VW Transporter T4 Top & Bottom Gear Selector Bush Replacement (VOLKSWAGEN)

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- This video shows how to replace the top and bottom gear selector bushes on a Volkswagen Transporter T4.
As already stated in the video, it is not necessary to remove all the components i did to replace the bushes, it just made it easier to show what needed to be done and it was a much clearer view of what's happening. The battery died when i put the gear selector bush in, so have no footage of this but its the same as the other bushes i show.
Yes there is one bush that was not replaced that very much needed to be. It did not arrive with the other bushes and the van needed to be used so the repair could not be postponed.
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments below. I will help if i can.
Thanks for watching the video and if it helps in anyway and you would care to support me by leaving a one off tip then please follow the link below.

Perhaps the best video on the Internet on this topic. Thx.
Glad you think so!
what’s that big molegrip tool u used to squeeeze balls in on hooped bracket
They are called water pump pliers.
@ford873 I got some of amazon but were too.big r
To.use on bush wrong.angle.too.
Thankx for this extensive calm video, it helpt me a lot analysing my shifting troubles. A good sober detailed video is just a joy !
You're very welcome!
THE go-to video on YouToob for making this replacement. I used both-thumb pressure only to push home each bush on the ends of the pivot lever rather than opt for the pliers. 🙂
It can be done that way. Depends on where you get the bushes from. I have found some slip in no problem and some can be very, very tight.
Very good video, thx for that!
When I did the bush replacement, I felt it easier to press the smaller ball into the cup (already assembled into its mount) outside the car and install the T-shaped rod together with the cup mount back to its place.
Great tip! There is lots of ways that all work equally well.
Brilliant video. Thank you for taking the time to record this procedure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
day three the cup came out of the steel housing when attempting to insert the gear selector ball end . Day four I will drain all of the coolant remove the diesel water heater and associated plumbing which is making this seemingly fiddly job almost impossible . this is a nightmare of a job on a 2001 VW caravelle 2.5 TDI. good luck to anyone attempting this seemingly cheap repair .
Thank you for this video. I'm embarking on this repair on my 1993 Eurovan. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
Great video! Perfect opportunity to do short-shift mod as well with the link plate out 👍🏼
Absolutely!
Thank you 1000 times !!! The right top bush has fallen apart in my case o.O
Your welcome
Thanks a lot! Really good video of the work required to repair this.
Glad it helped
An excellent video, thanks for taking so much trouble.
My pleasure!
Bilgilendirici videon icin Türkiye den selamlar, teşekkür ederim.
Glad it helped
Thanks a lot! Saved my vacation 👍🏻👍🏻
Happy to help!
Excellent detailed video. Sadly I don’t have a lift or all the tools to copy it.
Sorry to hear that
to compliment this great video could you please add a section on how to set the gear lever when reinstalling, as this is causing me an absolute headache
thanks a lot. Nice work, will be proofed by myself tomorrow.
Good luck!
Cracking video . done this job a few years ago the videos that was here then mmmm is all I will say 😉
Ps see the big plat under neath with 3 holes in it . On flat side 30mm in drill a 14mm hole( I think same size as one your moving in) it will shorten your gear change
Cracking video
👍👍👍😜🏴🦕🦄😁✌🤞
Thanks 👍
You have just saved my day! many thanks !
Glad I could help!
This video is a present for me !
Thankyou very much.
You're welcome 😊
Fantastic! Thanks for the tutorial!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I can't quite see the bit your marking with paint, which seems to be the most crucial bit haha. Can you elaborate on that please? Thanks for taking the time though mate.
Really nice video thanks 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it
This has been so helpful to me thanks for the very well produced video and I have subscribed.
Thanks!
Well done but how about the square bushing we see in the last seconds which is completely rotten? Would have been the easiest change.
I do mention in the description for the video that not all the bushes were delivered / available when the job was carried out. The vehicle was needed back on the road and it was changed at a later date.
Hey! Amazing Video! BUT didnt you switched the rotating Plate below the the car - with that one side straight for the moving bar and the other slightly leaned angle one ?!
Great video - thank´s a lot. Would be great if you could post the part numbers.
A VW dealer will happily list the numbers for you, like I said in the description though, I did not use a main dealer due to the cost difference.
superb video .. my problem is my 2001 VW Caravelle is a 2.5 tdi with winter water heater and so many hoses and extra parts it is nigh on impossible to access the nuts and bolts .
I’ve got a Westfalia California exclusive that has exactly the same problem, please let me know if you find a way in 😺
Sorry to hear that, I have never personally had to attempt one with that in the way. Sounds like an absolute nightmare.
Thank you so much!!!! It's very helpfull for me. Would you know the reference code for the replacement pieces?? Specially for the small ball and other parts around it.
Sorry, off the top of my head i don`t. If you want to buy from VW, just call with your reg or chassis number and they can tell you the part numbers. If your UK based i use a company called Just Kampers, have had nothing but excellent service from them every time i have ordered anything. They sell complete repair kits as well for the linkages.

