As a person who was born a few hours after Rio tinto opened who’s dad was at that game who witnessed the loss in the concacaf final and In The mls cup final I love real salt lake and sitting in the supporters section is a blast a must while visiting Utah shout out to los caballeros reales and all the other supporters groups nosotros somos real
I'm an LDS kid from Richmond, Virginia. I was born in Salt Lake but moved when I was too young to remember. I'm a huge RSL fan...supporting all the way from VA! Proves that this community/culture spreads across the country. Yes, it does help that I'm Mormon, but this video is on point! Great vid and go RSL!
Usually only possible early season (March/April) or during the playoffs (November/December) but Snowbird was open for a ridiculously long time this season, into June!
Nice work Calen and team!! Great video!! As a Utahn, religion will always be a strong characteristic of the state. For how strong people want to remove or add religion into the local culture, it's great to see RSL and the Jazz bring people together instead of growing the hate.
This was a very educational Doc. One thing you always learn is People are People. If you get to heart of them you see the good sides. I'm sure the people of Salt Lake get annoyed when outsiders don't understand their life. It's good Calin gavels us an inside view. Props from ATL
Also. I need to say this. I am an avid RSL fan. Love the club. Love the players, the coach, the fan base, the stadium. I love it all. I am also LDS. I don't view people of other religions, or with no religion as any different. I feel a misconception about us mormons is that we judge everyone if you are not Mormon. We should all just love each other as human beings.
Thanks for coming to SLC! I'm an RSL fan living in Phoenix (btw a Phoenix Rising episode could be great) and I love seeing the club represented as the unifying force that it is. I hope you felt welcome.
Great introspective peace on Salt Lake City Calen. Very informative. learned things that I never knew about Salt Lake City. Love learning more about the history of RSL and their relationship with the community there! #TheMovement
Pro sports plays an interesting role in a community like the Wasatch Front, where half the community heavily identifies as something. In some places, a team becomes a symbol of a specific group, like Celtic and Rangers for religion in Scotland, or how FC Barcelona has symbolized Catalan self-determination. Even in the US and Canada, this was true in various places, with prominent historical clubs like Metros-Croatia, New York's Pancyprian-Freedoms and Greek American, or Maccabi Los Angeles. There's strong history for several other groups in Utah, including Utes and Paiutes, Jews, Greeks, Blacks, and Japanese. RSL works hard to be the team of everyone, and does it well.
As a punk with a bright pink hawk, this is the one place the Mormons don't think im a total freak 😅 still, glad we can all come together over the best fucking sport and the best fucking team
These little episodes are so well put together. Great host, great camerawork 👍 as a Houstonian (hate Utah) this made Salt Lake look ‘somewhat’ appealing
I'm an RSL fan and SLC local. I don't understand why they are talking about the church and mixing it with Real Salt Lake. I guess we are actually so boring as a city that we have to bring religion into it. Although I must say, you represented our city well. Thanks for spotlighting us.
Thanks. We were hoping to put help people break down any misconceptions or mystery around SLC and learn & discover it for ourselves! Glad you felt well-represented!
As another non-LDS Salt Lake local and RSL fan, I feel that the religious aspect is a little heavy handed at times, but you do have to mention that here. And I appreciated the idea of discarding big misconceptions that even I, a non-member, often have to explain to people out of state. And as the Salt Lake metropolitan area grows increasingly secular, I think that Real has the potential to be a powerful bridge between very different cultures. Excellent videos and interviews, man! This makes me so much more proud of our club!
Alas, no good skiing in greater SLC right about now. Summer comes slowly to the Wasatch, but it does come. (Meanwhile there's hiking and mountain biking.)
After 8 years and 5 knee surgeries, it didn't always feel early ;) I loved every minute (besides the surgery parts) and I'm so thankful I'm still involved in the game and getting to tell stories like this around it!
By far...the worst name in MLS. I'm watching the Leagues Cup in Spanish and the Mexican play-by-play sportscaster refuses to pronounce "Real Salt Lake" like it was meant to be (re-AL). Instead he calls it "real" Salt Lake. Hahaha!!!
lol they completely stole it from real Madrid. There is nothing royal about salt lake. It's not just them though all the MLS team names are pretty lame. I wish teams would draw history from their own region like union or republic fc. All the fake names and all the animal names are already used by nfl etcetera. Using regional artwork and themes will give a more historic feel to such a new league. Anyways just my two cents.
I feel ya. I'm not a fan of all the team names in MLS but its really just a matter of personal preference. A part of me is nostalgic for teams like Kansas City Wiz but SKC is much better. At first, I hated SKC but now it makes sense - feels natural. I wouldn't expect Real to change any time soon, and the club has been so successful I think it would be a mistake to change it now - just my 2 cents
@@robsumner462 the owner Dave Checketts asked Real Madrid for permission to use the name and they said yes and declared us a sister team to them, rsl and real Madrid played an exhibition match in Salt lake August 12, 2006. Real Madrid also influenced local politicians to approve the construction of Rio Tinto stadium donated a very large sum of money to rsl to establish a youth academy. There are over 40 professional soccer/football teams that use "Real" in their name and almost all of them have no monarch who authorized it, so it's not that far fetched to have that name. Also Utah usually likes a bit of quirkiness in its sports team names. Utah's professional basketball team is the Utah Jazz dispite there being almost no Jazz music influence in Utah. They kept the name from the team's old New Orleans days and today utah sports fans couldn't be happier with it.
Leave it to the Mormons to tie religion to EVERY thing they do. You can't even walk into a liquor store with out getting a lecture on religion. And it's not even full stranth beer, if I want 3.2 beer, i would buy it from my place of work. I am glade I don't have to spind more then 24 hours in Utah on the 26th.
I think soccer was tied to religion long before Mormons. Part of the reason soccer is such a global sport is because the British would take a bible and soccer to all the places they visited in Africa, Asia, North America, South America and Europe.

