I can watch videos about fishing, how to fish a certain lure a certain way until the end of time. This is hands down some of the best 25 minutes I've spent listening to a professional angler who has seen the change of time, technology, and lures and still applies the basics with intuitive information and essentially rational thinking. Great interview with Rick Clunn. Nice work John.

Hey, Rick! The more I watch your videos. The more I realize the amount of learned knowledge you have on Bass fishing. I understand every word of it. I could listen and ask questions all day and night about bass fishing. Thanks to the young man for recording you Rick. Or we would lose alot of good info on bass fishing. I seen on your wall about still playing when you get old. I am 60 now. But I still love to fish and find new places to fish and the different ponds and areas to find bass. The different speeds that each bass likes to trigger the strike vs the right lure during the temp, wind and the amount of sun. Then what time of day. The science of bass fishing is what keeps me playing and fishing. Good for you Rick Clunn! Keep going! I will continue to watch and learn as I get older too. Shawn.

My old next door neighbor Richard Slussenger use to be a salesman for a oilfield company in Houston, he told me he'd fish with Rick on Conroe, said Rick was a engineer for schlumberger and quit his job, bought a trailer and a Jon Boat and moved on the lake, and started to guide on Conroe and fish tournaments! Richard himself was a very good fisherman and even had fished, more than Rick back then! But he told me he didn't have the sack that Rick did! to move his family out to Conroe and follow his dreams! Like Rick! I think he always regretted!! told me that Rick Glunn was the most natural and knowledgeable Bass Fisherman of all the Professional Bass Fisherman on the tour! I also believe in his ability to access a situation on the water and put to his advantage is what makes a great fisherman and tough competitor!! Great interview with a Bass Pro legend! Thanks Byrne

REALLY wanted to shake his hand when he was just at Champlain but figured with Covid I'd show him the added respect of staying clear. But saw a tournament video from the 70s maybe 80s where he was talking about his enjoyment being out in nature and how at times he could use his understanding of what's going on put and around the water to help him catch fish. Been a BIG FAN since. Class act, super intelligent and still heading out on places like Champlain when the winds whipping. Amazing fellow

When Rick Clunn speaks about life or fishing you turn a recorder of some kind on. The stuff he put out in a 1 minute 10 second video about spinner bait fishing years ago, was solid gold for those that caught it. He said a spinner bait with willow leaf blades in the 4 and 5 size aren't a big fish catcher like a Colorado blade unless you use a 6 or 7 willow leaf blade, because they don't displace enough water. When he said that, I immediately went and ordered 6 7 and even number 8 and 9 willow leaf blades they use on musky spinner baits, to put on 3/4 ounce and up spinner baits. They ride lower in the water column and when a 3/4 ounce spinner bait hits a log or limb it has a louder thump when the head hits compared to 1/2 or smaller. I learned that on my own by experimenting with sizes and blade, and trailer combinations. My best spinner bait is a do it mold banana head 3/4 ounce with a silver 7 willow leaf, and a gold Colorado blade, with a white skirt and a chartreuse keitech trailer. I have caught more 4 plus pound fish on that bait then all the other blades combined.

I first met Rick Clun in about '88 on Lake Meade (Nevada). In '91, I moved to Montgomery, TX (where he lived) and regularly ran into him at the post office, grocery store and around town, but I never was able to just sit down and talk to him. He was one of my biggest heroes, and I couldn't approach him and start a conversation beyond, "How you doing, Rick?"
I don't think people who fish and talk about "patterns" realize that Rick Clunn was the first person to keep meticulous notes pertaining to conditions that prevailed where and while he was fishing. Nor do I think anyone before him invested as much time and thought into their gear and preparation to fish. Between his attention to detail and preparation, it has never been a surprise to me that Rick Clunn was so incredibley successful on the bass tournament circuits.
On the lighter side, I recall a video Rick did 40(?) years ago for 3M, narrated by Homer Circle. Rick was fishing a tough day with Al Lindner (In Fisherman) and caught a monster that neither he or Al would call a ten-pounder. (Al kept telling Rick to "Say it, go ahead and say it...") Rick made the mistake of unhooking the fish while it was still over the water and the fish squirmed and got away. If Al Lindner hadn't grabbed Rick by the ankle, he'd have gone completely into the water after that fish.
(6:29-It was Zell Rowland who showed me how to trim the lower lip of the Rebel Pop-R to make it more effective).

Having spent the past 45 minutes watching your 2 videos on Rick Clunn, I find you unearthed a tremendous amount of unknown information. I grant that you have to sift the wheat from the chaff but it is there to be gleaned. I am up in Rick's age bracket and have seen quite a few supposed great baits come through. Spinnerbait was the go to search and destroy bait.Pop'r were next, Spooks not far removed. Rick's ideas of hunting like a lion in Africa analysising the thoughts on this is very true.Keep up the fantastic research which you have put forth in doing these recent Masterpieces. The college boys and modern technology have come so far but as Rick stated it's still predator versus prey.

I know Northern-strain LMB are more likely to chase fast-moving baits and Florida-strain LMB tend to prefer slow-moving baits. That's why deadsticking or soaking your worm can catch big fish in the south.

It's so true. I remember I throwing a trap well into August and still catching fish. I would get bites because I would give it big jerks like I was ripping it out of grass (even if I wasn't fishing grass) and fish would just react to it. Went fishing with my dad and he couldn't believe it because the way most people use a trap is just straight reeling it in or Yoyo it.

I was in a BASS open on the Harris Chain a decade ago. I witnessed a pro boater “dead sticking” a worm. The pro caught almost 30 pounds. It works.
Somewhere I read, an article written back in the 1950’s, the original “plastic” worms were designed for anglers to simply cast out your worm and let it lay on the bottom. Each angler brought multiple rod/reel combo’s and while sitting in your boat you had four or five rods casted out in all directions. Just like catfishing. You simply waited for a worm to be picked up.

Awesome! I've been a big Rick Clunn fan all of my life. Lots of good information right there. To add to the bait ball conversation... I feel like the concept of probability also plays into it. The chances of catching a single bait fish is much lower than the chances of catching a couple of bait fish when they rush a cluster of bait fish. The chaos of the bait ball panicking would elevate the chance of success for the predator. Anywho, great video and I'm jealous that you got to sit and pick Mr Clunns brain, he's such a good fisherman.

For Florida waters when I lived there for a decade, in my experience fishing Florida, that not only because of the heat but because of the Gators and Gars and other major threats in the waters that most Bass in most waters seem to stay hidden in the thick grass and muck and don't strike like you think from fast moving baits, unless it's a considerable meal they don't tend to bite but when ever I Texas rigged a plastic and worked it slow in the muck and would be fish on no problem especially in the rivers and small lakes.

On the conversation of retrieve speed, it seems logical to suspect that water temp plays a big roll in a fish's response. Although I am curious about fishing faster as I tend to fish a lot slower and tend to dead stick soft plastics...probably too much.
