  • Have you ever wondered how chess superstar Alexandra Botez would fare in a poker tournament? Well, here’s your chance as ice hockey legend Deryk Engelland puts her in a tough spot on the river!
    When you are playing in a large pot and you have a short stack you should be aware that it is usually the best play to shove all-in with a poker hand that is likely good but very vulnerable to being outdrawn.
    Alexandra Botez is a 28 year old American-Canadian chess player, she became a five-time Canadian National Girls Champion and won the U.S. Girls Nationals at age 15. Recently, she has appeared on both poker cash games and tournament poker streams, one of her first appearances was on the Hustler Casino Live stream with MrBeast, Ninja, Phil Hellmuth ‘The Poker Brat’, Tom Dwan ‘durrrr’ and Alan Keating where she won over $500,000. She has over 1,430,000 RUclips subscribers and over 1,200,000 Twitch followers.
    Deryk Engelland is a 41 year old Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman. Engelland played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames and Vegas Golden Knights over his eleven-season career in the National Hockey League (NHL). Throughout his career, Engelland was best known for his physical play and fighting abilities.
    The 2023 Enclave Celebrity Invitational was a $50,000 freeroll hosted in the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 72-entrant field included celebrities, content creators, professional athletes, business leaders and professional poker players. With the likes of Alexandra Botez, Josh Richards, Bryce Hall, Nik Airball, Pierson Wodzynski, Nick Austin, Andre Drummond, Princess Love, and many more battling it out for the $50,000 prize pool.
    Neither player cashed in this event.
    Freeroll - 2023 Enclave Celebrity Invitational - Results
    1st: Qiyu Zhou ‘Nemo’ - China - $20,000
    2nd: William Pulte - U.S.A - $10,000
    3rd: Chris Grove - U.S.A - $5,000
    4th: Brandon Marshall - U.S.A - $3,500
    5th: Nathan Webb - England - $2,500
    6th: Joey Hamilton - U.S.A - $2,000
    7th: Manny Kess - U.S.A - $1,500
    8th: Chase DeMoor - U.S.A - $1,000
    9th: Steven Markowitz - U.S.A - $1,000
    🔍 Pre-flop:
    Deryk Engelland limps in with K9 of spades for 20,000 from under-the-gun +1. Following suit, Jessica Canseco in the cutoff takes a similar approach, limping in with K8 of diamonds; Nathan Webb is next to act in the small blind and completes with A8o, Alexandra Botez checks her option with AQo in the big blind and they go 4-way to the flop.
    💸 Flop - Kc Qd Tc
    Webb and Botez check the extremely connected flop to Engelland, who fires out a bet of 35,000 with top pair and a gutshot straight draw. Canseco, with top pair and a backdoor flush draw, makes the call, while Webb folds from the small blind. Botez, with second pair and a gutshot straight draw, decides to stick around to see the turn.
    💣 Turn - Jc
    The turn brings in the flush which now also gives Botez the ace-high straight; she checks again to Engelland, who bets 75,000 with the bottom end of a straight. Canseco folds her pair of kings, but Botez decides to just call with her straight.
    🌊 River - Js
    The board pairs on the river, and now the value of Botez’s ace-high straight shrinks even more; she checks for a final time to Engelland. He bets 90,000 with his bad straight which is enough to put Botez all-in. Back on chess superstar Botez with the A-high straight, she will surely call….right? Watch to the end of this poker video to find out!

    whether his bluff on river (if he even thinks it is, very possible his lack of poker experience leads him to think otherwise) is good or not would be the times his hand is actually good + the % of the time she folds to be 21.18% of the time or not. at her SPR she should have a good chunk of an ace or flush or boat a good chunk of the time on that river (one might say that a lot of the hands that make boats by the river were preflop shoves, and for many players that is true, but she checked back aq with 10 bb's pre, so she definitely can have a lot of rivered boats, mostly j10, qj, but kj should exist in there too) that at some % get to this river in this way. from her perspective after his bet only needs to tie or win 17.4% of the time, and is playing against somebody who might have no idea what he's doing in a tourney with crazy fast blinds where she already put in 6.5 bb's out of 11 to start the hand. i mean if he showed up with say j6 suited would anybody be surprised? not after seeing this one. she can't fold against a player like this.

    Ah, I reckon that low straight against a tight player was a 'heroic' shove by Engelland at the time. But also a preflop mistake by Botez. AQ isn't AA or KK, so being clever & slow playing it with 10bb seems dodgy. On the turn, Engelland was stacked, so a shove there seems the go. Not sure why she didn't snap call the river either, hard to put E on a boat imo.

    Watching the play here reminds me of opponents I encounter at the WSOP--only it's a tableful of LPPs rather than one or two in the early rounds, along with fair tournament players and pros.
    As an aside: Alexandra Botez is by no means a top-class chess player. Even in a women-only event, she would get slaughtered by the grandmasters and IMs.

    hanks when he bets the river says "will this work, it looks like he's repping a boat now", umm no, she enters the river with 4.5 blinds, started the hand with 10 blinds, even at high level poker standards (the shows he usually is commentating), he does not, nor shouldn't, need a boat to be making this 4.5 bb river bet. he's lucky she's even here thinking of folding at all after already putting in 5.5 bb's of her 10 she started the hand with.

After a casual watch of Celebrity Poker on Wednesday night, I witnessed the chip leader at the feature table ask if Q-K-A-2-3 was a legal straight. • @jasonbatteiger2421
    @jasonbatteiger2421 3 месяца назад

    first off, i doubt anybody but maybe hockey fights enthusiasts would ever once consider d.engelland a "hockey legend" he was a goon only. pretty sure at 20bb's not raising in some fashion from 3 limps to your big blind is quite bad, and botez this isn't her first day playing poker by now, should know that. this is even before she also learns that her opponents (appear here anyway) to not be tenured poker players, i.e. they want to limp all sorts of garbage. i'm also guessing (i don't know the blind structure at all in this celebrity tourney, pretty sure the WPT's celebrity invite tourneys had the worst blind structures of any WPT events) this tourney has a bad blind structure. that even MORE incentivizes just picking up those limps, a shove easily does that most of the time. hell if these players are bad enough her rate of being called probably goes up too, even with the hands she completely dominates.

    • @jasonbatteiger2421
      @jasonbatteiger2421 3 месяца назад

      nevermind, i misheard/misread, she only has 10bb more to start this hand, that's obscene to not raise/shove here pre, and unless she's ONLY studied/played cash hold em (which there are hours by now of evidence she has) and literally zero tourneys played in nor studied for, would know this.

    • @jasonbatteiger2421
      @jasonbatteiger2421 3 месяца назад

      i mean just this one hand here, if it was played in a free/bar league hold em super fast blinds tourney, the regs would know these people simply don't play (maybe ever) hold em tourneys after they saw this hand.

    The problem with YOU analyzing this is ridiculous. You'd have better luck with crotch theory optimal at this table over trying to break down these hands with standard play or gto. Botez usually plays great, or at least solid. But when you play with people who don't know what there doing, and they are literally limping, and then flatting preflop with pocket aces all before the flop, last to act 5 ways...you start to play that shit limp, flat, lazy ok...let's all see the flop. There's just no point in trying to break these hands down. Your better off breaking down bingo. He certainly wasn't bluffing, who knows if he knew he had a straight let alone an ace and a 9 make a straight lol
