Thank you for your help!!!! Because of you, I was able to replace 10 sills and all the associated brick molds. I used PVC and cut all of the miters with a plastic miter box. Oh, I bought a cheap ($29) oscillating saw for removing the sills and tho it was inexpensive, it did the job just fine, even after hitting a couple of nails.
Thanks for actually using sill material and nose. All the videos online just show people using whatever, 1x6, cedar, pine, and cut it into place. Windowsill is much better and easier.
one thing i would definitely add is primer and paint (before installation) on any fresh cut hidden surfaces especially on the bottom of the vertical, 22 degree piece, seen at the 7:30 second mark. after a few years, even if calked properly, the calk will break away, and it WILL wick up water like a sponge, especially on vertical pieces, - starting the fungus/rotting process all over again..
Thanks for the tips Chris. Ive got a big project coming up & im gonna have to fix a bunch of window sills at a house i bought. This was very informative!!
You made it seem easy for the DIY-ers. Thank you very much Chris for sharing your skills and knowledge. I know I will take 4 times, if not 10 times the length of time you took.. lol.
Well, he's not showing what it did to the interior trim, when he bashed the stool up and out. That'd beat the hell out of the interior trim. His demolition is rough, mighty rough.
Awesome video. Very instructive and I'm going to use this as a guide when I replace my brick molds and sills. I would have liked to have seen the inside of the window when you pryed the upper part of the sill away. It appears that you pries upward. Looking at my windows (which are a nearly identical design) the interior part of the sill looks to slide inward laterally instead of upward/downward. I guess I'll cross that bridge and figure it out when I come to it. Again thank you for such an excellent a d instuctive video. I will be watching and liking more of your videos.
This was a very very helpful video, I've watched a few of your videos and I've found them to be very easy DIYs to accomplish... or you just make it look easy, nonetheless thank you.
Matt, Great show. Got in at the end and knew you wouldn't see my comment so just watched to the end. Lindsay walking by at the end was funny. Surprised she didn’t hold the kids up going by. Lindsay, Matt is right, dont go to Ireland. Bad juju over there for you…. just kidding. Great place and the kids woiuld love it so wait a couple years.
Here in Australia our window sills are made of a hardwood, I'm just replacing few that are over 80 yrs old ,by looks of the timber he's cutting out looks like pine or something very soft beside been rotten.
Noisy music is interference. No wrap, no flashing tape, no sealing/priming/painting of board ends especially. Those are reasons for so much rot before, and likely to happen again soon, after some rains. Otherwise, an interesting and instructive video.
Not to find fault, but I noticed you did not add sealer to the lower brick moulding,to stop water from wicking up and rotting.I learned this the hard way, I paint the bottom.
I just watched your video linked from another one and loved it! Easy to follow, I'm going to try it out! Also, I just realized youre in Raleigh!! I'm in raleigh too! I would love to learn more!
Great video. Do you simply use place a finish nail into the front of the nose piece to hold both the sill and nose? ie: do not place any nails or screws into the top of the new sill.
Chris, When you removed the original piece, there was insulation that you pulled out. l'm watching you set in the replacement wood but you did show new insulation being done.
You should glue, epoxy, or use construction adhesive on the outer part to seal up that gap so it can't get wet or that repair won't last 5 years. Even calk would be better.
I'm impressed how smooth you work thank you for the video, What you call the wood you used on the sill and how long does it take you the project , I'm starting a handyman business would love to know the time frame
Sad but true. I actually liked a lot of his work other than the fact that he doesn’t have anything to wipe his finger on to draw a clean caulking line and he didn’t end prime any of the wood so to your point yes that shit will rot out faster than the original slower growth timber.
I've used PVC. I think its great for preventing future rot. I've encountered a few windows that have had PVC on them for a quite a few years and they seem to be lasting great.
Triangle cut is nice trick. But all 6 sides of that brick mold needs to be primed or you are leaving it open to rot again. Or use PVC - which has it’s own issues. Also, clearly you are handy and accurate cutting freehand with a saw on the ground or truckbed because you use one every day. For mortals, get a hand miter saw or get / rent a powered miter saw. It will make those precise angled cuts WAY easier.
Gotta be honest...did NOT think you were goona get anything done...BUT i was wrong. Nice job! Only question..what kind of trim is that that covers the sill at 6:26?
Matthew G Thank you. On the inside there is an apron and a stool. I think I called the apron a curtain in the video. The board going into the sill is called a sill nose.
I was wondering the same thing... He also cut through the shitty water barrier on the sill and didn't repair it. I guess its job security. That said, he did get in and out of the job real quick.
@@ChrisSilverman can you find thinner sills. The pocket windows we bought were measured to be a 1/2 smaller but for a few windows Lowe’s decided to make it a 1/4 shorter basically leaving little room to fit the window.
Hey Chris just saw your video. Nice job. Quick question, can you cut out the inside window sill the same way you did the outer one and are the replacement parts the same. I have termite damage on my inner sill. Thanks brother.
Damn, you make this looks so easy! I'm avoiding tackling a large window in my house. But you've given me some added courage. Thanks.
An artist you are! I love to watch a skilled man lend his talents when his heart is. You bring a the confidence out of pure strangers.INCREDIBLE!

