Im struggling with this right now. My symtoms have been switching from back pain, which I stopped caring about as much, and now its insomnia and sleep issues which is bugging me. Gotta do my best to just not get angry over it like I have been. I was so frustrated last night even though I knew that response would not help me.
So... I fell asleep while listening last night. This was not the first time your soothing, calm presence has lulled me to sleep! The great thing is I can always go back and watch another time. Thank you for teaching me how to feel safe!
Thanks, Dan for you tidbits on sleep. I never thought about my dread of having a bad night could be a bad visualization. I will certainly try to visualize good memories of sleep. I like your straight talk and that you’re relatable. 👍🏻
I had really bad insomnia after I had Covid. I realize now it was my belief about sleep. Once I stopped overthinking (took a couple months) sleep is natural eventually you will sleep. But the more you try to sleep it feels like a performance and the brain is scanning it like a scared child performing on stage. I still have sleepless night sometimes… it happens . The best way to move past it is to just accept that sometimes it happens
@@PainFreeYou thank you. I normally don’t watch anything on my phone if I wake up like that because of what you mentioned but this video happened to pop in my feed. It’s the fearing that I’m working on. How we don’t fear being awake is a huge one!
There are some good yoga Nidra RUclips out there for sleep . The mindful movement. It helps me. Relax app is good too . Nature scenes with soft ambient music. Helps me. I turn my screen light down too
Thank you, this is a huge issue with me for most of my life, once i shut down the light, its like my inner hard drive starts thinking what i should do tomorrow about this and that, I use soothing meditation music, sometimes it works, I will try today what you suggested today.
Also - write your todo list for tomorrow before you climb into bed. You can do this. And change the script from "sleep is hard" to "I fall asleep easily".
Absolutely no sleep efforts, rules, rituals. Start with accepting what sleep you get. When hyperarousal is experienced, befriend it. This will rewire your brain. Don’t feed the fear by trying to push it away. Watch TV in bed, do the opposite. I suffered for 15 years with wrong thinking. But God used it all for good!!
That was wonderful talk on Insomnia and told in such plain clear English 👍 .. as we think we are. I will put your suggestions into practice from tonight. Thank you 🙏

Thanks so much Dan, your soothing voice and wise advice is so generously given. I've been using gratitude and other hints to help insomniacs and it's working somewhat. I can choose how to respond. Thanks again for the reminder and reassurance.
Great video, thank you Dan. Beautiful snow, very soothing. I don't have sleep problems, except that I sleep to much. I wonder if I am in the "rest and digest" (parasympathetic) state or is it the "distraction state"? I really don't know. I often want to sleep during the day even if I have slept 10 or 12 hours because of the fatigue. The pain I can handle, because certain days I don't have it anymore so I trust more, whereas the fatigue is constant. Any suggestions? And I love Dr. Joe Dispenza :-)
Thanks Dan, it's 4.54 am here. 😂 School holidays end in ten days so hopefully those early starts whether I like it or not will reset my body clock, but yes, the Cortisol angle makes perfect sense. 👍🙏
Thank you for the tips on sleep. Beautiful snow scape indeed. Would you have come across TMS issues relating to cold and hot weather? In the last couple of years I have experienced unpleasant sensations from being out in cold weather (especially wind) and very hot weather. The former hurts my face the latter makes my scalp and face itch. I suspect it is a conditioned response but would love your thoughts on it. Thank you.
There is no downside to calming the brain and body. Symptoms don't go away immediately. They will go away once the credible evidence of safety outweighs the brains false perception of danger. DansFastStart.com
my experience is that sleep is a bad place because of what happened to me a child at night... this is not dislodged by blublockers and visualization of 'nice pillows'
I'm not dismissing your childhood trauma. What I'm doing is offering ways to make sleep feel safer now in the present where those things are not still happening. You can do this.
I keep waking with gas. I got ibs after a virus. I slept 2 hours last night. CT scan all normal, blood tests normal. To make it worse, the health professions say ons cannot be cured esp. If I cannot sleep.
The digestive system is suppressed when under stress. A virus can cause the brain stress and things can get out of balance. don't listen to the no cure BS. The body knows how to take care if itself. Your job is to not stress about gas.
Great video. I can completely get on board with the reason for insomnia or waking with pain. But here’s where my doubt comes in... I have hip pain ( 1 leg shorter than the other from birth) , I wake up most nights with hip joint pain, it lessons as I move position or if I make my hip click. I’ve done the pain assessment and got 39. I mostly think the pain is TMS until the pain lessons when it clicks and then I think ‘ argh!!! My hip joint is rubbing my tendons, that’s why it hurts. This can’t be TMS” Can tms pain still make you have a bit of relief when you move position or pop your hip? X
Lisa - Even Dr. Schubiner who is one of the top TMS medical doctors would say that we rule out anything life threatening. Being uncomfortable sleeping and feeling a click is not that. Then we rule IN this thing called TMS. If the characteristics of the pain, personality, pain history, stress indicates that it's TMS, then it's TMS. Case closed - end of investigation. Yes, it can still be TMS if you can do something physical and get a slight temporary relief. The cause is still TMS. The solution is a TMS approach. As long as you feel you have a physical problem with your body, the brain will continue to send pain to protect you from this supposedly "damaged" part of your body. It's false. The perception that there's a body problem is why the pain happens and persists. My approach is here. ruclips.net/video/3vJgBnrhFt8/видео.html
Lisa, 1 leg shorter than the other do not cause pain. I have shorter leg and a flat feet also from the very childhood. And never had leg pains (only restless legs syndrome, which is not painfull).
Dan's right. I took everything to sleep. Meds. Pillows. Diet doctors even weird things like sleep with pillows between my legs. No socks. Yes socks ..q sock on and another one off lol everything. The medications used to make me look and feel like a zombie next day. It was bad. Real bad it caused my marriage to break. I had a big fear of not sleeping. That was 15 years ago. I've been sleeping like a baby ever since no matter if I had coffee or soda 1 minute before or if there is big time stress anxiety in my life. How I did it? I gave up ALL sleep meds diets , stop searching on the internet on sleep stuff, I just gave up. Didn't care anymore. Little by little I started sleeping. 2 hiurs....3 hours....5 hours...followed by a set back then all over again.. one thing I knew for sure...the fear was gone despite setbacks. Sleep like a baby. No matter what it can be done.
Crazy neighbor i had for 8 yrs, slashed my tires with a chainsaw at 1 am. Shooting off semi automatic weapons in the wee hrs. Dogs barking all night every night. My brain will never feel safe in bed .
Fear, stress, overthinking can release adrenaline and cortisole - the stress hormones - which signals to the brain that it is not safe to sleep. Calm. Safety.
