@@dou5397Honestly, I wouldn’t exactly consider the change a retcon for the fact that we never had any sort of irrefutable confirmation of him actually pulling the trigger, which is very important in this series. In 7, we show up, Sawashiro is sitting there silently, and he has the gun near him. In the end, that’s really where the on-scene implications stop. One of the major cruxes throughout not just 7 but the whole series is that authority and especially laws both legal and moral can be manipulated by those with enough power, so Aoki setting up Sawashiro specifically to plan the hit on him somewhere he can’t escape is perfectly reasonable considering it’s the same guy who broke legal conventions and won both party chair of one of Japan’s main political parties and seat as Governor of Tokyo. He undeniably has the influence to see it through, and the mountain of evidence against Sawashiro predates that one supposed hit by decades, so it makes sense he would get life anyway. I feel like it’s very reasonable to say that the door was intentionally left open for Sawashiro to make a return, seeing as the new generation at RGG seem to really want to amend the damages caused by the “this character is going to appear for one game and never show up again ever” trope the series followed for so long. With the heavy political themes 7 had even compared to the rest of the series, I think it makes sense that Sawashiro’s conviction would fall through due to his actual charge of murder being confirmed as a frame job on behalf of the disgraced ex-Governor. In Yakuza, if we don’t see a death on-screen, it probably isn’t fatal, and even then there are exceptions. I’m not going to deny that this would be a pretty huge retcon in any other series, but with the Yakuza games having deep undertones of the themes of moral nuance, I think it’s fair to give it a more unique interpretation of what would qualify for a full-blown retcon. _Kashiwagi and Lau_ were retcons. They straight up returned as ghosts in 6 - they were dead as shit. That’s an irrefutable statement that they were supposed to be dead before 7 and got confirmed as the same exact people in 8. I think Sawashiro being led onto the scene by Aoki and falsely convicted for Hoshino’s murder is realistic and practical enough for it to be at least an intentionally open-ended incident.
