Greetings from Scotland! Most of your remarks also apply to my country. However one difference regarding racking are in-roof systems. I use the GSE in roof-system that means the panels are flush with the roof tiles. It took a crew of three people 2 days (60 man hours) to install 28 panels acrosss two roof planes. So I don’t know how long a racking system takes compared to this. The main concern in Australia I guess will relate to panel temperature, and there certainly is less air circulation under the panels with in roof systems. However GSE also includes a ducted ventilation option that addresses this (includes options to duct heated air back to atmosphere, or into your house via a heat pump). I think I roof panels look very smart compared to on roof options. It’s worth a look.
Just as I, for lack of a better source of information, I was drawing diagrams and designing a solar power system which would help me to understand the essentials, I found you on the You-Tube. I have ordered your book from Amazon, and will continue to watch your postings on the You Tube. I have much to ask you and will be in contact soon. Finn Peacock, you are irreplaceable. Hello Solarquotes, I have just finished watching your solar 101 and it is very good, thank you very much. One thing that was not mentioned was roof loading due to application of solar panels on the roof. Do you have a rule of thumb you use for roof loading? How many pounds per square foot or how many kilos per square meter would you recommend a roof be certified to in order to adequately support solar panels? Thank you for any input you may have. I'm just looking for an estimate so I can plan my roof structure before I go any further. Cheers, John L. in Fairlawn, Virginia, USA
Hi Finn, congratulations! You did a excellent job explaining everything about solar energy in Australia at 2021. I used to work in a kind of solar energy company in Brazil. There are a lot of differences between both countries, but it is a subject that I'd like to understand more. Therefore, if you sell or recommend any course or something like that about the technical process of installation of panels/inverters, I'd love to know.

Short answer: most people with a reasonable FiT and reasonable self-consumption will be better off with more panels - even if they are export limited. An 8kW inverter, 13 kW of panels and a 5 kW export limit is a common configuration. Remember that 6.6 kW pf panels will not max out a 5 kW inverter very often. In the morning and late afternoon, in winter, and on overcast days, your panels will be producing much less than 5 kW. Also - every extra kilowatt you add is cheaper per kW than the first few kilowatts (thanks to the rebate being per-panel - and the installers already being on your roof). So if you add more panels, you'll get more energy more often for both self-consumption and exports. I'm working on adding export limiting to the calculator soon so you can quantify the extra savings vs extra spend.
Great information Finn. Thank you. One thing that is driving me mad is grid voltages. Due to many solar installations locally, my grid voltage can get as high as 258V, meaning the inverter shuts down. I expect this is one of the reasons why the SA gov put in the big red button. But even on days it doesnt hit the cut off, my 5.5kW system will be bouncing around, beneath 4kW, which is a massive loss on my feed in. Will make my 6 year pay off blow out by a few years I expect.
@@SolarQuotes Had a couple of people look into it. There is nothing they can really do about the grid voltage though. Once the grid hits 256V the inverters stops. But before that it throttles.
Hi Finn, thanks for your great videos. What is your general opinion about Sungrow inverters, and what makes an inverter better. expl: What makes Fronius better than Sungrow ?
IMHO Sungrow are the best budget inverter around. And now they are compatible with Solar Analytics without requiring SA hardware, it’s hard to justify paying extra for Fronius + Fronius Smart Meter.
