go, you can't go wrong with most Atari 8-bit games from EA (7 Cities of Gold, Archon, MULE, One on One) and Synapse (Blue Max, Necromancer, Rainbow Walker, Alley Cat, Fort Apocalypse). There were other top notch publishers. Those two in particular released a lot of my favorites.

I had an 800 XL as a kid. My dad was able to get me dozens of cracked games. I had no idea it was illegal when I was so young, but I also had to figure out every game without an instruction manual. My favorite game was Archon. I didn't know until 25 years later that the high pitched ding noises were indicating you could attack again. I always thought it wasn't working quite right.
What I'm saying is, play some Archon... and read the manual!

I didn't have an XEGS back in the day, but I did have a 130XE computer, which essentially served as my "game console" at that time. The XEGS rereleases were what allowed me to have access to games, as pretty much all computer stores in my area had stopped carrying Atari 8-bit software. Of course, having the 130XE is also why I never got a 7800, as back then I simply didn't know what the differences were between the Atari 8-bits and 7800, and my parents never saw a reason to get it when I already had the computer plus my 2600. Oh well. Regardless, I had a lot of fun with a lot of the games, especially Hardball and Ace of Aces, plus I eventually also got a slew of original 8-bit carts that we had to order directly from Atari.

A nice video and a fine personal view of the XEGS beast.. As someone, who grew up with the Atari 800XL, I think I can relate to the fondness of this particular system as well, as it was basically a re-packaged 65XE. And as many games for the Atari 8-bit line of computers were awesome, so it's just a pity that so few got released on XEGS cartridges (which had that distinctive Atari design) during its lifetime.
If I may suggest - try to get that keyboard, so that you can enjoy the full potential of this fantastic machine 🙂 Thumbs up.

130xe owner here. Seeing that you are a console guy, I will not suggest the more computery games, but here's a list. American road race, consider it like enduro 2. Decathlon, if you have a joystick you can afford to destroy. Who dares wins II is a very good commando / ikari warriors clone. Super Cobra is a very well executed Scrabble type game. I had a lot of fun with Hazard run, or pixel rocks as we used to call it. 1942 / Screaming Wings is great but really small. International Karate is excellent and has really nice backgrounds. Dropzone. Moon Patrol plays really smoothly and has wonderful parallax scrolling.
As for homebrew, the usual suspects probably would suffice. Checkout what they release every year at the ABBUG contest. Really innovative games

First thing to note is that the XEGS is not the best system for maximum compatibility with modern homebrews. It unfortunately lacks the ECI port which means that you can't use the modern cartridges that expand the hardware externally. On top of that, it only supports RF and composite video while most of the other models (except some in the XL line) support S-Video, which is quite a bit cleaner (albeit you lose NTSC color artifacting). If you really want to enjoy most of the modern releases, get a 65XE or 130XE and buy a modern cartridge such as SUBAVGCart, which will add memory expansion (up to 4MB), dual POKEY (stereo) output, Covox emulation and more, without any internal hardware mods, soldering and such.
Also, a PAL machine would be compatible with basically any software while you may be less lucky with an NTSC system.

I vividly remember the 2600 Jr along with its TV commercials back in the day. A friend up the street even had one and I found myself playing 2600 games in the 90s. I'm sure this hurt the sales of Atari's other products. Backwards compatibility is also a double edge sword that can hurt a system as software developers tend to write software for the older system knowing it will work on both old and new platforms.
Anyway... I know next to nothing about the XEGS, but it looks interesting. I'll keep an eye out for any new videos you make about it.

The problem with the system is that Atari was trying to market it as competition to the NES, after the 7800 flopped. As you pointed out, almost the entire library is just rehashed Atari 8-bit games. No amount of repackaging was gonna change the fact that this was the same computer architecture Atari had been selling since the 1970s. It was going up against bleeding edge tech of the 1980s.

In my opinion the XEGS is what the 5200 should have been. But I agree with you in that it was released a little to late, which hurt the 7800. Be aware that if you want to play unofficial conversions like Prince of Persia, you will need a 130XE computer, of have you XEGS, or any other Atari 8-bit computer, upgraded to 1 MB of RAM. One of the most detrimental things about the XEGS is the same issue that most micro computers at the time (especially those sold as a console competitor) suffered; the usage of a one button only joystick. Regardless of graphics or sound, the system would feel instantly outdated in comparison since at least 2 buttons were common place in the console world since the Intellivision.
Combine that with Atari's decision to try and compete with itself in the same market pretty much guaranteed the failure of the XEGS.
