Video Number 100 !!!! How to make a Patchwork Square with a Half Double Crochet
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- Hey Crafters,
Can you believe today's video is my 100th?? Wow !!
So let's make a patchwork square:
Chain 15
Row 1: Make a half double crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. (13 half double crochets)
[ Chain 2 and turn.
Row 2: Work a HDC in each stitch from the previous row (13 hdc) ]
Rows 3 to 9: [ Repeat ]
Cut yarn and fasten off.
Now make 700 more squares!!!!! lol
Or however many you need to make a blanket in the size you want.
As always, thanks for watching!!

Every Crocheter is guilty of sleepless nights. Crochet keeps you up way past your bedtime.
Always one more row or one more square then I'll go to bed!! lol
This is the first time for me to watch your video .i absolutely loved the authenticity and real feel you have. I am now so very interested in patchwork squares after watching this video . Thanks for your thoughts.
Thank you so much!
You were right when you said the squares work up really quickly. I've been working up squares in between working on another project. I just started yesterday and I have over 25 squares. But the thought of 700 squares kind of scares me. I'm probably going to make a border around each Square before I sew them together and I may include some solid colors not sure yet. I am using new skeins. I love that kind of yarn and I had bought one skein of many different colors. Thanks for the tutorial.
25 squares already? That's awesome!! I'm sorry that 700 sounds scary, some people really need to know how many they'll need. And I would love to see the squares with a border.
I will get them done. I may even be making a king size blanket. I just sit and make squares without thinking of the number made. I love though that you have planned it out. I know by October I will have them done. I will show you what it looks like with the border. I will be connecting them with the ladder stitch. But that is just the plan. I love the way your blanket came out without the border.
@@jennie-grannysquarepeg
I can't wait to see what yours will look like!!
I also was thinking the same. Making a boarder around each square and throwing solids very randomly.
Arlo should have his own channel. He always steals the show. So much fun to watch him.
Arlo is a very special cat. It makes me happy to know that he brings joy to others!!
I’m new to crochet and have a learning disability. So happy the way you teach. Just found you. Thanks 😊
Welcome Gail. I'm so happy that my video is a help to you.
I used an I hook5.5mm. also made 10 rows made a 4x4 square. I'm so happy with it.
4 x 4 is a good sized square. I'm glad it worked out for you.
I am enjoying being a part of this positive and inspiring group. I continue to crochet squares.
Wonderful! I'm loving the little crochet community that we are building here.
Make a template the size of the square that you want. Measure your square on that template as you work on it. You will have the size you want each time.
Yeah, I already do that. I know I mentioned it in 1 of these videos.
Jennie you are to cute!!!!
I love how you wrinkled your nose just talking about solid color squares!!!
Thank you for this video. Actually showing yourself crocheting the whole square instead of doing 2 rows and then coming back at the end of the 9th.
You actually care about teaching crochet so everyone can follow along to make the project.
I'm looking forward to making squares.
I will be making some for my local library. They are doing a project starting in the middle of the month.
So I'll be making some for them and some for me.
Thank you again Jennie!! ❤❤❤❤
Eileen, you are so kind, thank you. Can I send some squares to you for your library? What kind of project are they doing? Thank you so much for being here, for watching my videos and commenting. You are awesome!!
@@jennie-grannysquarepeg
That would be wonderful!!! They are asking for 4x4 squares that they are going to be hanging up throughout the library in June and then in the fall putting them together to make lap blankets and blankets for nursing homes and veterans.
You have such a gentle kind heart Jennie.
Please send me an e-mail with some contact info. I'm happy to help. My e-mail is grannysquarepeg@gmail.com
Jennie, hello from Calgary, Alberta Canada! Thank you so much for all your efforts in making this video! I made two squares while watching and used a 4.5 mm hook. My squares measure 3 3/4” x 3 3/4” and each used about 5 grams. Only 698 to go!!! It’s like eating an elephant, one bite (square) at a time 😂. Thanks again ❤ Michelle
Hello to you too. Awesome that your square is actually a square!! One square at a time, we can do it!!
I was so intensely watching you, then it happened!!! Arlo's tail took me into orbit!!! So darn funny. I'm still laughing 🤣
He's stealing the show lately!! lol
I make a lot of hats (my own pattern) for homeless and needed something to do with the leftovers of skeins. This will be great - a blanket for the homeless or nursing home. Win-win!
