      I bought 4 pc's the old version, which is absolutely great product too. When full burn is active (low settings) it boil water way faster then Trangia alchol-burner. And you don't need any gas with your journeys :)
      I've run it in conditions listed below:
      1) -24 Celcius midwinter, Finland, Espoo-Nuuksio. Burned pine cone and similar, also wood. Wet sticks etc. Works well. Heat produce quickly and burns well once you get the burn going. Heated 1 litre water from zero to boil in less than 10 minutes in freezing conditions. Only drawback was the battery from a phone. It needs to be shielded from the cold-weather or it wont go. Thermal-sleeve or similar does the job.
      2) +20 Celcius Summer, Finland, Lapland-Lemmenjoki. Burned pine cone and similar. Burned also wood, hay, etc. Heated water and made dinner way faster than a Trangia (I have always one with me. 1 litre alcohol). I added pine cone's about 5 in a 7-8 minutes. Produces immense heat when coal is produced. Tested 30 min after the fire has gone it still produces enough heat to run the USB-out.
      3) +15 Celcius, Night-conditions, Summer, Finland, Lieksa - Patvinsuo. Made in a hurry and in demonstration conditions for people gathered around of Netherlands, Germany, Finland. Alcohol consumed internally :) Tried to burn Pine Cone's there. It won't go. Either the atmosphere is different to cones to ignite or i was too drunk :) Although sticks were ignited just fine. Pine Cone's wont even burn there.
      Still use the Biolite. It's absolutely stunning piece. Thanks for a great product!!!

      I think you BioLite should answer the doubts of the comments...The aluminum part melts? how long does it take to charge a cell phone? what kind of material is recommended for burning? Can I fully charge the power bank just by burning wood and how long does it take ? If the device malfunctions, it will be replaced or I will have my money back? In case of a natural disaster (when you do not have electricity) will the stove work for a few days or weeks just burning wood? How it works at sub-zero temperature? It will rust if I use it in camping on the beach? For how many minutes or hours can I use it without stopping? Can I use the stove every day and for how long, only minutes or hours? Thnaks!

    Honestly this and the Rhinowolf are on my top list for minimalist camping. I'm not going to really get much use out of 2600ma for a smart phone, but charging up a GPS if lost or a small flip Trac phone this would be perfect for.
    I don't see it as gimmicky at all, it can sanitize water, provide power, cook a hobo pack, provide light, all taking up minimal space and using natural biofuel.. damn.. really what more could you ask for?

      I've noticed that here in Finland pine cone's will burn great. They start quite fast. When i wanted to test the Trangia Alcohol-burned vs Biolite old. The Alcoburner is great when it comes the amount of fuel add per burn compared the Biolite 10min add. However, the Biolite was faster with pine cones in boiling 1 litre of water than Trangia. Trangia with gas-burder is different story. Sso much heat that it will boil the water in couple of minutes. Problem is the gas-tanks. 100 - 400g tanks take up space quite a lot. Trangia is great product, with one exception: You have to carry everything to burn with you. With Biolite you dont need any kind fuel to carry with you. In normal trips i'll take biolite and trangia with me. Just because i want to make sure that we will get our food done, no matter what. And the meantime charge the damn cellphones as well :)
      However, i have different scenario for charging stuff. I've bough 2 x 50W 2,9 kg portable solarpanels. One is enough when it comes to charging the stuff and it can be put outside of the backpack to collect the solar with travels. One emergency car starter will provide more than enough of power for the most uses, including laptop-charging. With 1 solarpanel i can recharge the emergency-powerbank in 4-5 hrs. All this stuff takes up to 3,6kg's of weight. When in need, this setup perform very well. I can power all my Baofeng-radios with this and plenty of more. No need to carry any gas-powered generators around.

    We have the 1st one with all the accessories and love it. It really shines in areas where your not aloud to have a larger fire. You can even use it on a table. So far it,has neither scorched a wooden or melted a plastic table. Is there enough of a difference between the two to meriot getting it if there's nothing wrong with the original one I have. Thank you for the heads up on the upgrade. God bless and stay safe.

