- Dachau Concentration Camp was one of the first and most notorious Nazi concentration camps during World War II. It was located near the town of Dachau in southern Germany. Established in March 1933, shortly after Adolf Hitler came to power, Dachau served as a model for many other concentration camps that followed.
Dachau initially housed political prisoners, primarily opponents of the Nazi regime. Over the years, it expanded to include other groups, such as Jews, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Romani people. Prisoners at Dachau endured harsh conditions, forced labor, medical experiments, and unimaginable suffering.
The camp was liberated by U.S. forces on April 29, 1945, near the end of World War II. The horrors discovered at Dachau shocked the world and served as evidence of the extent of Nazi atrocities. Today, Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site stands as a solemn reminder of the Holocaust and the millions of lives lost during that dark period in history.
