  • This is a 2 hour edited version of a 7 hour discussion Buckminster Fuller had with Werner Erhard. In this discussion Buckminster Fuller explains 'experiential mathematics'. Bucky has coined this way of thinking "Synergetics".

From experience of copying out by hand about 600 pages of Synergetics Vol 1 (an action undertaken to slow down the intake of something i felt to be vitally important in its difference to anything quantative that i had been exposed to) i can say that this form of maths - which i now refer to as Fullermath - has an extraordinary transformative effect on psyche. It restores access to intuition as a familiar reliance where one had felt damaged. In particular the subjects of both philosophy and theoretical aspects of physics which were of interest to me but opaque and endlessly abstract and which drew forth from me words without proper conviction - more hope! - now were provided with the sounding board of this new and fairly well assimilated rational system. It provided steadiness and allowed me to peer into these matters quite comfortably.
Besides this Fullermath stimulates invention and one thing i discovered in1996 was that the Vector Equilibrium could be modelled by syncopating beer mats across its twelve vertices. A party trick! But in 2013/4 i found that this form could be extended in series and constitutes a new formal principle for construction. I am confident that it will have vital application both in the marine and in Space. It is a digital volumetric form of engineering to give three dimensions to the two-dimensioned pixel idea.
I would have loved to show it to Fuller.
There is a curious phenomenon in encountering Synergetics - it is half a dull engineering manual and half something of elfin character that is ecstatically alive.

why do you think buckys ideas are much overlooked these days? ive read critical path and operating manual for space-ship earth they really opened my mind and helped at least partially to pull me out of a depression i was suffering largely caused by restrictive thought patterns that ultimately 'boxed' me in to a small mental and indeed emotional and physical space. is it conspiratorial to think that his ideas are deliberately obscured or rather is it simply that people just haven't gotten it? could this be remedied? again, i've only scratched the surface of his works but it felt to me there were seeds within which could bear much practical fruit. would you recommend tackling Synergetics and just how difficult was that endeavour?

i mean it helped with my depression but there was also a frustration afterwards that there were so few people, none in my personal peer group, who had any idea what i was referring to and so i ended up somewhat 'boxed' in again though now with a little more insight into the world.

seumas Broderick can wholeheartedly relate. It boggles my mind how this man and his work are still relatively unknown.... saddens me more than a little

Fuller often blurred the line between science and aesthetics but did it in a way that was still professional. He knew how to place the subjective and the objective.

I took a 7 hour discussion by Buckminster Fuller and Werner Erhard and edited it to just under 2 hours. In this discussion Bucky explains 'experiential mathematics' which he has coined "Synergetics". Synergetics is not just a more effective mathematical approach, but an entirely different way of thinking.

I think this guy got a glimpse of how the universe works.

I call this system of construction ‘’Khatmatrix’’ - khat drawing on an old Indo-European root (sat- cet-) denoting intelligence as the structures can make a variety of responses to environmental dynamisms.
