To my eyes this is all cyclic and the US is at a specific phase of a repeating cycle : Back to maximum oligarchy, maximum xenophobia and maximum ideological discourse. On the surface, that is, because below the noise and the foam on the top, the average American is far from being an extremist, or an idiot. It's just that the structure of the system is past-its-time, un-representative and in need of a major overhaul. I am not holding my breath, however, because the quasi-religious fever around the Constitution is done for show by those who benefit from its failures. This is not a Left vs Right problem ; it's a question of exploiting critical systemic failures for influence and financial advantage. Oligarchs are prompt to turn their coats to whatever team leads the game and they are embedded in the major parties, always pushing for wedge issues. Sowing confusion opens up a rich demand for "solutions". It's like selling Preparation H or insurance : You need to make a case that the need is critical. Recent critiques of the US' propensity to engage worldwide stem from all kinds of sources that have nothing in common. Some come from the anti-militaristic hard-left ; some from right-wing isolationists who'd rather the money stayed home ; some from white supremacists who have been trying to sell an anti-semitic narrative about "Atlantist" or "International" cabal of the likes of Soros bent on replacing white folks with brown-skinned indentured servants. As always, mixing a bit of truth with a handful of fantasy makes for a good story. Had the US been successful in Afghanistan, we'd see little of this but military engagement in the Middle-East and in Afghanistan has exposed these operations at best as inconclusive in terms of benefits, as well as supremely costly. It seems clear to me that the majority of US citizens have never forgiven Biden for the absurdly badly managed exit from Afghanistan, which at the very least, while not being a conscious item must have tainted his presidency. I recently listened to a podcast given by a couple of right-wing university professors. What was striking in their isolationist discourse was the reactionary short-sightedness. I believe that this widely shared wariness found in the American public is entirely the fault of miscommunication by Democrats. We stopped framing an outbound America as beneficial for the long term prospects of the US and the OECD in general, and as legitimately motivated by "help thy neighbours and friends when they are in danger". Everything has been buried in a wooden tongue for years, in a language that no longer makes any sense. As a result voters opt for the guys who "talk straight" whatever they say... and they end up with Donald Trump ; more for his feigned straightforwardness than for anything he actually says. This will bite those US voters right back. But I also see this as a blip on the radar : However hyperbolic and vitriolic the tirades from the MAGA camp, they cannot and will not last : The next two years will be their swan song. Very well-written thoughts. I might add that one must look into the how this vicious circle can be unwound. Every bad elected official seems to lead to the rise of a worse one fueled by the special interest groups’ power of money and influence. Then there comes the short-term personal interests of those in power to maintain that power for as long as possible by massaging the populous and their issues. Case in point, no elected official has ever dared to touch the mother of all issues: budget deficit. Why? Because it would put their power at risk even though it is the right thing to do to sustain the nation long-term. In my opinion, all international problems, interventionist and non-interventionist approaches are dwarfed by the growing dangers of unwinding economic structures that have only been complicated by temporary bandaid solutions that are now permanent parts of the economy which will eventually will spiral out of control and make America’s ideals and values a secondary priority in front of real dangers on the ground which will lead to the suspension of constitutional rights that held this nation together since it took its current form. I believe that the economy is the source of America’s future, be it prosperity or demise, and if the elected officials dont sacrifice their personal desires for the good of the nation, they will continue to lead the country down a very rough path. I suspect that they’re betting on a future magical grand solution to all the major problems, and they may see AI being their savior. But Im afraid that this will give birth to replacing all the current problems and dangers with ones that no one is equipped to deal with.

