Use a matte laquer and you won't need to use steel wool. Also, for the tips, some wet/dry 400 grit sandpaper, (dry) and rub down the tips and some of the tines to recreate rubs and fighting scraps. Use the sandpaper before the lacquer.
Great demonstration and how to make the tine tips natural white is to use a small flap disc 120grit with dremel to bring out the natural color antler.
