  • We're trying our hand at upgrading a headboard in one of our bedrooms. It's a novel approach, and it ... almost? ... works. We're looking forward to your feedback! Plus, it's time to get figgy with it....

Sara, an IT professional & Stephen a graphic designer and artist are world-traveling Canadians who dreamt of moving to Europe, and France in particular. In 2020 they were working from home when Stephen turned to Sara and popped the question she was longing to hear, “What would have to be true for us to buy a chateau in France?” They searched online for months viewing hundreds of properties. They narrowed their search and toured some properties when they happened upon the one that captured our hearts, Château de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A year later they made the move to France to start their new adventure in our beautiful Château. They created “Manor and Maker” to reflect the two sides of their adventure. One, to live as chateau owners with all the ups and downs and two, to pursue their passions as makers, creating art in all its forms. They will invite others to come together, united by their passions, to share in this adventure. We invite you to join us too, as we bring our dreams to life. Welcome to Manor & Maker.

At La Lande, Michael Petherick worked on something with Stephani (long time ago), he showed her to use a gold wax thing...in a little jar...he rubbed his finger in it to get just a bit and then he rubbed lightly around the edges of the applique to give just the slightest definition. Took the project to a whole new level.

Google BBC food for quince recipes. My mother used to stew quinces with sugar and a little water (peeled and cored) until ruby red before serving as sweets or freezing them for later. Quince paste is hugely popular too for serving with cheeses.
Also we have a very popular burnt fig jam available in Australia. Maggie Beer is a famous Australian cook. Just google Maggie Beer recipes and search burnt fig jam. It’s created by cooking figs with sugar until slightly burnt and caramelised, then adding a little lemon juice to taste. I love it! Enjoy!

I'm afraid the headboard project isnt working as an upgrade. Sorry guys! Perhaps you could deconstruct a couple of large (dark wood) armoires...to create a surround/bedcrown combo, from which lovely fabric could hang.
The brass leg fittings are lovely, but the "country blue" paint, the small scale flat embellishments, and the modern white fabric are all out of place.

Yep.Afraid it is still a very rectangular pair of baby blue doors with shiny synthetic fabric inserts and flat fake embellishments. The tiny artworks at the side could be hung above the lamps and below the top of the doors. Maybe no headboard for now until you find something graceful and curvy as a better match for the repro boulle furniture. Sorry guys! You are so sweet but…

Sara and Steve I hope you feel much better soon. It was nice of you to post a video even though not at top form.
You’re doing a great job and I’m not going to add additional suggestions as you’ve received plenty.
Steve your cutouts are very nice. It’s great to have tools that allow this intricate design work. I can imagine in ages gone by people doing carving by hand and how long it was to produce such beautiful work that’s detailed on the side tables and commodes that were of the period.

I think the headboard needs to be mounted with a frieze about 10 inches wide with more serpentine appliques like what's on the chests, and a peaked pediment with a keyhole center cut out at the apex. The effect would be more Neoclassical, but with Rococco elements tying it to the chests. I believe the brasses are incompatible with the laser cut appliques, because the appliques are flat and not carved in relief like the brasses. It might make sense to gild the appliques and add linework detail in a thinly painted manor to coordinate more with the brasses, if you must have both on the piece.

  • @rosalindhambleton9012

Bonjour mes amis. I sure would add a touch of gold to those appliqués, for sure. The gold would give them a more glam look. (my taste of course). They would fit better with the little side desks (again my idea) A château needs some glam LOL. Well done, it looks really good will be so interested to see the final product. Quinces make absolutely beautiful jelly! Conserve, jam, just stewed and frozen to be used off season to make divine Quince shortcake, Chutney is good too! One of my favourite fruits, very old fashioned and doesn't get the recognition it deserves. They're as hard as concrete, can't be eaten raw, and are a bit tart if not sweetened enough. But they're the most gorgeous pink when cooked, just peel, core and treat them like apples basically, except they take a bit longer to cook. And love the fig jam! Your headboard is very nice, but needs a bit of gold on the cutouts to tie them in more with those gorgeous side tables.

Fig jam and quince jelly, aaah, my all time favourites from childhood. Sadly , birds eat or damage all our figs, even with netting spread over the tree 😢. We'll try again this summer tho. Quince trees are fairly rare these days in NZ, owing to codlin moth which plagued all the trees planted by earlier generations and the comparatively long cooking time. However. New moth resistant varieties are now available, so we may be lucky and come across some. Quince jelly develops the most exquisite jewel toned colour during cooking so the jars of jelly placed on a windowsill with the light coming through them are stunningly decorative. Mmm, my mouth is watering thinking about these treats! ❤

Here in Switzerland, quince is often made into jam. I've also seen recipes for quince-glazed lamb, quince butter (like apple butter), compote, etc - just google, and I'm sure you'll find dozens of recipes to inspire you! When canning, just remember to wipe off the rim of your jars before sealing - it prevents mould growing on the residue around the lip of the jar.