That's wonderful!!
Hi from Ireland I am making granny square blankets but this is such a great idea love it.i have variegated yarn and never know what to do with it now I know.thanks so much love your cat made me smile.great channel .💖💖
Wonderful! Arlo loves hanging out with me and the camera when I'm crocheting!!
It’s on my bucket list to visit Ireland! Sorry for being off subject, lol!!🍀Hows the weather right now? You’re so lucky!!
I have some pretty old tape measures as well, but I do have my moms hem gage (sewing) that she used in high school home economics class she graduated in 1955🎉
That's awesome!!
Thanks to Esther I am now hooked on crocheting king-size bedspreads and such.
Her videos have helped me so much.
Esther was a big help when I was working on Sophie's Universe and the Ubuntu CAL
@@jennie-grannysquarepeg Oh yes, definitely! Same for me. The Ubuntu CAL was what got me hooked on crocheting larger projects. I finished it in under 3 weeks and I made Sophie's Universe even two--and-a-half times.
I came across her channel when I bought the pattern Prism Blanket. That video was so well done. She showed all the tricky parts without giving away the entire pattern.
I love the idea of mixed squares . . . . Looks like, possibly 8ply. . . . just wonder if it's possible to join as you go, with this square.
I think join as you go would work, I have a list of things to try out with my squares and it's on my list
I just started this after seeing your video. I also have a hard time with using basic plain colors. I have an entire stash of variegated yarns. Some new. Some discontinued. This is the perfect prohect for them
Awesome!!
I LOVE your Variegated Square !!!!! Keep up the fun Videos.
Thank you! Will do!
you do nice work; I have been crocheting at the age of 12 i am 72 a good 60 I have made blankets bedspread and curtains I love to crochet you really do beautiful work
Welcome and thank you.
Easier than granny squares!! Want to make lapghans, pet beds, lots of yarn!!
Pretty colors.....good idea for multi colored yarn❤
Thank you! 😊
I just found you today. I like this concept of 1/2 dc squares. I have a bunch of yarn I didn’t know what to do with. Now I know. Thanks for your joyful tutorial. Happy day.
You are so welcome!
I've been doing some squares and can't wait to start
That's awesome!!
Love your cat Arlo. Such a beautiful cat. Arlo seems to have a lot of personality.
I think so too!
Hi! I hope you're doing well and making the most of this winter day. The notebook is nice, but I like the bags even more! They have beautiful yarn, too! Jimmy Beans is on the expensive side, but they are worth it. I find a way to make them fit the budget when they have a nice sale!😃
Thank you so much for sharing, loving the squares. I lost count on sleepless nights because I really wanted to finish my project. Lol! It's all good and worth it. Hi! Arlo! 💕😺💕
Thank you and Arlo says Hi.
Thank you so much for your wonderful video! You are a joy to learn from 😊 Kristin
Thank you so much!
Just found your channel. Enjoyed the video and pattern. No problems with your video. Love your instructions and new project to soon get started on. You do a great job! Thank you for taking the time to show us something different!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for the tutorial, I appreciate it. Have a great day today.😊
You are so welcome!
I've been making HDC squares with my scrap yarn for a while. I think I'll probably make a cardigan with them.
Oh, a cardigan sounds nice!!
Great tutorial, simple yet fun! Thanks for sharing!!
Glad you liked it!
I don’t blame you for tearing out that boring white. I love the beautiful colors of the yarns you’ve been using. They are just so pretty. I prefer either the beautiful self so I think yarns, such as the super saver, stripes, or the solid gray cars. I want made a beautiful, solid white, baby blanket in a sort of blunt stitch that I got from Jada. It was really pretty and for some reason I didn’t get bored with it. I think that was because I could see how pretty the blanket was going to look. I’ve got to have some of that melon berry yarn. It was so nice. I use the super saver stripes a lot because they stay bright and beautiful and the yarn gets really soft after I wash it and dry it with dryer sheets. I do that with all my blankets, and all of my head, and everything else. It works for me.
Solid colors are so boring! Yeah, that Melonberry color is so pretty!!
