The first ending is hardcore. I never knew that kind of death would happen if you don't equip the pendant to koudelka. I always equipped her with it because if gave good stats. It highly increases INT iirc.
The first ending was brutal in my eyes. But Koudelka and the Shadow Hearts series were suddenly forgotten; I really hope those games get more recognition, because blending survival horror and RPG combat is a very interesting feat.
I only just found out within the last week that a spiritual successor to the series is being made, Pennlyblood: ruclips.net/video/rzi3WGzr_yY/видео.html Absolutely stoked to see it come out.
I think that unfortunately, parasite eve took that place from it as the horror rpg of the ps1, mainly because it was a story in modern time instead of past time. Yet parasite eve 2 and 3 were terrible games and storywise underwhelming while shadow heart was great.
I remember buying Koudelka just because it seemed kinda quirky. I ended up loving it and playing it through, but when I got to the end, I was so irritated when Elaine killed me, only to have the "bad" ending happen. Who would have thought that you're SUPPOSED to lose in the final battle to get the correct ending. It was a while after that when I picked up Shadow Hearts, not realising any links between the games, and being completely surprised when Koudelka showed up in it!
Played this at release when I was like, 9 years old or something, and never got anything but the first ending. I didn't even know that was an ending, I just assumed I was doing something wrong and resigned myself to being stuck there forever.
+Emanuele Utzeri I was a little confused for a minute because I consider the Bad Ending to be the Game Over ending and your Bad Ending as the Normal Ending. EDIT: I don't read descriptions often.
After watching the recent interview video of Machida, I simply cannot see the "bad ending" not being canonical. It would cancel out the rest of Yuri's story if it wasn't. And this is like saying the SH-SHC games never happened, and all the feels attached to them aren't real either. Those are feels I'm not willing to let go at all. And besides that, the "good ending" of Koudelka is one of the saddest one ever (even if James is a religious zealot), and leaves too many doors open (while closing the most important one: Shadow Hearts).
I think the Bad Ending is really canonical, but the good ending leaves so many questions in the open that could be a different perspective. Imagine that after the Good Ending, James try to use again the Ritual and begins the SH loop...
I agree, and I'd like to add that it's a much more powerful, and meaningful, ending than the "good" ending. Despite late 90's/early 2k's voice acting, you can tell he is scared yet resigned with his fate. He would rather die knowing he tried to save Elaine's image than fail.
Fuck the "losing" ending being canonical. Let's say Edward and Koudelka bang afterward anyway and James goes back to the Vatican, mission accomplished.
I didn't know English when I played this game, so I was incredibly unaware of what you had to do to skip the bad ending. I was never able to continue because I didn't have (or didn't equip, cannot remember) the pendant and it was always game over to me haha
+mikigirl18 For me it's the complete opposite. I played Koudelka when it got released in the 90s and played all the SH series last year for the 1st time, just becuase someone told me that Koudelka is a sequel to SH1.
The pendant is lost at the beginning of the introduction screen and can be obtained later in the game. It's not a missable, but can be looked over. You do need it to trigger the final boss or else it's just a game over screen.
The first ending is hardcore. I never knew that kind of death would happen if you don't equip the pendant to koudelka. I always equipped her with it because if gave good stats. It highly increases INT iirc.
indeed me too, stats are good
You just need to have it into the inventory.
Reminds me of that on scene in Indiana Jones . .
What James says in the good ending to himself is just so dark yet profound.

@@maxentirunos bruh parasite eve 2 was good and third birthday was something..
Let's see what happens with Penny blood.
Raiders of the lost ark: nothing will top the german soldiers looking at the ark.
Koudelka: drop our pendant.

