And of course sleeping bags don’t don’t create heat. Another problem is that now people are getting carbon monoxide poisoning from using generators and propane heaters so it’s not perfect and people are trying harder than you think they are.

All the other states chose to connect to the national power grid. Texas politicians chose to break the state off from the grid because the feds required winterization of equipment in order to join. That’s why you got cheap wind turbines that froze. Here in chilly California our turbines are spinning, but we can’t send any to Texas because your politicians chose to not connect.

What caused it was the temperature getting too low for too long. Heat pumps don't work when it gets really cold and heating systems have to switch to resistance heating. That takes many more times the energy. Northern homes generally use natural gas for heat. Most homes in Texas use heat pumps. Do the math.

Not convinced that 90% plants working fine while millions lost power for a day or more. If we have 90% power of usual, at least can do 75% for all homes - that is 1 hr off in a 4-hour window. If they can do that, there will be few complaints.

    • @TotlKaos

It's not the plants but the actual grid.. wires are not setup to support the heavy ice on them causing the problems.. trees and other overhanging items also break and fall on the wires.. The plants are running but getting that power to the people is the problem. We have this problem in the Northeast but not as bad as most of our stuff is built to withstand this. We still have issues but nothing like this. But then again a once in 100 year weather event is difficult to plan for.