Hi your channel popped up on my screen and I'm so glad it did. I have so many scrap balls of variegated yarn. Fun project to work on and I can't wait to start it. Thanks

My pleasure 😊
That's going to be one pretty blanket when it done
Thank you
I spin and dye my own wool. I “tie dyed” a lot of yarn (result in a bright variegated yarn), and made crochet granny squares. Beauty is, lots of colours…. no ends to weave in 👍
I did a border in black and joined in black.
It looks a bit like those stained glass crochet designs. (Mock stained glass 🤣).
I have a stained glass blanket in my project pile but I messed up the border and haven't fixed it yet. I love the look of mock stained glass blankets.
Hi Jennie, I’m so happy I just found your channel!! I’m hooked lol. I love those patchwork squares. It’s 3:15am😮 and if I start now I’ll never get to bed 😅. These really seem to work up quickly and if you change yarn frequently you really won’t get board. Thanks again for a great tutorial. This is what I call a relaxing project. ❤gayle
Hello! You're very welcome.
Just discovered this channel and your 100th fantastic project video. Thanks a lot and inspiration for me to complete my project.
Welcome aboard!
Hi Jennie, love the tutorial. Need to finish my spider stitch blanket first before I do a patchwork one. Your blanket looks absolutely gorgeous, I hope you keep it. Enjoy your day 😊
Thank you Carla
Hi Jeanne I've always wanted to try making a collar on a cardi. I simply love landscapes yarn by Lion brand. I don't have that colorway Frenzy so pretty. Pastoral knits by Mary Maxim looks really pretty as well. I really love that tweed yarn too. Thanks Jeanne!

Thank you, I'm glad you're here!!
Hi Jenny. I’ve been making these like crazy. What a blast! But I wanted to mention how my brain works. After the starting chain of 15, your instructions say to half double crochet in the second chain from the hook. I think it’s the third chain - at least that’s how I’m getting my count right. I’ve been crocheting 50 years now and visually I think it’s the third chain from the hook, not counting the one on the hook of course. What do you think?
For some reason I just never count the chain at the hook as a chain, it's weird, I know. That's why I usually tell people to crochet in chain number 13 instead of counting from the hook.
In regards to filming. You need to create a ‘box’/area that the background is all one color, like white. You need lights that allows you to diffuse it on both sides and overhead, so it doesn’t create shadows. This will keep your camera from constantly auto focusing since the background won’t have various things to focus on.
Look at what your camera is. Then go to RUclips and look for -how to use(your camera) for video content for RUclips, plus editing. You should also be able to find lighting/background suggestions/recommendations.
Nothing is harder for a beginner than trying to follow along and are tying to follow someone where the pic is constantly out of focus, poorly lit, and/or has shadows.
Wow and ouch!
Hi ,are you sewing or crocheting your squares together for the blanket ? Did you put a trim around it? I love this idea
lol, keep watching. I crochet them together but with no trim.
New at your channel. Love the turquoise ever soft yarn. What is the color name. The one I found on premier was little different plus label was white and yours is yellow. I'm on a granny square tangent 😅. Your work is right up my alley. Thanks. ❤❤😊😊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The yarn I have is longer made , it was part of a promotion almost 10 years ago. The color is Beach Day. I'm so sorry that I keep using old yarns that are discontinued.
Hello! I found your Channel and I am so happy I did! May i ask what size hook you are using? I'm loving this Patch Work Blanket!❤ and your Beautiful Fur Baby!❤
F / 3.75mm Thank you for being here.
Your spoken pattern said to put 1st HDC in 2nd chain from hook, but you visually put it in the 3rd chain from hook. Personally, if I was doing HDC, I would put it in the 4th chain from hook.
Yeah, I know all about the chains...lol
When I watched the rest of the video (instead of just jumping in!) I saw how you were starting each row and why after the initial chain you you went into the 13th chain! @@jennie-grannysquarepeg
What size hook are u using u never mentioned the hook size
F / 3.5mm
Just love these squares! Can't wait to start them. What is size of hook plse. Thnku
F / 3.75 mm
@@jennie-grannysquarepeg thnku so much 💟
What about using a larger hook? I don't like using small hooks!! It goes faster with larger hooks and bigger yarn. (5-6). Especially making lapghans!
You can use a larger hook, but I'm not because I want a certain look and feel to my blanket. Faster than 7 minutes a square? I'm not a machine, lol!
