Just purchased mine with the 7.5khz concentric ring. Paid $350 + tax on xmas eve. Thanks for the great tutorial. My first detector. Will look for the 18.75khz coil.

I bought the dual coil pack. It has both the 9 inch concentric and this gold DD coil, all in one box. First off, the 705 is just a more complex, more feature packed version than the 505. If you have problems working the 505, the 705 is going to be a nightmare. Next, the amount of available info on these machines is nearly nothing. Even on RUclips, there is very little out there. I've owned this machine for 2 years, used both coils and even bought a NEL tornado for it. The ground here in Germany is trashy everywhere. No matter what coil I used, the machine would go into spasms, because of so many targets going on at the same time. After 2 years, I just found out that this machine has a hidden stability program. By holding down the coin/prospector button for about 3-5 seconds, a little + sign will appear in the upper left of the screen. This helped a lot for the spasms. Helped smooth out the spasms and let the coil track better in the trashy multiple ground that is mostly all over Germany because of two world wars. And it's not only high iron from bombs and tanks shells, it's also gold and silver, especially silver, and copper and bronze etc, from the bomb rubble. When the cities got laid waste, all that rubble had to go somewhere. In many cases they hauled it out of the big cities and spread it over the ground out in the woods. Its not uncommon to be out in the middle of a forest, many miles/kilometers from a city, and be finding silver pocket watch cases and wedding rings, and silver spoons and forks etc. Coins going back as far as the 1500's is extremely common. But mixed in with it is bomb fragments and mortars shrapnel and on and on. I bought the 705 based on a review like this. It can be a good machine in ground like this, but you better be on your A game. I've used White's machines in the gold fields of California for decades. I thought I was on my A game. Minelab in general, is a whole different monster. And unfortunately there is little available info out there. Does that mean its not a capable machine? No. In reality most machines in the same price brackets are going to perform with about the same level. I also own the Garrett AT Pro International machine with just the standard DD coil. The 705 and the Garrett AT Pro, specifically the Pro, not the Max and certainly not the Gold, they are about evenly matched.
Now depending on what it is that you are looking for, and you really need to get damned specific here, depends on what coil you use, what program you're running, and in reality, what machine you should buy. The AT Pro is so much simpler to use, and I'm not missing any more targets with it, than with the Minelab 705. But a serious dose of reality, that gold pack DD coil is made specifically for finding up to the tiniest piece of "wild gold" in the gold fields. It is not a good match up for coin shooting. The frequency is too high. It's made for tiny targets of gold, in deep earth. Even in coin and relic mode, its not a good match up for the city park. Your better off getting a NELs coil or one of the other large aftermarket coils, in a mid range frequency for just coin shooting. And if that's really all you're going to do with it, there are better, less frustrating machines available on the market for about the same price tag. But if you do get the 705, splurge the extra $20 for the control cover, because God help you if that box gets even a little moisture in it. It's done. game over. Again, if you're just gonna be out coin shooting and maybe some relic hunting around old home sites, go with the Garrett AT Pro. You'll be a happy detectorist.
Now where this machine really shines, especially with this gold coil, is in the gold fields. Out in the desert in the washes. Heavy mineralized ground etc. Because of the multiple frequencies (which is dependent on which coil you attach to the box) you'll be able to find those little nuggets. But for you beginners out there, looking to get into this hobby, when they say it has 3 available frequencies, it does. Depending on what coil you plug in. If the coil is a 3khz, that's what you get to the ground. 9.5khz, same thing. 18.75khz again, it all depends on what coil you plug in. And having a higher Khz coil, doesnt mean your going to go deeper. They all have their own purposes. And you need to pick your machine, and your coils, based on what you plan to use it for. And another thing I've found, different machines, seem to pick out different metals with a higher level of accuracy. Minelabs are insanely good for finding brass and bronze and silver, with the 9" CC coil but not so good at finding gold made into something. Like a ring or watch etc. The gold frequency in the machine is too close to the foil and aluminum discrimination. If you go coin shooting in the park with a 705, expect to dig a lot of pull tabs to get anything in the gold range. If you want coins however, silver and clad is up in the low to mid 40's, quite a long ways from the aluminum numbers. But if you want to find a gold nugget in the desert, under 10 inches of heavy mineralized arroyo sand, this is your machine, and pay close attention to the videos of the guys using it for prospecting. While the machine can be used for coin shooting, that's just not it's high point area. And this is coming from someone that owns the machine, with several different coils, with a lot of experience with metal detectors, and I own several other machines as well. The other place that the 705 does well is at a sandy beach at the ocean. The high salt content in the sand, even the dry sand, can make other machines melt down. The 705 does good at the beach. But an extra $100 gets you an equinox series machine that will run circles around the 705, in that environment. So you really need to ask yourself what you plan to do with it first, then choose your machine and your coil, very carefully!! Unless you're independently wealthy, and it doesnt matter how much you pay for a machine. But for the majority of us, an investment into a machine is a high ticket item. Especially if you're just getting into this hobby. Choose poorly, and you'll get frustrated as hell, sell your equipment at a terrible loss and walk away from it, when with a machine and coil matched to what you want to find, it could have been the best thing since puberty.
One more thing, about the hologram sticker on the side of it. It has nothing to do with the company finding out whether you opened the control box or not. If you did open the box, all you're gonna find is a bunch of circuit boards in there. There's nothing magical hiding in the box. That hologram sticker is because in the world of metal detectors, there are a tremendous amount of cloned machines for sale out there. Most are coming from the old soviet bloc countries and from China. And they will make it look just like the original, but it won't work like the original, and if you've had a problem, it won't be covered under a warranty. So only buy from a reputable dealer, and register your machine as soon as you get it. Just to make sure a clone didn't slip through the cracks. Here in Europe where I live now, you'll find a lot more clones on the market, but ebay is worldwide, be careful of who you buy it from!! Italy for instance, is more expensive on just about anything you buy, except metal detecting equipment. Hmm.... I wonder why that is... Oh!! It's because they are next door to some of those old Soviet bloc countries! Be careful and buy from a reputable dealer. If you have further questions about choosing the right machine, there are RUclipsrs out there like The Hoover Boys and Aquachigger and nuggetnoggin. and others doing all kinds of detecting. Find one that is doing what you want to do, and then find out what equipment they are using. Aquachigger for instance, will answer just about any question you can come up with. He's been doing all kinds of detecting for decades and owns more than 20 different machines. So match your machine to what you plan to look for and then go have some fun out there. Get a good shovel too!!! Bob in Germany

Thanks for the info. Been working desert washes found a asteroid in the desert here in tucson. Also use a falcon pointer to tap a few rocks and work some cracks. Plugging away here in az. Weather is nice looking for nuggets. Just need to put my machine over some.
