    One thing that I actually thought was funny was in the Italian campaign. It wasn't something the game did directly, but rather implied. Since the guy's retelling it to his daughter, if you died during one of the missions (I didn't), does that mean he would have to correct himself to her?
    "...and then I got blown up. No wait, that's not right. Let me try that again..."

    • @slvrcobra1337

      Suteivun That would've actually been a pretty cool detail, considering he's an old guy whose memory was likely failing. Maybe not EVERY death, but every so often he remarks on the death and corrects himself.
      "Then I took a grenade from nowhe- Oh wait, no that was Patricio..."

      Pretty much what Prince of Persia: Sands of Time did. Everytime you died the Prince (who was telling the game as a story) would go "wait, no, that doesn't seem right" (or something along those lines) when you died.

      Mafia 3 did a very similar thing during certain missions where a death would be followed with a video of a narrator going "no that's not right" while reading off a document. Cool the first few times but gets to be old quickly.

    In fairness, "What the fuck happened to the backup" is not an atypical result in a World War 1 offensive push.

    • @TrabberShir
      @TrabberShir 7 лет назад +63

      It was really uncommon on the squad or platoon level. Sure on the battalion and larger level it was a running theme of the war that logistics broke down reliably. But since the smallest actions of the war (at least on the British, French, Italian, Russian and Austrian sides of things) were at the battalion level, it was really unlikely to not have all the backup you could identify at a glance.

This time instead of a thin paint coat of cops and robbers, however, it's a thin paint coat of WWI. It's so horribly thin, in fact, that for a moment I thought I was playing Battlefield 3 with slightly prettier graphics.

      Well, Verdun with the bf1 servers and netcode... teleporting enemies is never a good sign in a game set in ww1. Also, all of the weapons in the game were in use in 1918. WW2 was basically fought with end of ww1 weapons and that is something that a large amount of people forgets. Operations are surprisingly close though. One team has limited resources to attack, the other team is on defense. If it was a mode that went back and forth like that, then you would essentially have Verdun.

      I spend like 80% of the time running around in my trench thinking about how on earth I can show my head and not get shot, while 10% of the time I execute that plan and horribly die and the other 10% is when the enemy is charging the trench and I fail to aim correctly.

      Akabeche This is why Verdun is the superior First World War 1 game. Even though it's limited to the western front, it shows all the sides that actually fought there; its gameplay actually reinforces the kind of tactics used in the war (for better or for worse); it's one shot, one kill, so teamwork and tactics > run and gun; and it does feature Russian and US units as some of the squad load outs IIRC.

      Turkish campaign? Idk, they probably avoided it because it would very likely raise discussions about the Armenian Genocide which Turkey somehow still denies and get the game banned there if it gets mentioned in game
      As for the German Campaign, they sort of did remedy it **TWO YEARS LATER** in a game that managed to be even more controversial than BF1 somehow, maybe splitting the team to handle Battlefront and Battlefield simultaneously wasn't a good idea
      So really, they could've at least done the German and Austro Hungarian side justice and no one (if few) would bat an eye

      Not to mention they put the whole fucking setting into 1918 so they could introduce assault rifles as standart weapons, even though they were literally rolled out at end of 1917 and used in extremely limited role. I mean there is a fuckton of potential in WW1 storytelling, imagine faces of soldiers who were manning trenches for months and saw first fucking tank speeding at some 10 kmh at them, with their rifles fucking useless ramming through their trenches.
      And fucking rockets on WW1 airplanes? There have been some designs that used basically what we use today for new years eve celebrations, absolutely useless against anything but zepelling clothing that separated flamable gas inside from air (ie 0 use against ground targets) and few planes used it, but it was anything but common. They just took fringes of the war technology in last year of war and made it look like that was standart so they wouldnt deviate from WW2 FPS too much. The whole moral story of WW1 about pointlessness of war, destruction of human psyche for whims of kings and emperors who played their game for exploitation of colonies, where people who grew up village from each other were murdering themselves for no reason whatsoever has been fully lost.
      You want something that can relate to tragedy of WW1? Try Valiant Hearts.