Maybe now he does see that capitalism was/is the flaw in liberal democracy…it seems to lead to oligarchy, which then eats itself out of house and home. That said, the collapse of socialist/communist systems that embraced a narrow version of capitalism for economic development also developed oligarchy and or dictatorship. Perhaps the overriding lesson is bot internal systems AND international stability MUST have checks and balances or human nature itself will destroy every system regardless of its initial intentions.
European tribes fought amongst themselves for thousands of years and only recently learned to get along (for the most part). I believe America will gradually unzip from the rest of the world, which will doom Ukraine and Taiwan, but the democratic countries in the various regions such as Europe, SE Asia, S. America and Africa will band together to repel China and Russia and take care of their citizens, while trade with America shrinks away. Then the Americans will all look at each other, pleased as punch that there are fewer outsiders, fewer freeloaders, less education, less healthcare, fewer people to pick and transport food, more guns, more billionaires, and more cheesy golf resorts. (This is what has been happening post-Brexit as Brits wake up to the realization that trade with Australia and New Zealand cannot replace Europe and that pushing out visitors means that there is nobody left to mop the floor or change granny's diaper.) Meanwhile, Europe, SE Asia, and the developing world cannot prostrate themselves at the feet of the American export market. Just carry on and have a good life, and forget about vacations in Florida or Las Vegas for the foreseeable future. Oh, and Canada should probably join the EU ...
There is an increase lack of trust in US in EU just because we see them as only minding their own interests and using threats when they can't get what they want. We can clearly see now that reliance on NATO has made us irrelevant on the international geopolitics. Many EU citizens see the war in Ukraine more as a turf between US and Russia then an issue of Europe with Russia. It's the reason some are pushing quite hard the idea of having an European army that would guarantee the protection against Russia independently of US. I follow what is happening in Japan, SK and Australia and I see this trend of not going against US but also keeping their option opened. It just crossed my mind that EU could joim BRICS and offer Euro as the common currency :))
Each European country helping Ukraine with ammunition or pharmaceutical stuff plus the EU have helped very much from the beginning of the war, EU gave money and released Russian assets and did many sanctions to Russia and continue. Europe i believe that wait Trump's administration to see what will do, with Ukraine, NATO and tariffs to have an closer look about it. We don't know yet what to do Elonia,he tries to change the politics in UK and Germany so far,we have the Greenland's problem which is also European with Denmark who is both nato and EU member. Our Allie USA is unsafe lately 😞 for NATO, EU,Canada, Mexico, Panama and god knows what country will be targeting next!!! Russia, China and USA maybe are new allies now and Europe and the rest of democratic countries to be enemies, maybe our future is written in the rock and we can't change anything or maybe we the people will can change the doctrine. Time will show us what coming next!!!
Nayib Bukele didn't imprison "most of the male population", he imprisioned the gang members, who in El Salvador wear distinctive tatoos. But indeed he has a touch of disrespect for democratic procedures, sth that's popular when you have such a high level of corruption like they do in the Salvadorean congress and courts.
Bukele is a joke and a traitor to his own ancestors. He will bent himself backwards to any zionist billionaire, even if that means absolute destruction of it's sovereignty.
Hasn't bureaucracy - and its regulations - become "authoritarian" as well? Basically, democracy is about the will of the majority. Does it really matter WHO ignores the will of the majority?
The world is still of diverse nations, and neither the United States nor the UN has ever spoke for it. That the US was and may yet be relatively the most economically and militarily powerful is not that important. People go on in their shambolic way.
“the basic template of coercive power (often hidden, always deceptive, and exercised in the name of something other than itself) is common throughout history. If “the name of God” is beyond reproach, then intelligent rulers will exercise their power in the name of God. If invoking the name of democracy, or the state, or the emperor will empower them, they will act in the name of any of these. This is the unchanging characteristic of those who effectively rule the masses: they will say and do anything to establish a system that serves their interests. Stated another way: morality will never stop an individual or group that’s willing to lie, steal, intimidate, imprison, torture, or kill in pursuit of their aims. Likewise, a piece of paper with words written on it (a constitution) and an easily manipulated democratic form of government will not stop them either. This latter point is particularly relevant today because the “opinion-forming agencies” have done everything in their power to convince us otherwise.” Tragedy and Hope 101: The Illusion of Justice, Freedom and Democracy :Joseph Plummer
But there is a bipartisan consensus on foreign policy: it is the neocon consensus that brought us the Iraq invasion and occupation, the Gaza genocide, the proxy war in Ukraine and the coming wars with China and Iran. There is no disagreement among the elites of the two parties. The split is between the people, who want peace and less inequality, and the oligarchic party elites, who want permanent war and a transfer of wealth from the many to the few.
Or they're smart enough to know that there is no point in spending time refining that estimate. We don't have a world government, we're not going to wave a magic wand and de-carbonize the planet. It isn't happening. What will happen is mitigation and some geo-engineering, neither of which can be discussed in public right now without getting burnt at the stake.
Could that be that you are COMPLETELY overestimating climate change? Especially in the "very soon" timeframe? All we really know about climate is that it changes.
I would not recommend somone who completly failed by claiming that liberal democracy would be the ultimate point of humanity´s ideological evolution to make such bold statements again.
Multipolarity does not mean the world will be a jungle. BRICS can create a new world order that is more just and peaceful. Fukuyama cannot seem to imagine a world without a hegemon. He's caught up in zero-sum game mentality.
China is 99 percent of countries in the world's largest trading partner, not only India's. Alliances outside of the US, such as the global south, will have a huge influence on how much power the US can wield. Trump has a poor understanding of world dynamics.
US as "an exporter of stability". I'd love to believe that. Please point me in the map where that happened in the last 30 years? Maybe Israeli "stability" (at the cost of many worthless Arabs) and that's about it.
have you ever heard of American wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, etc. ? where have you been hibernating ... ? have you just waken up yesterday ... ?
This is an incorrect interpretation of events. He asks a reluctant NATO partner to increase defense preparation. He and any person aware of history knows that in worldwide Cold or hot war, he may need to deploy US troops, anywhere, to attain advantage to win the struggle for freedom. We supported and defended both Greenland and Denmark as recently as WW2. We still have deployed troops in Poland, England, Germany and Italy invited by and supporting the defense of the West. Acknowledging the strategic importance of many allies and choke points and reminding that the use of force is part of the strategy of the containment, isolation and defeat of tyranny by the US and it's willing partners cannot be viewed as a threat to friends. It is a call to sometimes reluctant but essential friends to reawaken and prepare.
It is difficult to take Fukuyama's analysis seriously, because he is so enamored with the liberal order that he doesn't have much objectivity. When an expert is personally bought into an idea, he/she becomes vulnerable to being blindsided by not considering scenarios that he/she dislikes. By the same arguments he is making now (decoupling is 'short sighted'), he would have been harshly critical of George Kennan's long telegram. He would have railed on 'very short-sighted' attempt to isolate and antagonize an important WW2 ally, rather than trying to engage and work for broad common good, etc. Liberal order worked for a while, because at the time many nations genuinely wanted it to work, China included because it was to their benefit. Now many nations do not want it. US deluded itself that we can sustain it by shear force and will, in large part thanks to the 'end of history' talk. How he can acknowledge that US is much weaker, and still thinks that upholding the world order is the right thing to do is just irritating. A more appropriate 'affordable' goal for a weaker power (US) is to maintain and protect a regional block, which is where we are headed.
Liberal world order also worked because after the collapse of the USSR, the US was the sole hegemon and no country could match its power in the slightest. It was its principal guarantor-enforcer.
Exactly. I would just put up a graph of the exponentially increasing national debt. How exactly is that sustainable? We defeated ideological communism. Thats enough. It is not our responsability to police or feed or protect the rest of the world forever. Its time to tightn the belt. 80 years of subsidizing the rest of the world has gotten us nowhere.
Agreed. His strategy seems to be a) America should rollover economically with China and let them hack and play us like fools; b) go to war with them regarding Taiwan; c) have America maintain post WW2 military hegemony as if we have the same relative dominance we did 3 decades ago. He is contradictory and very neoconnish, yet oddly anti American as well. Its bizarre.

