This is a very well thought out presentation on ETX vs OTX. When ETX first came out, it was described as ‘cutting edge stuff’ that will be developed on ETX, then the popular options ported back over to OTX. We now know that due to the main developer of OTX working for FrSKy on ETHOS, that this plan will never be implemented. So OTX is stagnant, but for a fixed wing (LOS) flyer on a Horus x10 (no touch screen) that is actually perfectly fine for me. I understand the concept that ETX will progress further away from OTX, but as of today I find no ‘got to have feature’ in ETX that I am missing to make me want to change (maybe I am missing something?). Plus, I like the dense screen layout of OTX where a lot of information can be provided (a trade off of making the user interface more touch screen friendly). A great video John. Thanks for putting it out. It did allow me to re-evaluate ETX, but for now I’ll stick with OTX for now.
Thanks for watching. You completely understand the spirit for which this video is given. You look, you evaluate, and you make your choice, but it's an INFORMED choice. This type of dialogue and discussion is often what's missing in today's world. I'm 100% behind you though. If your current firmware does what you want/need, and the features of the alternative aren't compelling reason to you, then you should stick with what you've got. Simply could not agree more with your evaluation.
I have not switched yet but you sure do make it look easy and tempting. Thanks for a great video tour and instructions. Subbed and hoping for more great informative videos. 👍👍
I guess maybe it's time. I have a TX16 with AG01s, but honestly don't enjoy messing with my radio like a lot of people do. As much as I appreciate the work going into Edge, updating 3 or 4 times per year doesn't appeal to me. Every time they release a new version I look at the roadmap and decide to wait until it calms down. 😂🍻
I think I’m going to finally make the switch to EdgeTX. My question is do I have to update the OpenTX firmware to the latest version or just the boot loader before I download EdgeTX.
I've tested the latest version of OpenTX to the latest version of EdgeTX and it converts just fine. Keep in mind, you still lose your widgets, so you will have to set them all up again.
Just ordered a TX 16S MkII Max with AG01 Gimbals, making the switch from all my NX series radios. Now just need to learn a whole new system all over again :)
Convinced a new flyer to get this radio and he loves it. I'm still running version from when I bought it in Sept2022 and will hold off updating until 2.8 is complete. Though on his radio he bought this month, like I had to on mine, you still have to delete the default background screen image in the image file of radio in order to change to different themes. You can change it, but once you turn radio off and back on again, the default theme is back up...What's up with that?
Very true--never really cared for that myself. You should go to the EdgeTX github and make a feature request to respect the theme wallpaper over anything pre-installed if a theme wallpaper exists.
Would LOVE luv love to see EdgeTX Companion flesh out the functionality of Custom Screens tab. I don't even see that on the forecast of future developments. :(
Have you had a look at Ethos, it looks like an interesting interface? Not as complex as Edge or Open TX but it has a good interface especially for simpler normal setups.

Hello, I usually enjoy your videos. I have a question about the usage of Edge TX to bind a Turbo Timber Evolution and make it similar to all the functions that are included if you use a Spectrum transmitter. Do you have some clues about this binding that you can share with us, please? Regards
There's no real way IMHO to quantify an answer to the question "which is more stable" and I call BS on anybody who says they can because software is imperfect and it's impossible to find every condition or match of hardware and software that could result in a problem. What I CAN quantify is about 4 months of flying with EdgeTX 2.7.1 and not a single EM or radio failure and I have Edge on very expensive models. 700 class helis and till now my biggest plane which is 78". It's about to take an 85" plane up. The features question is a trap. I suppose there might be some setting, some variable, some special function, that might exist on OpenTX that doesn't exist on EdgeTX. I'm not willing to do the audit to find out OpenTX has a battery voltage range of 3.3 to 3.8 while Edge has a range of 3.4 to 3.8. What I CAN say is that all of my logic setups work, all of the capacity regarding inputs, mixes, outputs, gvars are on Edge. All of the meaningful model settings, radio settings, protocols, and scripts that I USE are available on Edge.
