  • In Part 3 we apply the second coat and then wipe it off.
This is the finish I apply to just about every one of my woodworking projects. I haven't seen any other info on the web about it so I figured I'd put together a series of videos showing how I mix and apply it. See full description for more!
Part 1: Mixing • Best Woodworking Finis...
Part 2: First Coat • Best Woodworking Finis...
Part 3: Second Coat • Best Woodworking Finis...
Part 4: Burnish & Wax (Coming Soon)
I've found that most woodworking finishes are a mix of three factors:
    • Ease of application
    • Time spent applying
    • Beauty & Protection
And it's usually a tradeoff: every finish only gets you two of the three in most cases. This one gives you beauty and ease of application in exchange for time: each coat takes a day to dry and you'll usually want 4+ coats. But for me that's a trade I'm willing to make as I think this is one of the most beautiful finishes you can get and it's really easy to mix and apply.
I learned about this finish from my first woodworking course up in Orange County, CA with William Ng at his school: wnwoodworkings...

Excellent work going over all this. Be careful with the used rags. If they have finish on them, they can catch fire. Dry them flat or submerge in water to be safe.

Wouldn't it be too tacked up to wipe off after an hour?

I haven't had any problems wiping off after an hour...maybe it was REALLY warm it would get too tacky. But if that's the case, you can just add a little of the mixture to your rag first, then wipe. It'll sort of re-liquify under the rag and let you wipe it off.