Nothing like aluminium frames but this movie is about rotten wood and definitely you are more than a carpenter.
You are a professional work-of-arts!
Thank you. Watched so many others and was still lost. You r clear and concise. Thank you.

One of the original carpenters ... clever problem solving, good dexterity, didactic talent, great video,. Thanks!
A few critical items were missed nonetheless.
Useful information for a DIY guy in the UK thanks for posting.
Nice job! I liked your "V" shaped cut and just used that technique myself last weekend
Best video yet. very detailed. thank you
Great video. Wished you live in Florida as it is hard to find a skilled carpenter. Trying to convince my husband we can do this!
OMG CHRIS........YOU ARE CRACKING ME UP! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO, YOU MAKE IT LOOK EASY!

This is super helpful, thank you!!!
This was super educational. Thanks for such an informative presentation.
Great video...by the way the piece of trim under the sile is called the apron.

Thank you for covering all the details. I think I can do it now!
Great video! I couldn't stop watching you 😀 Before and after at the end would of been the closing deal. 🏠🏠🏠 I subscribed!

I was wondering about that too. When he put the brick moulding in at the bottom I was like, "No sealant?? Nothing??"
Great video, thanks for posting!

Great learning video .thanks Chris
Sailendra K Thanks for Watching! 😁
Chris invest in a Fein Tool. I don’t know how I’ve done 30 years without one.

New Sub
Thanks man!
The board below the inside STOOL, or ledge, is called the APRON.....
That new wood he put in will rot faster than the original did!
Sad but true. I actually liked a lot of his work other than the fact that he doesn’t have anything to wipe his finger on to draw a clean caulking line and he didn’t end prime any of the wood so to your point yes that shit will rot out faster than the original slower growth timber.

Excellent video...Thanks man.
.nice work with good info
Good Job Chris
Great job! You seem like you love helping.
Thanks for the great video.
Yes , it never fails I cut the 45 degrees wrong with a miter box ( buy extra ) so true be careful with 40-50 year old window frames
Enjoyed watching thanks
Great video! Have you ever used PVC window sills? I was wondering what your take is on using this material?
I've used PVC. I think its great for preventing future rot. I've encountered a few windows that have had PVC on them for a quite a few years and they seem to be lasting great.
Thank you, Chris! Yum yum yum. Pizza Pie baby!!

Good job guy!
Do you start your day 5 or 6 Red Bulls? Lol😆 lots of energy. Nice work
Thank you very good instructional video. I need a nail gun lol
Awesome video, will follow same technique.
Caulking and paint make a carpenter what he ain’t
excellent! Thanks for sharing your expertise
Great job. Well done. Bravo
Good job man!!
I just get a kick out of your easy going personality !!

It was fun to watch dude!
I like your video and my house have the bricks molding
Are those material sold out everywhere? Can't seem to find it at home depot
Excellent video!
What’s this stuff called at the big box stores? Not having much luck with “window sill” or sill nose
hi! how much does it cost in materials to replace a window sill a 48 inches? I don’t want to replace a window, is it possible to do it on your own?
You should do the same video with a house that has replacement vinyl windows
Paul Bee I’ll keep this in mind and next time I replace a vinyl I’ll for sure video the process
@@ChrisSilverman I would definitely want to see that .
bless your heart
It looks EASY; I can do it!
...and I did...and it looks great; thanks to you!
Thank you for the video very helpful
You didn't want to prime/paint the bottom of the new sill?
I was wondering the same thing... He also cut through the shitty water barrier on the sill and didn't repair it. I guess its job security. That said, he did get in and out of the job real quick.
Isn't it PVC?
Great job
Great job
Great video. If you plan on replacement windows will the supplier remove the sills? Without sills are the windows larger in size?
In most cases the sills will stay in place with new window installs. The new window usually sits on top of it.
@@ChrisSilverman can you find thinner sills. The pocket windows we bought were measured to be a 1/2 smaller but for a few windows Lowe’s decided to make it a 1/4 shorter basically leaving little room to fit the window.
Awesome video, thank you
hartleyktm Thank you!
Very helpful, thank you!
What kind of sealant did you use at the top, for the brick moulding?
I used acrylic caulking
Great job! Love it!
This brings me to my next point, Kids don’t smoke crack!
Haha, 🤣
i appreciate you bro!
really enjoyed
Really good work
I’m up in Richmond va...you travel? I need 6 sills replaced from rot.
Great job.
John Hall thanks John!
Hey Chris just saw your video. Nice job. Quick question, can you cut out the inside window sill the same way you did the outer one and are the replacement parts the same. I have termite damage on my inner sill. Thanks brother.
where can I find the 2 piece sill boards thanks
You can find them at Home Depot or Lowe’s home improvement
1 It's an apron not a curtain. 2 The angle of the sill is 15° not 22°
Great job. Thank you for making and posting this video. (Wish I could hire you). God[Bible] Bless.
Excellent! Thanks!!!
Great video
could you have just replaced tge nose on that sill? i just use the pvc sill nose from lowes. works great and alot less work.
You can for sure replace just the nose piece. I have found that sometimes the nose pieces are hard to separate from the sill from it being glued on.
You remind me of Korg the rock guy from Thor Ragnorak
Not 22 degrees ! Cut a sample piece to dry fit ; 14 degrees or so .
Get a little caulk between the two sill pieces .