Hello great video, what grease was applied?
Amazing video, been looking for how to pop the gear linkage back insitu. What size Waterpump Pliers are those please? As always with jobs like this I need to get it fixed and back on the road quick! Cheers
Great video thank you , I changed the bushings and now I cant get reverse at all :(
Sorry to hear that, did you mark the selector adjustment and get it back in exactly the same place as before?
I am afraid I did not , I suppose that I shal have to slowly move it towards the front until I find reverse.
You might get lucky. Sometimes, depending on how dirty the linkage is, it can be quite easy to see where it used to sit before it was removed. Just get under there with a good light and hope for the best.
My gear shifter doesn’t have an extreme amount of play, but it does require a lot of force to operate the gear shifter. Is this problem also caused by worn out bushings?
Top video, could anyone give me a part number for the nylon bush at 9:44?
I need to find where to get those jumbo pipe pliers he uses to pop the ball into the bush at around 15:20 in the vid
They are a pair of water pump pliers. Those particular ones are Snap-On. Just Google “water pump pliers” and you will find several alternatives.
Hi, (3rd time lucky i hope)
Thank you for this, it's been very helpful.
I'm hoping you can help me a little,
I ordered some items to help me do this job (or part of it, but all the components i received, were made of a hard, rigid plastic.
can you confirm if they should be a slightly flexible rubber-ish or silicone, before i A) - try to force something that simply 'won't go' and/or B) make a fool of myself complaining about the product
Its all pretty fairly solid. As its the gear linkage you don't really want it soft and floppy. That's why I put it in the hot water to soften them up and make them slightly easier to slide on. With that and plenty of grease you shouldn't really have any issues.
@@ford873 cheers fella, I understand what you're saying,... but the parts I received have zero 'give' even when heated,...
I've since got parts from somewhere else, so I'm now pretty sure that the kit I got from Autodoc, whilst exactly the same size and shape, are pretty much useless...
Thanks again for the video, do you have any advice for fitting those ball things on on situ, without having to remove the while thing and put it in a vise?
how come you didnt change that batters rear bush wanted to see how you done that too
They did not all arrive in time for when the job was needed to be done. However there was no apparent wear on that bush so the customer said to carry on regardless.
perfect
Thank you very much.
There is another part which you missed to change . It’s located near the metal thing where you marked with paint it’s orange colour . On 13:49 you can see that part it literally above the tank
Yeah I know, it’s mentioned in the description for the video. Not all the parts arrived and it needed to be done. As the vehicle had no gears. It was done at a later date but not filmed.
@@ford873 oh i see . Right now I’m changing the clutch and as the gear is removed so thinking to change all that stuff
Yeah definitely worth doing while it’s all stripped apart, especially if they have never been changed before.
Awesome.👍
Thank you! Cheers!
hi i trued this and the bolt broke off and im trying to get the name of the bar can you help me please
A question, if I may. About 2.35min in you removed the three allen bolts under the left hand (larger) bush bracket. Did I see you were using a 1/4" drive ratchet with a 6mm allen socket? I am curious to know what you used to get the rear allen bolt out (the one nearest the bulkhead) as the top of the gearbox is very tight there. It looks like you are working on a RHD model, mine is LHD so a little less space to work.
I have just managed to get those three allen bolts out using a combination of some new allen keys I have modified to shape and length, what a pain! So any pointers as to how to get those bolts back in quicker would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Yeah it was very tight for space there. If I recall as it was a while ago, I used a Allen key with a 90 degree bent end. Then I put a small pair of mole grips on the bent end with the long thin straight end into the top of the bolt.
@@ford873 Thanks, that was my general idea for reinstalling the allen bolts. I will give that a try. As you say, it really is tight. I think I need to grow longer arms!!!!
grate vid what are the parts called is it a kit for all the stuff you changed
Check out the description for the video, I link to the parts used and where I got them from.
nice one for getting back to me i cant find the link you told me to go on for the parts
@@wayneturner7678 Sorry my bad, I linked to them in a reply to a previous question and did not add them to the description. I have now added it to the description. I got them here.

I only got three bushes with my repair kit ??
Depends on who and where you buy them from.
Think I'd of done the short shift mod while I had all that off.
Super .Teşekkürler
Thank you.
day two found the big ball it had come off the steel pushrod . 2001 t0 2023 not a bad lifespan . getting the replacement bush kit / set is a nightmare in Portugal none of the VW agents have any spares and ordering spares is a ritual of begging and bowing and scraping to the storeman . not the sort of service one would expect of a VW service centre . in Evora Portugal .. It is looking like I will have to cast my own replacements .
Hi there, I have a t4 2002 model.
I’ve Replacment the 3pcs Gear Linkage Selector Bush Kit in the engine bay but my gear stick is still very sloppy.. goes into gear but very badly.
What other parts do I need to fix this problem? Any advise would be much appreciated.
I would advise checking and if needed replacing the rest of the bush's shown in the video to start with.

Onde eu posso comprar essas buchas ?

No Reino Unido, recomendo Just Kampers. Meu único conselho em seu país seria diretamente da Volkswagen. Infelizmente não conheço nenhum lugar de fator automático onde você esteja. Desculpa.