Remember when "sanction" used to mean something that is approved or blessed. Now, it means just the opposite. Awful in olde English used to mean "full of awe" or awe inspiring. Now, it just been awful; dreadful, isn't it?
Trump has a "mandate". Really? He got 51% of the votes. Only 2/3 of the eligible electorate actually cast votes. (100 million eligible voters didn't bother.) So Trump got the vote of one-third of the eligible electorate.
Wow, the first line "we might not be able to use our might to get our way" was a total put off. This is a very sad attitude and one of the reasons the rest of the World is so very glad that the US hegemony is falling. Might should not make right in the mind of a moral person. US lost its way before WWII. One could say as far back as the Monroe Doctrine. If you watch Olympic games from a viewpoint outside the US one sees their gloating and need to dominate sports and athletes and it is sickening. What is it now, 4 UNSC vetoes by the US against a ceasefire in Gaza? True ugliness.
I would remind the very smug Mr Bremmer that "the Danes" are actually 27 countries that will stand together as 1, if and when Trump does something stupid. What a disappointment! I thought Ian Bremmer was worth listening to.
Those can only be protected with strength. Strength can only be maintained with wealth. That means making occasional logical self interested decisions. Another vietnam? Because the guy is totally unqualified for the job. The FBI is supposed to be apolitical. You chip away at the checks and balances of our government by putting people who are personally loyal to the president but not the Constitution in such important roles.
So why is a liberal erosion of respect for the rule of law an issue, but the selfsame conservative erosion isn't? How is someone as sharp as Fukuyama oblivious to such an obvious authoritarian play? Further, how are all of Trump's frivolous lawsuits not the very definition of trying to achieve legitimacy through procedure? The man's biases are blatant.