    What if every campaign had an unreliable narrator, and the American was the only honest enough liar to admit to his ruse? It would explain all the automatic weaponry and Kraut mowing and over simplified morality and would make for an interesting meta-message about unreliable narrators as a whole whereby one is forced to ask the question whether it is better to have a speaker who knowingly lies and wears it on his sleeve because it makes for a more enthralling tale, one who knowingly lies but hides it to preserve the honor of those who died, or one who unknowingly lies because their perception is so skewed by the horrors they've witnessed that they can no longer separate reality from nightmare.
    Then again that would require effort and fucks to give, and Battlefield 1 had neither.

    I found it very jarring that this game uses the Gallipoli campaign as an action set-piece. Gallipoli was a horrific nightmare even within the context of the first world war. Hundreds of thousands of thinking, feeling human beings (largely young men conscripted from Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia facing off against young men conscripted from the Levant) got violently killed and maimed in an offensive that ultimately ended up being for nothing. Using that as the backdrop of an action-packed first-person shooter does a disservice to the sheer scale of the human misery Gallipoli generated. I get that the plot of that section is meant to illustrate how terrible war is, but that's severely undercut when the cinematics end and you go straight back to mowing down those dastardly Ottomans _en_ _masse_ like a badass action hero. It irritates me that the devs even bothered with the anti-war pretension. It would be less offensive if they just made the game a dumb, straight-forward action shooter, but the veneer of being socially conscious makes the whole thing feel crass and manipulative. It's a big entertainment corporation taking real human suffering and making a farce out of it. It's all so they can sell copies of this awful game to an ignorant majority audience that just wants stuff to explode on-screen.

    Basically my _only_ requirement for buying this game was that it wouldn't have the usual "heroic Anglo-Saxons" Call of Duty campaign. I figured that if a studio was going to take a risk on the setting, they'd want to make the most use of it and show some new perspectives. That's me taught a lesson.
    Seriously though, how the fuck do you make a WWI game that has an _American_ campaign but not a French, German or Russian one? Are US audiences really so ungrateful and xenophobic that they won't pick up any game that doesn't stroke their national ego, no matter how tangential they were to the conflict in question?

      I find it pathetic you're grading a Battlefield game off of the historical accuracy of it's campaign. Sure, the United States of America didn't play a HUGE role on the front lines of WW1 in comparison to Russia or France, but is this really worth going off on the typical "oh America is the worst country in the world" speech? As long as you people continue to blame the USA every time you stub your toe then more and more people will grow to hate you. I'm sorry you didn't get to hear the same looking character models speaking french or russian in a game that obviously wasn't marketing for the minority, die-hard history buffs such as yourself. You're a bigot, and I pity you.

    In 1917 British and French armies started a massive operation against German imperial army around village of Passchedaele. The operation lasted for less than 5 months. Result was "massive" British victory. After 500 000 men, average age about 20 years old, were slaughtered in mud British army managed to capture whole fucking 5 miles of territory with the village of Passchedaele completely erased from existance by hundreds of thousands artillery shells. For 5 miles, half a million young men died in fog and mud and everlasting trenches. That was WW1. I dont expect game to capture the futile of this conflict in its entirety, but the spirit of the senseless tragedy that happened between 1914 and 1918 has been completely abandoned in favor of Call of Duty run-and-gun bullshit. Shame.

      I don't play multiplayer. I thought that since they made a pidgeon mission, at least give horses the proper respect they deserve as well. Cavalry units were indispensable during WW1. In WW2 over six million horses were used by the Wehrmacht and Soviet army alone. But I guess realism was too much to be expected from a game where you can see your enemies through walls. I'm not saying the game is bad for omitting horses, far from it. I thought it was great as a whole, but I hope DLC will adress aforementioned issues for single player campaigns.

But alas, he awakes to no glory, but only to find an angry librarian looming over him like Severus Snape on one of his bad days, wallowing in a puddle of his own spittle with a cock drawn on his face.

