Bladee has been the only artist to get me to tears in my life. It sounds stupid but he just stands out as a real and tangible. He's a "trash star" he's not above or below me, he's just a person who feels and I can empathize with him.
AVAA, I'm not quite a boy but definitely an Internet. I had no idea Lucky Luke was a comic and thought it was a Stars Wars reference like in the opening lyrics. Sonically, I think Bladee is stretching his voice in new ways in this album, and he's rapping harder than he ever has in a while. In terms of meaning, I appreciate the historical connection to Misanthrope. I appreciate that even after his forray into more positive themes, Bladee recognizes that it isn't over and he has to face his darkness again (there was a bit of that in Spiderr, but here it is in full force). Many fans are saying "Evil Bladee is back!" But to me the darkness of Cold Visions feels very different from the darkness in his pre 2019 catalogue--- it doesn't feel dissociated and apathetic, he lets himself get angry and there is definitrly a search for hope and recognition that there is a better way out than just dying, even in between the c'est la vie resignation.
AVAA! As a long-time fan of Bladee's who falls way outside of his usual demographics (not white, male, or young), I LOOOVED Cold Visions. I turned 30 in February, and Bladee released this album for his own 30th Birthday. It's fascinating to listen to it and see him stylistically working through his back catalog through the tracks, and reflecting on the ~15 years he's been in the industry and the pressure that comes with it. So many moments sampled from older songs... I think it especially comes through in the songs that refer to The Fool. It was good seeing Sherm back in the credits, the guy has had a rough few years. And, whoa, James Ferarro!? AWESOME! I agree on there being a bit too much F1lthy, though... The best moment on the album for me was probably when Mechatok came in on the production side. I would have liked a bit more Whitearmor, but I'm extremely biased as he's my favourite member of Drain Gang. Literally exchanged rings and walked down the aisle last summer to his instrumental track Kisses and Hugs. (Btw, my Dad walked me up to Glenn Gould's 1981 recording of the Goldberg Variations. My wedding was definitely a musical experience. 😅) Back on topic, I would love to see a deep dive into Whitearmor's influence within Drain Gang, he's way more than a producer in the group. He's actually one of the core four along with Bladee, Ecco2k and Thaiboy Digital, they were school friends. (So was Yung Lean, though he was a couple of years younger and was Bladee's little brother's friend before he got close to the others.) Just something to consider if you're interested, might be worth diving into in your own time even if you don't make a video on him!
AVAA Professor Skye! With how much you talked about it in this video I thought you would appreciate knowing you are one of several forces that led me to seek therapy a few months back. I saw someone in the live chat complaining about how much you talked about it and I think that is lame. I appreciate you bringing attention to therapy and what resources there are. I have used university resources to keep it from my parents who very much look down on therapy for some reason. AVAA, but (please read lol) I honestly feel that this video is somewhat lazy in a way that betrays both you and Bladee. I'm not mad you're comparing him to Taylor Swift but have feedback on how this could be done much more interestingly from an academic drainer. The similarities between Bladee + Taylor Swift in this album cycle actually make for a very ironic juxtaposition, because they are actually foils in many ways. Purely from the perspective of how the music sounds, Taylor Swift is like the face of accessible pop music that is the opposite of the hate to love progression people famously go through to become Bladee fans I think the previous point is connected to this, but even if not this is an even more important contrast. Please seriously look at the lyrics of these artists songs before disregarding this, I'm actually v familiar with Taylor's work. Both of these artists def make music that young people emotionally resonate with and find cathartic. But the narrative about the self is exactly opposite Taylor Swift makes songs that make people feel empowered, they almost exclusively (provide a counterexample if you can find one bc I couldn't) promote abdicating responsibility and blaming dissatisfaction on another person, and she generally focuses greatly on the individual and the self as a primary unit in life w/ great emphasis on it's experiences + preferences. Bladee's music is all about removing the primacy of the self + the individual, recognizing how you are ultimately responsible for your own dissatisfaction with life even when wronged, and generally promoting humility. I think flexing & finessing demonstrates this interesting dynamic where bladee is able to humble himself by ironically boasting, because humility is the ideal espoused in his music. I think in sound, themes, and in the overall phenomenology of music - Taylor Swift is relatively unchallenging spiritual junk food and Bladee is challenging both to our ideas of what songs should sound like + how we should conceive of and prioritize ourselves. Also less related but you saying his religious references are random is a demonstration your grasp on this isn't as good as you think it is and the video concepts are suffering for it. Bladee's spiritual ideas are robust + really cohesive, they are esoteric but they are there. I'm not saying you have to understand them, but you're selling him short in your videos bc you prolly don't have the time necessary when you're reviewing so much other music too.

I know this a joke but I need to get this off me:
- length of album like 10% of all artists are like Taylor Swift
- wait you said the soundscape is the same?
- man, Kenny Segal produced so many Billy Woods songs... Billy Woods is like Taylor Swift!
- ah yes, artists that express their struggle... basically Taylor Swift
