Agreed. This movie is awesome, but the ending is so sad. I understand this takes place in the 1800s and they couldn’t cure most illnesses, but Yeller’s death is tragic.

My favorite part is when Yeller saved Arliss from the protective mother bear. Also, in the book, he's suppose to be a Black Mouth Cur, while in the film, he's a Mastador, that means he's a mix between the purebred Labrador Retriever and the English Mastiff. Spike is my most favorite animal actor, he gets different roles in films and television shows, Spike played as King: The She-Creature (1956), Old Yeller: Old Yeller (1957), Patrasche: A Dog of Flanders (1959), Brown: The Westerner (1960) with Brian Keith and Pete: The Silent Call (1961). After his role in "Old Yeller", he appeared on one episode from the 1950's television show, "The Mickey Mouse Club". I love the best doggone dog, FYI, I'm a HUGE fan of Spike.
Joshua Reppert My favorite part was later that night after the bear incident when Travis was laying in bed thinking...probably replaying in his mind what happened that afternoon. Yeller gently opens the door, pokes his head in and smiles at Travis as if to ask “Are we cool now? Can we be friends?” Travis then motions to him to jump into the bed, where they bond. To me that was the “Old Yeller” moment. I also liked all the farm work/herding scenes....the cow and the hogs. It showed the training skills of Frank Weatherwax as well as displaying the abilities of working farm dogs and what they were bred to do.
I love this movie! The end is really sad, but still one of the best movies that Disney ever made. This was when Walt Disney was alive and in charge of his business. He would not recognize it now.

My aunt had a dog that reminded me of Old Yeller, even though the only real similarity was the fur color. Old Yeller was certainly a very beautiful and great dog. I believe his real name was Spike and he passed away in the early 1960s.

Agreed. This movie is a timeless classic. It’s so simple, and yet so entertaining. I watched this countless times as a kid, some of which with my grandma. She was only 11 years old when Old Yeller was released. Sadly, she passed away 10 years ago. Now this movie makes me cry for two reasons: Yeller’s death and now because it makes me think of my grandmother. I miss her every day.
The song got stuck in my head, and I went looking for it on RUclips to get it out of my head! I first saw this movie in 1990, when I was 8 years old, and back then, I absolutely hated it. I was not a dog person back then (being chased down the street by a neighbors' two big dogs when you're six years old will do that to you; and no, we were not doing anything to those dogs, my sister and I were on our way home from the bus stop, and just passed the house where the dogs lived). Then there's the fact that the dog dies (I don't think I was old enough, or mature enough to understand the movie). Though years later, I have grown to really enjoy this movie. However, I've enjoyed the song long before the movie grew on me, due to the fact it was included on a Disney Sing Along Songs VHS tape we had (anyone remember those?)
Thank goodness for Disney+ now! ♥️ All of the classics and everything else you could think of, all together! Finally! I’ve been saying my whole life that they needed something like Disney+! They have Old Yeller on there and I LOVE watching it all the time! One of my favorites♥️♥️♥️
I remember going to this movie when it first came out in chicago. Elegant and lavish theatres made it quite a big deal. I started singing this song and my wife was like, how do you know the theme song. I mean, I saw old yeller like twice about 30 years ago. The human mind is interesting how it stores this kind of Info for long periods of time so I can recall it when in need. Lol
drummer703 Chord progression is not melody, nor the harmonies, nor the note lengths. I'll grant that having the same chord progression can make two different tunes sounds similar; however, it most certainly does not make them the same.
In my neighborhood I learned about a long gone cinema from the 40s that existed. I was told that this movie had played at one point, now when I visit the current site I try and image this movie playing where a dirty parking lot stands now. Makes me a little sad
Just rewatched this the orher day havent seen it since i was probably 4 and it felt like looking back through my younger eyes, idk something about that scene when travis leg was covered in blood and then puts the blood red bandana over it is something that stood out to me as a kid but also something i forgot, kind of a nostalgia thing almost a synesthesia feeling

Top 10 best movies you'll never wanna watch again. We all know why...
Even being born in 1981, I watched this many times as a kid.
I'll bet everything is going to turn out right for that dog. He'll live to a ripe old age.
🥰 still have the movie and paper back book and where the red fern grows! Among others...🥰
(2018) and I still watch and love this movie 🙏
I really enjoyed it the old yeller theme song is really awesome I really like to hear
I started singing this song and my wife was like, how do you know the theme song. I mean, I saw old yeller like twice about 30 years ago. The human mind is interesting how it stores this kind of Info for long periods of time so I can recall it when in need. Lol
I watched this at school I cried
I grow up on this movie
Good. Disney. Movie. O. Yeller. Sad. At. The. End. But. He. Had. A. New. Puppy. Just. Like. Yeller. Awesome.
This reminds me of my good old days 😩
he always knew what to do
Happy 65th Anniversary Old Yeller
Anyone else think that this song has the same tune as "I've got a dream" from Tangled? Makes me wonder if Tangled got there idea from this song
Not really, I'm afraid.
Play them back to back.
drummer703 I did. It's not the same tune.
As chord progression goes, yes they are
drummer703 Chord progression is not melody, nor the harmonies, nor the note lengths.
I'll grant that having the same chord progression can make two different tunes sounds similar; however, it most certainly does not make them the same.
Damn just hearing this brings me back
best fucking dog in the west 🎵🎶🎤
Henry Montoya 😂
I didn't cry during this movie and i didn't cry when I watched Where the Red Fern Grows
Old yeller is sad
But at least they have Young Yeller
lol
In my neighborhood I learned about a long gone cinema from the 40s that existed. I was told that this movie had played at one point, now when I visit the current site I try and image this movie playing where a dirty parking lot stands now. Makes me a little sad
Classic piece of Americana….lot of life lessons in this old movie.
My kids love this song ❤️ so do I
Old yeller was my favorite movie when I was 5
Joel Rosado
The Jungle Book and Winnie The Pooh were my favorites when I was 5
Rip Tommy Kirk!
Although Old Yeller came first he still reminds me of Cujo. 😢
Virginia Clark That’s not hard to understand. Because both dogs were, unfortunately, both affected with rabies. And what’s sad, is that both dogs were both very sweet and caring before they had the disease
