    If you watch the Storytellers performance of Iieee you'll hear the story of the Indian boy. They went from town to town & everyone was always dead & then he sang that iieee part to her.

    When this track is taken in the context of the whole album, especially with the 2 songs that come right after it’s the bargaining stage of grief.

    here's what Tori said before performing it on Vh1's Storytellers back in 1998...
    "Some of you know that we like really good wine. So, I wasn't quite sure if um, the things I was seeing was from that, or if they were really happening. And uh, it was a strange time, I had just uh, I had a bad pregnancy and I lost the baby. And I started having this vision of this little Pueblo boy everywhere I went. And we knew it wasn't a little boy, so... I really didn't know who he was. And uh, the wine really wasn't that good, you know what I mean? So um, I would close my eyes when he would appear and I would follow him and he would say things like, Come, rabbit, come on. And I would go. And we had this 1959 convertible and he was a Zuni boy, Zuni or Pueblo boy. And he would sit in the back with his arms like that [spread out] and we would drive for hours and hours and hours. And I would sit there and we didn't know where we were going, but when we would get there, nobody would be alive. So um, it was a strange thing, it was like being in, I don't know, a bad Dustin Hoffman killer virus movie, you know. And I didn't know what we were supposed to do, so we would leave the town and uh, he would tell me to build a campfire. Um, and I'm an arsonist so I, I really like that bit. So I would build this thing and um, he would start dancing. And um, he would say, you know, "We failed today but we have to go to the next town tomorrow." And this happened over and over and over again. And we were always too late. Um, and he would sing this thing in my head. And he would go, he would pat me on the head and he'd say, "It's okay... iieee, iieee, iieee..." [VH1 Storytellers - October 24, 1998]

    Wow nice reaction. I've met and hung out with Tori whenever she came to Australia years ago back then she didn't disappoint at all. Even played Caught a Lite Sneeze for me. Check out that song from RAINN concert 1997

    The piano bridge included in this live version is not includeded on the studio version. If you notice at about 7:55 mark, right when she holds the big note at the end, she sings: "if you understand then tell me why-i-i-i-e-e-e-e?" in this incredibly painful and raw cry of grief, so in a sense the song is really called Why? but instead of being so on the nose she instead gets the title by spelling out the sound itself and - like you said - questioning god and asking him to why anyone deserves this much loss in his divine masterplan. Probably my favourite Tori song of all time.

    The song is about her misscarige, that's why she's singing "you took my little girl" and "I thought you'd understand" talking to god.

    She actually had several, but i believe this was after her forget one, i believe i read in an interview that she was 6 months along when she lost the baby, so it was very hard on her. Her daughter is basically a miracle baby, as she had more miscarriages before she was born. So, yes, this one is about her first miscarriage.

    Trying too hard to sound like Kate Bush.

    • @almandragoran
      @almandragoran 4 месяца назад +8

      That’s odd, since there’s really nothing in Kate Bush’s work that sounds like From the Choirgirl Hotel. And Kate did not invent “girl at the piano”.

      @@almandragoran THIS song gave me instant Kate Bush vibes. That's all. I'm not comparing their entire catalogue nor am I talking about anything else Tori did or whether she plays the piano in this performance.

      @@CirTap So, you saying she is "trying too hard to sound like Kate Bush" is not an utter insult to this incredible performer? Please, dude.

      They're like 5 years apart... no reason to pit female artists against one another anyway..

    • @almandragoran
      @almandragoran 4 месяца назад +6

      @@CirTap Like, what Kate Bush song does this remind you off? Because I’m a huge Kate Bush fan and I can’t think of any Kate Bush era that sounds like this. The only thing I can think of is that it’s a woman singing a dramatic and structurally inventive song. But it doesn’t SOUND like any particular Kate Bush track. And surely not every female artist doing alternative, somewhat dramatic pop is “trying to sound like Kate Bush”.
