Irbe was among those Bettman screwed out of the 98 Olympics to rig the prelims vs teams w/ majority non NHLers. It almost worked until Czechia's Euros kicked his ass.

So awesome to see how much hockey has grown in Latvia. Hopefully Latvia becomes a powerhouse soon and start sending more players to the NHL
I mean, hockey has been the most popular sport in Latvia for some time now, so I'm not sure how much growth there's been, especially considering how their development programs still have their issues when compared to way back when. Either way, still a great story.
In Latvia, it has been 100% all the time. The difference is we don't have billionaire investors and we are only 1.8 million
I would say that hockey has had a regress in Latvia, but it's not only hockey, the whole sports and education system is fucked in Latvia for some time now, no wonder all kids are being sent abroad to play and study, because the level is just so low and the good players can't really progress.

I remember the times when there were only two indoor ice hockey arenas in Latvia - today there are twenty ice hockey arenas in Latvia and by investing in regions and children, we manage to remain among the elite of the world ice hockey since 1997.

This video gives a completely different vibe now that they have gone through many difficult opponents and won the bronze, who would have known that this game vs the Czech Republic is only the beginning of an amazing story.