In maps like Fort de Voux or that one operation where you either play Italy or Germany, you can turn the tide by pretty easily by:Step 1: look at the map for where people are fighting the thickestStep 2: look at the map for where the objectives areStep 2: get from current location to objective without going anywhere near the thick fighting
    or just equip the 10 A hunter and run at them, I dunno

    Battlefield 1 undeservedly demonized WW1 Germans and didn't include FRENCH or RUSSIAN factions which is like not including USSR or the fucking nazi Germany in WW2 game but they did manage to include Americans because everyone knows Americans are the center of the universe and Americans won WW2, WW1, Franco-Prussian War, Napoleonic Wars, Seven Years War and the Thirty Years War. French people, that took second highest casualties in the war after only the Russians and that suffered four years of war on French soil? Nah, fuck them. Russians that lost 13 million men, a country and the army fighting Germans? Lel no. But American flying airplanes like it's Iwo Jima and being totally insufferable? Oh, yes, of course. Can't have the kiddies think Americans weren't totally the most important country in the war or that the Americans didn't win the war by themselves. In conclusion: fuck this game I'm never buying it or any of its DLCs.

    • @SilverPrince_
      @SilverPrince_ 7 лет назад +2

      "undeservedly demonized WW1 Germans"
      -...actually, no it didn't. Literally speaking, "antagonist" doesn't indicate inherent evil, it indicates the opposition to the protagonist. If that happens to be a German/Austro-Hungarian between you and the little objective blip, whatever. Funny enough, if you have the subtitles on during the second mission with the American volunteer pilot, you can come across some rather gentle dialogue coming from "demonized" Germans, like in my run-through, I caught a couple of them talking about the creeping threat of the Spanish Flu.
      "not including USSR"
      -...do you even history textbook? The USSR didn't exist until 1922, and, fun fact since you lack them entirely, Russia had to pull out of the war in the later year or two because they were going through a revolution at home. See "Anastasia" if you need more information.
      "include Americans because everyone knows Americans are the center of the universe and Americans won WW2, WW1, Franco-Prussian War, Napoleonic Wars, Seven Years War and the Thirty Years War"
      -First of all, the game was developed by Americans. Of course they'll get story priority. As for your "Yank Wins", America had nothing to do with the last four conflicts you mentioned, and barely helped win WW1 because they only entered the conflict in the closing days of the war. That whole sentence made me fear for your intelligence.
      "Russians that lost 13 million men, a country and the army fighting Germans?"
      -If you mean "our country revolted against the monarchy while we were out and had to go home to fix it", then yes, they lost an army and a country "fighting Germans". Seriously, did you fall off a building head-first? I'm worried.
      " But American flying airplanes like it's Iwo Jima and being totally insufferable? Oh, yes, of course. Can't have the kiddies think Americans weren't totally the most important country in the war or that the Americans didn't win the war by themselves."
      -I'll just let you see the above points again. Also remember that this is supposed to be entertainment. If you want "realism", go watch a documentary on it or read a book. Pretty boring, isn't it?
      " In conclusion: fuck this game I'm never buying it or any of its DLCs."
      -In conclusion, fuck this game, and I will not buy it or any of it's DLC.
      All the power to you. Speak with your money, if it bothers you so much. I haven't bought a copy of Call of Duty for the last three or so installments for this reason.

      You know TheOneAndOnlyKevan when he was talking about "not including USSR" meant that not including France or Russia factions in Battlefield 1, is like not including the USSR in a WW2 game. He was also being sarcastic about Americans wining WW2, WW1, Franco-Prussian War, Napoleonic Wars, Seven Years War and the Thirty Years War" to emphasis on American bias. You really needed to read his comment better.

    • @astrodreamer946
      @astrodreamer946 6 лет назад +2

      As an American, I couldn't agree more with your statement. The Americans weren't even directly in the conflict until 1917, meaning supplying ground units. We were almost entirely a support crew for all of the other allied factions. We only offically joined because of peer pressure and many Americans felt it was time to end our isolationist ways. The Germans were swindled into the war by their allies, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, and by their power hungry expansionist leaders. I would love to see more historically accurate games set in the perspective of the "bad guys" in games. Lets be honest though, there were no good or bad guys in that war, only the misguided and greedy. No faction "won" the "Great War"; Everyone suffered. It only provoked the oncoming of Ww2 and created new factions and their party leaders in every country. I just wish BF1 had tried not to be so biased. I wanted to see the grand fronts of each major campaign from both sides. I wanted to fight alongside the resistance fighters in Bulgaria and Poland. I wanted to experience the true life in the trenches first hand and to fight off the hordes of assaulting forces. They could have done so much more with this game. They could have tried to make it at least completely historically accurate, just faster paced with modern gameplay. Good game, good concept, alright story, shit/incomplete execution. *sigh*

    I can't remember the last time I was so profoundly disappointed with a game's direction. The idea of a slower pacing, cumbersome bolt action weapons being the standard armament and a tone highlighting the general inconsequentiality and amorality of the whole endeavour was fresh and interesting. And then we got something so silly and divorced from the source material that it barely qualifies as satire and comes across as outright stupid, verging on disrespectful. It's weird that if you want an action packed but genuinely sincere war game then Call of Duty 2 remains the standard.

