    Nobody ever made a better montage of rock, classical music, and pop combined into an intro that left you in no doubt you were going to listen to a broadcast by someone who loved music of all genres with a passion. RIP Fluff, music radio is a lesser place without you.

    Definitely one of the best DJ's I've ever heard on British radio. He could get away with playing a 2 minute intro, because he was that brilliant.

      @@TheTim59 Unlike today's "trend" for filling the airwaves with TV presenters. I suppose though it's just things going in reverse, as "back in the day" several DJs moved from radio to television, but the other fact was many of them knew/appreciated the music. Nowadays, I doubt whether the likes of Amanda Holden, Rylan or Claudia Winkleman care a jot about what they're playing....a lot of which (particularly on the commercial stations) is part of a loop of the same old tracks..

    On the opening night of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1972
    (I was 15) my friend and I just happened to be at Cambridge Circus in London.
    We hadn't a clue what was going on but anybody who was anybody turned up,most of them in very early Rolls Royce's.
    I recognised Alan Freeman and went up to him.He enquired "All right mate".
    We walked along together when we came across a hot dog/hamburger stall and Alan ,who had two companions announced
    "I'm feeling peckish " .
    He bought three hamburgers but one of his companions wanted a hot dog.Alan looked at me and said, "Do you wat a hamburger mate" he then looked at my friend and said "I bet your mate would like one too" and proceeded to by my friend a hamburger as well.
    I've never forgotten how nice he was to us.I'm 64 now and remember it as if it was yesterday.
    RIP Allan Freeman, you were a real nice man.

    • @britishcomposers
      @britishcomposers 4 года назад +1

      @Phil Tobin Well actually, Radio 1 on certain programmes like the Sunday evening charts and this one here, plus a few others besides, used to jump onto BBC Radio 2's VHF (FM) frequency for the hi-fi stereo sound reproduction that such shows deserved (instead of the Medium Wave lo-fi sound).

    • @arthurvasey
      @arthurvasey 3 года назад +1

      britishcomposers Should have been in FM stereo from the get-go - what kind of fucked-up logic decrees that a station playing all the latest hits, plus programmes of specialist music like rock and soul, should be relegated to a poor quality, appalling and abysmal medium wave AM distribution service that, according to Johnny Beerling, the programme controller at the time in The DJ’s Handbook by Roy Sheppard, “doesn’t do justice to today’s music!”,

    Greetings, music lovers! Totally agree with Rock Ape. Early 80s, my late teens, TV and Fluff were absolutely essential listening. On my local radio station, Essex Radio, we also had Paul Lee aka The Hairy Eyeball (CB radio was big in those days) who really rocked it too. Nowadays, Johnnie Walker does his best on Radio 2, but he'll never be TV on the Radio.

I also recall Tommy Vance sitting in for Fluff a couple of times because the great man was ill. TV said " Fluff's in bed with the flu and big man i know you're listening and i will do my best". At the end of Fluff's sublime intro he said "I love that intro". Great radio days.

I remember the first show I listened to, Fluff said he was going to play Wishbone Ash and some vintage Zeppelin from the 1969 archives. He used to play Genesis too sometimes.
