interestingly, though, bernard sumner apparently confirmed the other version, ie that the song is a fictional account of te failed assassination of his wife. as you point out, the details are blurred, but it is a fictional account, and more of a metaphor for failed marriages. that's not to say the domestic violence interpretation is wrong, this kind of thing is always open ended.

Hard to imagine how the song could be about the assassination of JFK which took place in November of 1963, and the lyrics talk about January of 1963.