So good to see you again. The yarn you are using is just beautiful, and it makes a beautiful square. If you added one more row, he would probably have the perfect 3 1/2“ x 3 1/2“ square. I’m definitely going to try this out because the half double crochet stitch is one of my favorites. I sometimes work in the back loop only, and that gives you a nice ridge.
I am looking forward to many more videos on your channel. I enjoy our visit, and I love the work that you do. Hugs and blessings, Sandy from Cincinnati.❤ 17:03
Hey Sandy, good to see you again! I love using the back loop for the ridged texture that it gives.
Hi I’m new to your channel and love it nice and easy . So I try and do three scares in the day cause I’m a new crocher 😊
I won’t even finish a scarf in a day lollll
This channel is really good and I’m enjoying it, I actually just found you! #100
Thank you and welcome to the channel.
I was looking for an email for you and couldn't find one so I am writing here. I don't think you need 700 squares. I placed squares across the bottom of my king size bed and got 18 squares across. Then I took squares and put them to the top of my bed and got 16 high. That is 288 squares. Now those are measurements without them being sewn together. I may be wrong but those are my calculations.
E-mail is grannysquarepeg@gmail.com I did a video before this one showing the math, it was a good video! lol I used very complicated crochet math and girl math...lol I gotta ask? How big are your squares?
@@jennie-grannysquarepeg I did see that video. My squares are a little bigger than yours. They are 4 X 4 1/4 so that shouldn't make much of a difference. I did see your other video where you figured out how many squares were needed. I am going out now but when I get back home I will send you an email showing you my squares and maybe even showing you them across my bed.
@@Crochet_Loving_Leeni you're right my math is off/wrong. I'll fix it and put it into another video. Thank you for breaking the news to me gently, it's very much appreciated.
@@jennie-grannysquarepeg You are very welcome. I was just about to send you how the squares line up on my bed. But since you told me you realized the error, I won't send them to you but send you my finished blanket to look at.
It's so weird, I have a king size bed, and my oldest kid has a full size bed...I never thought to check the measurements from the internet with the beds in my house!!
I love this video. I never thought of doing a patchwork blanket. I am not confident about sewing the squares together. Is it difficult to do?
No, not difficult at all, maybe time consuming. But we'll get to that in a later video.
Four squares and counting.
Awesome!!
Love Wataching

I could watch you for hours, when that cat jumped up it scared me. Do you mix your yarns when making the blanket or do you use the same kind?
Thank you so much! For me that was like the 5th time that he had jumped up, I just cut the other times out of the video. Arlo loves to play with yarn when I play with yarn!! Yes, all the yarns that I'm using are a mix of different companies BUT all of them are a # 4 medium weight.
they all nice
Thank you
Hello question how many squid do you make of each color for your blanket? Thank you have a great day.❤
Hi Kathy, with some very complicated crochet and yarn math...we need a lot of squares! lol
What size hook did you use for this project, please? I just found you channel. Enjoyed this tutorial. ❤
F / 3.75mm
Can I ask Jennie how did you put the squares together.did you see them or crochet them together.thank you 💖💖
I crocheted them together using a single crochet.
😮I used a 3.75 hook and red heart with love. I guess with my tension, I crochet 13 and then 2nd chain from hook did my half double. 11 half double and it measured 3 1/2 inches. Was that okay?
Yeah, that absolutely is okay!!
I just started following you. Great content. Do you block your squares?
Thank you for being here! No, I don't block - at least not individually - I do it after they have been put together, then I wash, then I block.
Are you weaving in ends or are they covered when you connect? I love these squares. I am already working on three other blankets each one with different types of squares, guess I’m working on four now! Thanks for the idea!
You're welcome and I haven't decide yet if I'm weaving them in or crocheting over them. If I'm doing it now or later. I'm making it up as I go along. lol
I would love the box of yarn. Your right solid colors are boring.

Gorgeous, isn't it?
Why a 3.5 hook instead of a standard 5? Just curious, fairly new to crochet.
I need to use a smaller hook because I crochet big and loose but I need these stitches to be small and dense so my blanket will be warm and not full of holes with air flow.
Thank you for saving me! I never realized that if I went down a few hook sizes it would help with loose stitches. Frustration just went down several notches.
@@kimlong2839 you're welcome. I'm happy that your frustration level has gone down.