      Well, it completely fucks up the British contributions during the campaign, showing them as being almost horrifyingly incompetent and uncaring, while in real life, the reverse is true. For starters, the British weren't drinking tea on the beach while Australians died for them. In fact, the British sent two companies of Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who they could not afford to just send anywhere and especially couldn't afford to lose in battle, as reinforcements when they heard the battle had stalled. During the whole campaign, the British 29th Division, nicknamed "The Incomparables," suffered 34'000 deaths, the highest of any single unit at Gallipoli and earned 12 Victoria Crosses.

      that being said, the US troops were no slouches either, and US marines had some of the best training in the world at the time, proving themselves in WW1 by halting an entire german advance at one point with a tiny force of marines.

    For the record, we are very close to creating a weapon system that is controlled by a game controller.
    They are called Drones. I just hope that they will still be flying drones. The terrifying drones are ground based systems (think bomb squad drones, but designed for direct combat)

    I'm not going to lie, the operations in multiplayer were true-to-life when it came to warfare. Chaos and soldiers dying left it right, I felt like I was in "Saving Private Ryan" except it was set in WW1.
    The main issue is that they gave real, experimental weapons to *everyone* when in reality they were few and far between. Also, the special classes felt like the special characters from EA's Battlefront.
    Other than that, the game was incredibly fun when it goes well, problem is with multiplayer the experience is impossible to keep consistent because it relies on the players. All I'm saying is, the game can be incredible.

    The French Army has never been shy about foreign volunteers, the Legions Etrangere (FFL) being one, and Lafayette Escadrille another. The German army took volunteers as well, these were called Freikorps or, literally free corps (in that their members serve of their own free will, regardless of nationality). The UK was a bit more cautious about it but if a yank slipped by pretending to be Canadian, they weren't going to say no, so long as HQ didn't know. Check out "The Great War" channel on YT if you're curious.

    The problem with WWII shooters isn't the WWII getting old, it's the shooters getting old. There's a lot to innovate on in WWII, even if you decide that setting the game outside Europe would kill sales.

      Punishthefalse I'm not trying to say that shooters *in general* are getting old, just that the part of WWII shooters which is "getting old" is the shooter part rather than the WWII part.

    • @Punishthefalse
      @Punishthefalse 7 лет назад

      Timothy McLean It's *military shooters* period. How many CODs do we have right now, and what proportion of them deals with WWII? We haven't had military shooters dealing with the second world war for quite some time now. In the recent years, we had been getting modern warfare stuff and three future warfare stuff, rather than WWII.

      What's the fucking point of setting the game's time period a century earlier than the present day if the game is just one Excel SUBSTITUTE command away from being a modern military shooter?

    The only gripe I have with this game is the overwhelming abundance of automatic weapons. I was hoping for more bolt action rifles, and maybe a few of semi-automatic rifles. Hell I could even see throwing in one or two automatic prototypes at the really high ranks. But no, you get access to automatic machine guns from the very beginning. There are way too many automatic weapons. Still enjoy the hell out of this game though.

      How do you include all the sides in WW1 with only 4 main theatres? Hell, they included the buffalo fighters from the states another reference to an American so sure French there, Italy, Australia and all of Great Britain. There are low numbers of maps in the BF series usually and this game changed the way it did the maps so that they focused on 2-3 battles in each of the theaters mentioned. Sure you could replace that American pilot with a Russian pilot to show respect for the Russians in ww1, but really, without adding another campaign, 2-3 more maps and another bunch of weapons, they couldn't have done it.

      abloogywoogywoo yeah, I said culturally as short hand for everything that sets them aside from the English.
      Politically support for any sort of Welsh independence, even devolved government, has been incredibly low compared to any other part of the UK. They voted more for Brexit than for their own assembly.
