Rival Schools was one of the fighting games that defined my childhood. So many countless hours playing that game with my brothers. I remember unlocking all the endings, characters and learning to play with every single character. The only other fighting games to ever compel me to do something like that was Soul Calibur 1-3. Had no idea that Akira was coming to SFV since I have sort of lost interest in that game as few of the characters appeal to me but knowing that Capcom is starting to show some love for this dead series will for sure have me buying that dlc character

One minor nitpick: Sakura Kasugano was also in the arcade game. :) She may have been a time-release character, but she was there, I used to annihilate tons of competition with my annoying Sakura/Hinata combo. :D
Hinata and Sakura were definitely my favorite combo when I was playing in arcades and at home. Sakura is my go-to whenever she's in a fighting game really.
Well, I got so fucking lucky to get my hands on the japanese version of the game growing up. And I'll tell you this: me and my friends played THE HELL out of that Dating Sim. And yes, we played it in japanese. The thing about it is you got to fight often in it, while choosing the power and moves that you character would have. So it was like a roulette for us, which sucked, but it was such an interesting concept that it thralled us in. I think it would have been fucking awesome to have this translated, and I can't believe we were the only ones that was hooked up by it. The amazing thing about Rival Schools is that its a concept that would work flawlessly nowdays and yet it is buried in our hearts. Such good stuff!
The PocketStation was HEAVILY covered in PSM during the late 90s, especially because Final Fantasy 8 was to use it as a side quest for a baby Chocobo you would raise to adulthood and use as a summon, I think. Obviously this was left out of the American version but you were still given the baby Chocobo, just no way to raise it unless you imported a PocketStation (at least in the PS1 release of the game).
Some of the music from it is pretty damn good, too. The Rooftop theme is awesome, sounds like something depicting a small town, like the one I live in. The Gorin Gym and Taiyou classroom themes from the original were beyond great.

Hey guys I still own Rival Schools and I want to say that this game rival schools is our very first "my hero academia" before my hero academia ever exist now. We had it good in '97
I gotta admit. I didn't know Rival Schools was a thing until Project X Zone. But after that and your Top 20 Capcom Characters for THAT MvC game, i have gotten curious about the game franchise and DO want to see something. i was born in the late 90s so i couldn't even properly play one of these games until it hit that era of nothing. But now, my only hopes are either a remake, another sequel, or even an appearance in a crossover game again. Heck, i would even love the idea of someone from the game (Mainly Akira if i'm honest) be in Smash Bros. i haven't even played this game, but it looked really interesting even before this video, thanks to you. So i hope it can be introduced to a whole new gen of gamers in some shape or form as well.
Sorry to be dramatic but this made me tear up a bit. Rival Schools came into my life at one of the craziest/saddest times of my life when I was a kid and I randomly came across this game demoing inside of a Software Etc in the mall... Changed my whole life! Its so cool you decided to do this. Also, Strider is now Street Fighter universe thanks to Zeku, right?
The ending point of this video is actually something I didn't even realize when I saw her debut and the poll results. They did add, and adding new, Final Fight characters in SF universe each time! That slipped my mind during this! Rival Schools has a high chance of old characters coming in and being like Sakura where they out of the high school phase and in the university/college phase and that would be SICK to see that happen! this the kind of stuff I LOVE! SNK does this with KOF and it feels so goooooood tbh and seeing this happening here does make me interested in SF6 now
Fun fact: The letter “V” in Japan is pronounced with a “B” sound, making “Vatsu” literally the same name as “Batsu.” It’s sort of a joke name for translators as, in the Japanese version, Vatsu doesn’t even have a name. 😂
Rival Schools is the most stunning and iconic fighting game franchise to feature school students fighting each other in my opinion. The sad thing is, this is the one and only fighting game series to feature students and schools rivaling each other and there’s not an exact single clone inspired by or is similar to this under-appreciated gem. Actually I’ve been imagining if there was ever another fighting game inspired by rival schools and it has similar aesthetics to the series, wouldn’t that be cool!?
I've never played any of these games, but I wanna play them on the Switch. I would be more interested to play those than yet another updated version of Street Fighter II.
I played some Rival Schools in the arcade but the series never really grabbed me until Project Justice came out. That one saw heavy rotation in my Dreamcast, along with MvC2 and Shenmue.
