This is the best video and step-by-step instructions on how to make a BCT. For my niece 2nd bday, the bakery we order from ruined her cake and couldn't make it on time and only offered a refund. Thanks to your video I was able to make her the Curious George cake she wanted. Thanks sooo much for posting!!!!
This is an awesome idea. I'm a cake decorator, and I have never thought to do this, but, wow, it would make things soooo much easier sometimes. I really like that you did it in buttercream, not royal icing, or fondant, just an awesome idea, maybe you could even do smaller ones, for cupcakes.
Tips to help make your work go smoother: #1 to create a more professional look try using a small tip to outline your topper, #2 let it set in the fridge before correcting any mistakes, #3 use a slightly wet brush when going over the areas you have piped it will help you make your project look more cohesive (the same way), #4 when filling in the areas try going for a thinner blob to spread out (this will also help if you want something thinner than what is in the video) doing so will help you make sure you didn't miss any spots you wish to have filled in. then if you want a thicker topper use a thicker blob of frosting, #5 if you want a flatter back to your work let it set up ( harden) to the point where it is in between no longer runny/easily manipulated but also isn't so hard that it will crack when light to medium pressure is used on you project. Once at that stage you will want to use wax paper (or what ever type of surface you piped it on) and lay it on the bottom side ( the part you lay on the cake ) of your topper then gently with your finger or a rolling pin go over it be carefully not to press it so hard that your work starts to spread out, and lastly #6 you may want to use a few days of frosting to adhere your topper to the cake ( or what ever you are placing it on)
Enough with the negative comments, just watch the dang video and be educated, geesh. You do good work, dont let the devils steal your joy with that negative bull crap.
Very helpful sist... :) i want to ask too, after finished like that, if the buttercream put on the top of basic cake, how to create the full decoration?
Alyssa Roundtree Yup I agree! In New Zealand, frosting isn't even a word anyone really uses. All icing/frosting/whatever on cookies, cakes, cupcakes, you name it, is called icing here.
I make my own butter cream icing, it's supper easy to make. For a two-layer 8- or 9-inch round cake,* you'll need: 3/4 cup butter 2 pounds sifted powdered sugar (about 8 cups) 1/3 cup milk 2 teaspoons vanilla Milk Food coloring (optional) *Halve the recipe to frost the top of a 13x9x2-inch cake Prep your ingredients Soften the butter by bringing it to room temperature. Soft butter will ensure that it easily blends with the other ingredients, giving you a smooth frosting. Meanwhile, sift the powdered sugar. -Note: Never used melted butter when a recipe calls for softened butter. The frosting will not mix properly and the texture will thin out and act as more of a glaze than a thick, luscious frosting. Step 3: Cream together ingredients In a large mixing bowl beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Gradually add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, beating well. Slowly beat in 1/3 cup milk and the vanilla. Gradually beat in the remaining powdered sugar. Step 4: Beat frosting to spreadable consistency If the frosting is too thick, beat in additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until you reach a thick but spreadable consistency. Make sure the milk is fully incorporated before adding the next teaspoon: Just a teaspoon or two is sometimes all you need to go from too stiff to the perfect texture. If your frosting gets a bit too soft, put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes or stir in 1/4 to 1/2 cup more powdered sugar to firm it up. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring or flavorings
Thank you for the recipe. And for your brave efforts on the video. Hang in there one day you'll get the presentation polished. If you hadn't posted this I would know nothing, thanks again, some people have no idea how difficult it can be to learn how to do videos
Hannah Smith I have not seen butter sold in sticks in nearly 30 years. All I can find is a one pound block. I live in a small town in South Western Ontario. The butter I used to buy was sold as four sticks in a one pound box similar to the box that lard/shortening is sold in today. Each stick was equal to one half cup. My question is; How many sticks of butter do you get in a package today?......or, Does your recipe use 1 cup of butter? Most buttercream recipes call for shortening or a combination of shortening and butter. This recipe sounds delicious. I have never really liked the idea of eating shortening and have tried to make it with butter. Mine never came out fluffy like yours because I didn't have a proper recipe. I am pretty sure that not adding the milk was my problem. Thank-you so much Hannah for posting this recipe. I can't wait to try it. Vicki
Welcome, Vicki. But Mine never comes out fluffy either.. I learned though.. You might want to keep mixing it for quite longer if it's not the right , forgot what it is called.. Well the butter can come in 6 sticks in a small box(Rectangular) 5, 4, 3, 2, and just one. I'm in Anchorage, Alaska so, ya, I guess.

So cute!
awesome! i have a question, when this sits out does the icing soften and look like it was piped directly onto the cake?
But how do I get it onto the cake without ruining it?
Did you use crusting Buttercream ?? Came out great !
I make my own butter cream icing, it's supper easy to make. For a two-layer 8- or 9-inch round cake,* you'll need:

To make buttercream frosting: 3 Cups Of Powdered Sugar, 2 Sticks Of Softened Butter, 3 Tablespoons Of Milk, And 1 1/2 Teaspoons Of Vanilla Extract