We are going back to 'identity politics' where we are excluded.

Fukuyama is right on when he says that neoliberalism and identity politics have created the current mess. He's wrong that the US was an exporter of stability (eg war in Iraq). Bremmer comes across as a modern pirate, practically cheering Trump on to continuing being an authoritarian turd. Both of them make the mistake of asserting that what's good for the US is good for Americans, it will be good for rich, elite Americans like these two but the working class and poor will be, if anything, worse off. As much as Bremmer wants a new wave of toxic nationalism to sweep across the US, the reality is likely to be much grimmer even for most Americans. If there is no pretense for a rules based order as the US becomes an autocracy like Russia, expect a rush of countries to develop nukes. There are lots of countries that could develop nukes very quickly. Bremmer and other Americans who openly celebrate Trump's ugliness should be careful what they hope for.
Hey GZero, great show. Just a clarification on the comment about China being India's biggest trade partner. While technically True, the trade balance is heavily against India and the deficit is increasingly rising. This video is about the state of the world in 2025, particularly focusing on the rise of a "G-Zero" world, where no single power dominates global affairs. Here are some key takeaways: * The Rise of G-Zero: The video argues that the world is moving towards a G-Zero world, where there is no dominant global leader. This is due to the decline of US global influence, the rise of China, and the fragmentation of the international order. * The Impact of G-Zero: The video discusses the potential consequences of a G-Zero world, including increased geopolitical instability, the rise of rogue actors, and a higher risk of conflict. * The Role of the US: The video examines the role of the United States in this changing world order. It discusses the potential for the US to retreat from global leadership or to attempt to reassert its dominance. * The Views of Francis Fukuyama: The video features an interview with political scientist Francis Fukuyama, who discusses his views on the current state of the world and the challenges facing liberal democracy. Fukuyama argues that the rise of G-Zero is a result of several factors, including the decline of US leadership, the rise of China, and the erosion of trust in liberal institutions. Overall, the video provides a thoughtful and insightful analysis of the current state of global affairs and the challenges that lie ahead. It is a must-watch for anyone interested in international relations and the future of the world.