Quince are super high in pectin but can also have grainy flesh and are rock hard and therefore difficult to deseed and core. For that reason I usually make quince jelly with them (recipes abound in preserving books and on youtube). Not only is it fragrant and absolutely delicious, it turns an amazing deep pink colour on being cooked. There is also the Spanish wonderment known as membrillo and, again, recipes abound online. I've never been successful making it but the last massive batch I attempted (too dark, too gloopy and too sticky - like something to glue rocket parts together, but delicious) I froze and now use as my secret ingredient each Christmas when I make David Lebovitz's mince meat. But I digress. There are those who do not mind the sometimes grainy texture of the flesh and will put slices of one quince into an apple pie or crisp for that blushing colour and amazing scent. They really do have a wonderful perfume. When I have quince I like to keep them in a big wooden bowl in the middle of the dining table for a while because I like their resemblance to a golden autumn moon, and because they perfume the air whenever I walk by. After years of getting masses of quince from a friend on Salt Spring Island I am now bereft as she's moved back to mainland BC. I have planted my own little quince which currently has 3 baby quince on it. I will not get a decent crop till I'm about 93, but I'll wait that long because they are worth it. You are lucky ducks!

When you re-visit for the next phase, you might fill the old hardware holes, add a little gilding to the scrollwork, and use gold rope trim around the padded panels. I have an idea for quince, besides making original marmelade (which was made of quince, not oranges) - save/freeze some to up the pectin in other preserves, like peach or berry or even grape.

Keep the gold trim but get the edges of the cut outs with faded/burnished brassy looking gold to complement the 2 brass ornaments

@@ManorandMaker The bling is fine for now. I just thought that once you do gilding, the bling will be too modern and maybe the wrong color. I like less-traditional details and your fabrics really well.

Really like your choices for the bedhead you colberate so well together. Sarah I feel you were keen on the blue chosen and your colour knowledge has been picked up from Steve without you realising it. Quince Jelly can be made, don't have a recipe, just google it and make some Figs In Brandy, very easy and delicious with vanilla ice-cream, yum, they also make an excellent gift with or instead of a bottle of wine. Love It!

Headboard looking good but I think the pale fabric doesn’t do it any favours - if you’re putting a canopy and curtains up wouid look nice to have that fabric in the headboard also ! Jist a thought !
    The jam sounds delish ❤

I made fig jam with some dried figs. Used fresh squeezed orange juice and lots of orange zest. I'll definitely add candied ginger next time.
Agree with all those that suggested burnished gold.

I would suggest antiquing all of the headboard and taking out the white fabric and putting more padding on it so it poofs out slightly 0:01 and a more luxurious fabric, possibly a velvet or William morris fabric would be lovely. You could also distress and add gilding to the edging and trim.

I simply love the creativity you both have and how your skills meld together, resulting in fabulous creations. I do agree with some who say to give the appliques some dimension, because they are so pretty. I can't wait to see the final product. Everytime I see or hear of fig treats I think of fig newtons and start craving them, on the grocery list they go. LOL Have an awesome rest of the week.

Yes in Spain they make a Quince jelly called Monbrillo. It is quite stiff so you can cut in slices. Lovely in an apple pie!

Very creative headboard diy! Love the addition of the brass piece in the centre. With all the work creating the scrolls id be tempted to match the goldish brass color to make them pop . It must be so wonderful to walk out into your yard and grab fresh figs ! Yum and the jam ...how devine. Some french cheeses and fig jam on crackers, a lovely festive christmas appetizer lovely.

In Catalonia its traditional to make Gelea de Codony, which is like a set jelly with the quinces (codonyat). Its thick so you can slice it, It is usually eaten with cheese. Its really yum! you should try it!

In Australia we have a famous cook who brings out a line of gourmet foods and one of her most popular things is quince paste. Made specifically for cheese boards. It’s delicious with a mature bitey cheese like aged cheddar. Her name is Maggie Beer.

Try baking your quinces, recipes on line, with cinnamon, honey, cloves, orange and lemon etc. It's my favourite thing in the world to eat and smells amazing while it's cooking. They have a tang still but you can adjust the sugar and honey to suit. I add a bit more liquid as the syrup really makes it.

Quince jelly - roughly chop fruit dont peel & include seeds & all. Then boil for about 3 hours till fruit is soft then strain through muslin overnight next day add about equal amount of sugar & juice of a lemon & cook until it thickens to a beautiful pink jelly. Jar it up & you will have quince jelly