Love that first ending. so.. fast and so deadly.
I actually threw away that pendant in my first try, I couldn't believe the game let the player throw away a key item like that.
Me too! Fuck that haha And I didn't even know. It was so frustrating to always die to a cut scene and don't know what to do haha
This game was so underrated.
Jfc that's the most gruesome no holds barred ending I've seen. Also the first time where the "Bad ending" is way the fuck better than the good ending.
Whats funny is that the bad ending is the canon ending
子どもの頃すんごい頑張ってエンディング全部見たな…。クーデルカ好きすぎてシャドウハーツも遊んだ。
Played this at release when I was like, 9 years old or something, and never got anything but the first ending. I didn't even know that was an ending, I just assumed I was doing something wrong and resigned myself to being stuck there forever.
Maybe you accidentally discard that pendant away
Oh lord I feel bad that you had to see that ending at 9 years old
I came to see the gameplay just to see why I couldn't pass the same part
The Good ending smells... Insted, the Bad Ending is the Best. It's romantic.
+Emanuele Utzeri I was a little confused for a minute because I consider the Bad Ending to be the Game Over ending and your Bad Ending as the Normal Ending.
EDIT: I don't read descriptions often.
(The lose ending) is the canon ending since the priest grave is appeared in shadow hearts.
@@akbarrmd7714 I felt the same way even thou I've never played Shadow Hearts.
@@akbarrmd7714 And in that ending, she fell pregnant with her son and he is an important character in the Shadow Hearts series.
@@KittyKatt_Luna80s nope thats different, yuri isn't related blood with koudelka and edward its just different story with same problem book of the dead

So, are you saying instead of Roger Bacon/Albert Simon being the enemy in SH, James would be the one facing Yuri and crew? Seems not that plausible.
The Bad ending is the canonical one. You can even see James' grave in Shadow Hearts, meaning he died at the place.
I agree, and I'd like to add that it's a much more powerful, and meaningful, ending than the "good" ending. Despite late 90's/early 2k's voice acting, you can tell he is scared yet resigned with his fate. He would rather die knowing he tried to save Elaine's image than fail.
Sir Laughsalot besides... the final boss is way too hard to beat xD
I think the Bad Ending... is the True Ending... who knows when you lost to your final boss... you get this ending...
It is the canon ending yes. It sets up the background for the events of Shadowhearts, the game's sequal.
Damn, they got Indiana Jones'd pretty hard in the first ending.
Sorry Silent Hilll 2, but Koudelka was the first horror game to have a protagonist named James who pines after his lost lover.
Fuck the "losing" ending being canonical. Let's say Edward and Koudelka bang afterward anyway and James goes back to the Vatican, mission accomplished.
Headcanon. I love it. 👍
No. You find his grave in Shadow Hearts. Also he deserves to die. He redeems himself that way.
I didn't know English when I played this game, so I was incredibly unaware of what you had to do to skip the bad ending. I was never able to continue because I didn't have (or didn't equip, cannot remember) the pendant and it was always game over to me haha
0:39 - damn, now I see this is one helluva M-rated game...
So in what is considered the "Bad Ending", if that is considered the canonical ending, was that one sexual encounter give the conception of Halley?
+mikigirl18 Yeah, Edward is Halley's father. I already noticed when I first saw Halley's sprite in game that he looked a lot like Edward.
I noticed that too the moment I saw Edward. I played Shadow Hearts long before knowing about this game.
+mikigirl18 For me it's the complete opposite. I played Koudelka when it got released in the 90s and played all the SH series last year for the 1st time, just becuase someone told me that Koudelka is a sequel to SH1.
Koudelka is actually the predecessor to Shadow Hearts :)
So where can you find the pendant ?
5:00 I wonder if the track "Dead Fingers Talk" off of From The New World is a reference to this line?
Thanks a lot, finally I saw the third ending. When I played this game, I just saw the bad one and the good one.
for me the "bad ending" is a "normal ending" (best in my opinion)
So, wait. If you lose the pendant by some means, are you just screwed?
The pendant is lost at the beginning of the introduction screen and can be obtained later in the game. It's not a missable, but can be looked over. You do need it to trigger the final boss or else it's just a game over screen.
Funny thing you can throw it 🤣this guy's were evil
Jacked up endings tho
Holy crap! 1st endings awesome O_o
Can we please get a remake and sequel to this game
Hmmm... so the ending where you lose to her in the fight is actually the best ending. Very interesting.
i got the good ending thanks to the save state, but damn, i should not loaded, the bad ending is better than the good ending.
How do you lose the pendant ?
You can discard it AFAIK.
I did no know about the no pendant ending apearently i got lucky and i had it equiped haha
Bad ending best lol
Dead people don't speak...