    I may have missed it, but is the fan powered by the energy created by the thermoelectric generator? Also what is the amp output on the USB, quickcharge? How long does it take to charge the battery? My impression that its not very practical as a battery charger, but if its powering its own fan and creating that very efficient and hot burn than it could give some gas powered stoves a run for their money.

    • @livingsurvival
      @livingsurvival  7 лет назад +1

      you are correct, it's not very practical for charging for recreational purposes. I was able to get about 20% an hour from the goalzero panel I showed the other day and that to me is awesome. this stove will give you about 10%ish an hour which is not bad but you would have to burn hot that entire time making it not efficient enough to me for anything but a quick emergency charge. The difference here vs. the old is the built in battery runs the fan so any excess energy is directed to the device you are charging where as the old one powered the fan and charged at a rate of 50% less than this one. Plus as long as you keep the battery bank charged before heading out (as you would any battery bank) you have 2600 mAh to use for anything. All in all I think it is a great stove on it's own due to the output and no cleanup. Plus it will certainly give you an emergency charge if needed which to me makes it great for a car prep item. It's a fun stove to use. Thanks for the comment.

    Great review, just wondering if in a grid down situation could this be used for providing heat?

    • @ecospider5
      @ecospider5 4 года назад

      This creates large amounts of co2 so should not be used in an indoor environment. In a pinch you could have 2 large pots of water. Heat one up outside bring it in and huddle around that until the second one is hot. Repeat as needed to keep a small room warm.

    I am curious about what type of wood you where using? I had one of the first models of this stove but sold it because where I live there is not "hardwood" There is pine, cotton wood, elm and aspen and willow along the creeks. I never could get it hot enough and I was constantly having to feed the fire. Too me its more work then its worth.

    A question to those (the more responses the better) who own(ed) both the Biolite Campstove & Campstove 2. Have you found the thermoelectric housing to feel warmer on the Campstove 2? I have.. and it has nothing to do with overlapping flames. Mine actually felt quite warm during the hot ember stage. Under any circumstances have my original Camp stove gotten this warm. Any similar experiences or thoughts? I received my Campstove 2 yesterday and I used it once.. this morning.

    How much fire time does it take to charge the battery bank?

    • @livingsurvival
      @livingsurvival  7 лет назад +9

      a long time. that isn't the point. the point is you have a backup battery bank that does slowly get charged and also charges your device later on.

    • @mikebarker9187
      @mikebarker9187 5 лет назад +3

      That is entirely the point. The claim that a fire will produce heat which will turn a fan which will turn a magnet which will produce current which will charge a battery which you can then use to charge your USB device. ... You can get battery banks elsewhere. You can get stoves elsewhere. These are ubiquitous. What this thing claims is unique, namely, that it can use a small fire to charge a battery.

    • @1kreature
      @1kreature 5 лет назад +5

      The correct ansver i is actually simple:
      Power Output is 5V, 2A USB but the thermoelectric generator (TEG) has a peak power of 3W.
      Thus, assuming 90-96% efficiency from the TEG to the battery and assuming 2600 mAh battery has approximately 9.62 Wh of energy storage, you get approx 3 hours and 30 minutes.
      So yes it does take a while to fully recharge it, and I wish they'd include a higher generator capacity, but it is still quite awesome!

      it would take quite a while and that really isn't the purpose. the purpose is to be able to have a power bank included which will trickle charge but also charge your device. meaning you would want to start off with a full charge. either way it is more efficient than the first but even without the battery pack it is still a great stove on its own.

      you could but they don't recommend it since it will not combust as easily as pellets, chips or just twigs and sticks.

      May work for tempering, not sure about hardening.

      Very highly doubt you can temper or harden aluminum requires more heat than biomass is willing to provide and aluminum will fall apart if the process isn't good enough.

      If you used coal, not damp sticks, it would work.
      But it may be so hot that it also melt the device.

    Another review where the fire is built from the bottom up. Upside down fire. Less feeding. No one does it right.