Fukuyama has to accept he was wrong 20 years ago and that we are now in a multi polar world.
Francis so politely describes the type of chaos that Donald Trump, is going to unleash in the future for America!
The Fourth Estate still exists at GZERO.
Well said!!!!
Canada should probably join BRICCS.
Each European country helping Ukraine with ammunition or pharmaceutical stuff plus the EU have helped very much from the beginning of the war,
EU gave money and released Russian assets and did many sanctions to Russia and continue.
Bureaucratization is just 2nd order militarization - Ludwig von Mises.
This latter point is particularly relevant today because the “opinion-forming agencies” have done everything in their power to convince us otherwise.”
Tragedy and Hope 101: The Illusion of Justice, Freedom and Democracy :Joseph Plummer
Gzero is pretty good. But both Ian and Fukuyama focus on what they know. They COMPLETELY underestimate the very soon to come impact of climate change.
And don't forget about the upcoming *zombie apocalypse* which is linked to climate change.
@@youknowwho5900 Need to read more...
What do you exactly mean by climate change?
I would not recommend somone who completly failed by claiming that liberal democracy would be the ultimate point of humanity´s ideological evolution to make such bold statements again.
Multipolarity does not mean the world will be a jungle. BRICS can create a new world order that is more just and peaceful. Fukuyama cannot seem to imagine a world without a hegemon. He's caught up in zero-sum game mentality.
China is 99 percent of countries in the world's largest trading partner, not only India's.

Denmark is in NATO. Trump wants to fight NATO 😂
Taking off the camouflage, show off the real pirate face.

It’s great to see Prof. Fukuyama again. Enjoyed a wonderful lecture by him at INCAE, Costa Rica in 2011. Greetings from this part of the world!
Good video. Lots to think about.
If Frances Fukuyama was running for president I would run to the polls ... Most of the conservatives and liberals today are the opposite, 'intellectually dishonest'. 🙏🏻🙏🏽🙏🏾
Speak for yourself as a strong Liberal/Progressive for 50 years me and my kind know exactly how things work.
Terminology can be so funny, misleading, and the opposite of what philosophy created it.. The Neo-liberalism Mr. Fukuyama mentions was started by the GOP under Reagan so should then be called Neo- Conservatism.
Remember when "sanction" used to mean something that is approved or blessed. Now, it means just the opposite. Awful in olde English used to mean "full of awe" or awe inspiring. Now, it just been awful; dreadful, isn't it?
Neo-Conservatives are conservatives who formerly were liberals.
A cogent exposition of the pitfalls liberalism has fallen into and how to extricate it.
It’s the end of history for America. Good night & good luck!
Trump has a "mandate". Really?
He got 51% of the votes.
Only 2/3 of the eligible electorate actually cast votes. (100 million eligible voters didn't bother.)
So Trump got the vote of one-third of the eligible electorate.
Actually, he had less than 50% of voters supporting him.
Too many voters didn't show up.
Less than 23% of Americans voted for tRump.
As someone who listens to Peter thiel pretty often I would love to hear what this man has to say. As Americas it is our duty to stay open minded
No mention of overspending in military budget overseas and the big deficits
I would remind the very smug Mr Bremmer that "the Danes" are actually 27 countries that will stand together as 1, if and when Trump does something stupid. What a disappointment! I thought Ian Bremmer was worth listening to.

Both of them make the mistake of asserting that what's good for the US is good for Americans, it will be good for rich, elite Americans like these two but the working class and poor will be, if anything, worse off.

This video is about the state of the world in 2025, particularly focusing on the rise of a "G-Zero" world, where no single power dominates global affairs.
Here are some key takeaways:
* The Rise of G-Zero: The video argues that the world is moving towards a G-Zero world, where there is no dominant global leader.