Rival Schools was a dream game of mine too, and how the idea was executed was far better than what I had hoped. I still have my copy of the US PS release, though if I were to tell a friend to buy a copy I would advise them to at least get the evolution disc if it was a choice between one or the other. The franchise deserved so much better than what they got. I would at least advise an HD remake of the first game if not just merging all the games somehow as one continuous story. Heck, they already have a script, just refine it a little and animate the cutscenes. Also in the case of the original game, the gameplay really does make the game despite how outdated the graphics are. Hell I bought the Kanzuki Beach stage because Tiffany and Hinta were in the background, I didn't care if they were swimsuits they could've been fully dressed for all I care, I just wanted to see them again.
Capcom also did another fighting game with branching stories depending on how you play. Tech Romancer. We should also have that back too. Every story path played out like a Saturday Morning or after school anime show. Fantastic presentation and a mech for every kind of mech or cyber type fan. Great IP's that Capcom just abandons because they go easy mode and just keep using Street Fighter, using a name to make the big money. Cuz yeah, Capcom has a problem understanding how nostalgia and a versatile portfolio works.
Tech Romancer was amazing, the fact they wrote entirely different genre's of plot based on which character you played as, then fit each other character into a role in that story? Bloody brilliant. Heck, two different pilots on the same mech? Completely different tone of story. (It was the gundam expy, where one was a very ZZ Gundam style romp and the other a Zeta Gundam style tragedy.) From classic super robot show plots to a serious war drama with an ensemble cast for the big stompy military robot that couldn't jump. (With only one crew member surviving to bury the rest in the GOOD ending.) I really wish we could get a modern take on that game.
@@Sorain1 A character for just about every anime mech type. More standard Gundam story you had Dixon, but yeah the other back and forth swapping one was like some of the others. They even covered the not entirely mech ones like alien body type anime like ultra man, and even had a junk bot in there. There was just so many things well done with it and it deserves to be on a fighting game collection. We'll just about never see a sequel out of Capcom for something that was so different, content packed, and over all just brilliantly well done and told in stories for such a presentation to come together, but would be great to have it again in some form.
I love Rival Schools, I hope Akira in SFV will push Rival schools into the spotlight. I know RS3 would be wishful thinking but I'll even just take them as a mainstay SF guest character. As long as Capcom acknowledges my favorite franchise

I like this new series, I have never played rival schools unfortunately unless you count batsu in the Tasunaku Vs capcom game.... I love the character designs of rival schools. This video gave me some insight in the rich and diverse roster and god I wish for a new rival schools game now. I hope this series does well like build the roster!
Hi, would you do a Nintendo vs Sega fighting game featuring multiple franchises from both series (I.e.: Mario, Sonic, Legend of Zelda, Phantasy Star, Metroid, Bayonetta, Fire Emblem, Persona, StarFox, Super Monkey Ball, Punch Out, Space Channel 5, Kirby and Virtual Fighter plus more.) These what I like the mechanics to be: -It would be 3v3 and it would be a more combo type style fighting game with combos. -Each character would have two allies each for three assist moves each ally. E.g. Mario's allies would be Peach and Toad while Sonic's allies would be Blaze and Silver. -It would be a king of fighters style game in which you could only play as your second character if your first one gets KOed, so choose wisely.
One of the best retrospective videos of Rival Schools. The only that was missed in the video is Street Fighter Online: Mouse Generation crossover game where Batsu and Akira made a return. This is why I really wish Batsu would also be part of SFV these two characters are awesome.
This game is amazing! I remember when I got it for the PS1 all the kids on my block used to come over and play for hours! Project Justice for the dreamcast was even better imo. I still have both games in great condition! Rare gems 💎
I loved this game growing up, fans have been dying for a remake but we all know that’s never gonna happen. To many people own different parts of the game like sounds, music, and characters
I don't get why Boman gets praised as complex for having religious quirk but Roy gets called problematic for being racist and learning to NOT be racist.
I just started watching his videos and he does always the same shit with "problematic" stuff which ends up being the most milquetoast nonthingburger ever. Like this or characters in Fatal Fury telling Blue Mary women shouldn't fight. And it's always done in a way which doesn't show those characters in a good light.
I loved you video, thanks for that. Btw some of those girls appeared in the Beach stage of SF5 even before Akira was confirmed, so I guess they were canon since then. Check that stage out.
I like 'problematic' characters simply bc art SHOULD offend ppl on some level. Gets ppl talking. Also, multiveres are AWESOME and sexy is a good thing. I love me my sexy waifus. Sexy them up.
Roy's whole thing makes more sense when you remember Japan is an almost entirely homogenous nation that has spent much of its history closed off from the rest of the world. Racism from what I understand is culturally understood as an "outsider" issue, not a systemic one. Great Ace Attorney is an example of how people interact with the subject there.
Watching this right before Street Fighter 6 comes out, an I hope characters from Rival Schools are in the World Tour Mode, and the do the dating sim again...

Lmfao Batsu learned how to throw a fireball from getting into too many fights on the street
45:01-45:17 Doubt they’ll see this but,
HEY SUPERBOT STUDIOS AND SKULLGIRLS DEVELOPERS, THEY'RE SOME NEW BLOOD IN CAPCOM'S FIGHTING GAME DEVISION, SO NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO PITCH YOUR IDEAS FOR RIVAL SCHOOLS 3 AND DARKSTALKERS 4!!!
Like this to bump it!
The latter is still around, but the former closed down years ago.
Tbh, at this point, Akira coming to SFV and if she does well, might be the light in the darkness this game needs.
"It's like if they made a Persona game where the characters are in a fighting game"
So it's Persona 4.
Well if only the characters fought without using their personas.
@@aegisreflector1239 so then, Persona 4 Arena.
they use their personas in p4a. that's like one of the main reasons the game's so unique.
@@SuuBrainrot I replied to the wrong person, my bad.
Hear me out: SF6 DLC - Roy: Senator of California
I love this game but the Sequel is Even Better. "Project Justice" is awesome
Some of the music from it is pretty damn good, too. The Rooftop theme is awesome, sounds like something depicting a small town, like the one I live in.
The Gorin Gym and Taiyou classroom themes from the original were beyond great.
I wish capcom would do a remaster version for project Justice..
@@okami9484 If I had the cash, I finance a Rival Schools combo pack...Call it the Back to School Pack. With all the mini-games and other modes, the Honor Student Package.
@@genericnamehere7602 the mini games for character creation was the best.. makes me want to buy a dreamcast and spend the money on Ebay to buy the game again..
@@okami9484 Same Here. I have been waiting for years
No joke, I desperately wanted the dating sim translated. 😅 I remember emulating this in my teens and not knowing wth it was saying but kept trying to see if you could date Hayato and Nagare! 😂🤣😅 *SIGH* Being an extremely shy, closeted gay teen sucked. 😂 My straight friends got to date and fool around and here I was trying to get pixelated boyfriends. It was the best I could do at the time I guess. 😅
I’m so happy that there’s a following for this game, this is my absolute favorite fighting game ever
CAPCOM FIGHTER COLLECTION 2 WILL BRING PROJECT JUSTICE TO PC IN 2025!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for an awesome retrospective. Love this franchise
Project Justice is back! Hell yeah!
Hey guys I still own Rival Schools and I want to say that this game rival schools is our very first "my hero academia" before my hero academia ever exist now. We had it good in '97
The way I've heard Morals Committee described is sort of like a prefect. Basically a glorified hall monitor.
Well at least Akira was announced for SFV. That's pretty hype.
Can you make a build a roster for Jump Force?
Rewatching this video after the recent announcement of Project Justice in the new Capcom Fighting Collection 2. How are you feeling now, Aaron? :)
Correct as Strider is the future. Zeku is the first Strider... unofficially. And I teared up with the Akira reveal.
SNK does this with KOF and it feels so goooooood tbh and seeing this happening here does make me interested in SF6 now
Batsu always reminded me of vegeta
Capcom and Nintendo: why emulation is important personified.
Fun fact: The letter “V” in Japan is pronounced with a “B” sound, making “Vatsu” literally the same name as “Batsu.” It’s sort of a joke name for translators as, in the Japanese version, Vatsu doesn’t even have a name. 😂
This game was so Underrated it b nice if they did a remake I played the hell out the game
Who else is because of the Capcom fighting collection 2 with project Justice in it.
46:51 That won't be a problem anymore.
Thank you for this!
Played the Rival Schools "2" on ps1, and that darn swimming character always cracks me up.
* Rival Schools + Evolution
* Destrega
* Ehrgeiz
* Bushido Blade 2
Classic Fighting Gems that needs a comeback
This is a request for a Build the Roster:
The Fire Emblem fighting game. I'd like to see your take on a roster for this franchise.
I'm really miss Rival Schools. I really hope Capcom delivers on returning many of their franchises successfully the next decade.
Udon will also be putting out a short comic series explaining what Akira has been up to before she comes out.
and there was a rival school comic, but it lasted 2 issues and it was unfinished
Udon comics aren't tied to the games. Not canon.
@@TrollAppears2nd The new one will be canon, it was stated by Capcom.
@@Ciretwo Let me reiterate, AMERICAN comics aren't canon to the Japanese FG.
Yo you gotta do a video about Tobal no.1 and no.2
Rival Schools was a dream game of mine too, and how the idea was executed was far better than what I had hoped.
Star gladiator was amazing. loved that game
That intro music really takes me back, that anime opening was so sick.
I'm so glad you made this video, Rival Schools was my favorite back then and I love looking back to it. I lived in Asia so I got to play Rival Schools 2 also, and I remember playing it non stop with my friends the PS1 Era of videogames were magical I swear.
You're telling me we missed out on a fighting game dating sim? TWICE!? God that sounds so up my alley
I miss Rival Schools and Project Justice so much 😭😓
I used to main Kyosuke, Sakura or Edge. I really miss this game bruh.
This game was so crazy and unique that the original soundtrack includes Taiyo High's school hymn!
I actually remember reading about the school life story mode in a magazine preview for the Japanese version and then being disappointed when the U.S. version came out and it had been cut. Still very fun and one of my favorite fighting games on the PS1.
30:45 the closest thing to this that Ik of was when you could unlock characters in Smash Bros Brawl through the Subspace Emissary story mode
i feel like if this had a modern sequel they should definitely put jimmy hopkins from bully in as a guest charater.
Considering how stingy Rockstar and Take Two are with anything that isn't GTA Online, that's about as likely as getting a new Darkstalkers game.
Or alternatively, the chances of Bully getting a sequel might be tough, likely because of well, ya know what I mean.
This game brings back good memories. When I was younger and taking time off of school because I was unwell this is all I'd play
LOVED this game, so many hours raging at my cousins in the ps1 version. I still have the original copy of the game AND the japanese version of the second game ^^
A new Rival Schools or a re-release of Project Justice with rollback netcode would be awesome. Almost impossible, but awesome.
Anyone remember waaay back when in JR high and u could go to the capcom site and check out the game pages for all their games. Cool art, character bios, ect. Man I miss those days
Hi, would you do a Nintendo vs Sega fighting game featuring multiple franchises from both series (I.e.: Mario, Sonic, Legend of Zelda, Phantasy Star, Metroid, Bayonetta, Fire Emblem, Persona, StarFox, Super Monkey Ball, Punch Out, Space Channel 5, Kirby and Virtual Fighter plus more.)
These what I like the mechanics to be:
-It would be 3v3 and it would be a more combo type style fighting game with combos.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Rival Schools is a great series that definitely deserves to be revived.
We’re out of the woods
We’re out of the dark
We’re out of the niiight
Step into the sun
Step into the LIIIIGHT!!! - Me after Nintendo’s latest Direct.
This game is amazing! I remember when I got it for the PS1 all the kids on my block used to come over and play for hours! Project Justice for the dreamcast was even better imo. I still have both games in great condition! Rare gems 💎
Here cause of the new Capcom Fighting game collection 2
The fact as of today this video is outdated as we see Rival Schools coming back into the spotlight
YO THANK YOU FOR DOING A VIDEO ON THIS HONEST TO GOD, just like you said this game connected to me more bc of the settings, the story and gameplay and especially the characters! I found this gem while looking for fighting games for the ps1 emulator and since throughout freshman year to senior year I've played this game and got people hooked into this game to point we had tournaments for fun no b.s all for fun, thanx for bringing back a great memory!!!
We finally have a rerelease now with Project Justice being in Capcom fighting collection 2.
They advertised the Creation Character in the US and Jerked us.
Yeah jerk move even if we couldn't get the dating-sim we could've gotten at least the character creation mode.
You know surprises me about Rival Schools the most?
That this franchise never got an anime adaptation.
I mean if Power Stone can get an anime adaptation,
why not this?
Video is not even out yet and i can tell im going to enjoy this!
The Only Thing Rival Schools Lacked: Was Its Own “Main Stream” Manga Comic Story or an Animated Anime Series.
The cd2 of the Japanese version IS the reason why i fell in love with this game.
Rival schools one of the best fighting games ever made, BRING IT BACK CAPCOM. Awesome video
Amazing video nice to see, you feel the same way I do.
One of my absolute FAVORITES back in the day! Edge was always my go-to choice 🗡🔪
Man I'm dying for powerstone 3!
Guess who's coming back next year...