Thanks Tyler! Glad you liked it man.
As a Timbers fan and a latter-day saint one of the best teams in MLS
As an away fan (Atlanta) I've done the whole skiing-then-RSL thing as a visitor and it's fantastic. Long day but a very good day.
That's cool. Pretty amazing you can do that pretty easily all in 1 day!
Usually only possible early season (March/April) or during the playoffs (November/December) but Snowbird was open for a ridiculously long time this season, into June!
Bird never closes before Memorial. It's not all that unrealistic if you're a good skier.
Try Reno - you can ski, golf, and gamble all in one day - fall or spring. Good times in the west.

I love how soccer just melds in perfectly with the culture in the city that its in. it becomes the physical representation, its amazing.

This was probably the best episode yet IMO
Thanks Ryan, it's one of my favorites too!
Much love. Can't wait to see more.
These videos are so authentic
Such a great video! I love the Salt Lake fan base and being a part of it is really special!
Thanks Nate! Glad you enjoyed it!
Go get it RSL !!

Another great episode by honorary Texan Calen Carr and his team.
This second career is really taking off - Congratulations.
Thanks Nigel! And thanks for my TX passport! Got it right at my desk in case my credentials ever come into question! So well done

Wow, great video Calen, these movement shows are addictive.

The Movement videos are always amazing but this one was particularly good
thanks Seth!
Also, great interview with Brian Dunseth and Attorney General Reyes. Good natural vibes to this piece. #TheMovement
I'M and mexican and I'm rsl fan I'm live in American Fork Utah
Nice thanks for coming

Great Video. Hello from across the Rockies from The Colorado Rapids

Love the series!
Thanks Abel, check out the rest on our MLS RUclips page "Movement" playlist!
Very interesting
I'm vacationing in SLC as I'm watching this (NYRB fan) 😂
Nice, hit up park slope for good skiing and if you're looking for a good dinner rec go to the restaurant downstairs of Bodega downtown.
Alas, no good skiing in greater SLC right about now. Summer comes slowly to the Wasatch, but it does come. (Meanwhile there's hiking and mountain biking.)
Didn't know sheamus was a fan
Man as an RSL fan they focused way to add on the religious side of Utah but most of the supporters aren’t Mormon
Did Reyes really need to bring up that game in '09? Man, that one hurt.
Same.
IM SALT LAKE TIL I DIE!
Do an episode for Cincinnati.
That says a lot when a white guy says theirs a lot of white people
Now we need Calen to start fanboying so we can get on TWIM more...
Ha, I'm on it!! #RSLTID
I’d love to play for this team
So less clicks anyway.
I am from Germany, I pray for the US football...ahem... soccer...! :-)

Guy in the thumbnail looks like Sheamus
Homie literally just refered to your FC as a "Product" round 4:00 ... let that sink in..
GO TIMBERS!!!
Calen why did you retire so early?
Injuries man.
After 8 years and 5 knee surgeries, it didn't always feel early ;) I loved every minute (besides the surgery parts) and I'm so thankful I'm still involved in the game and getting to tell stories like this around it!
Calen Carr oh that sucks man as a dynamo fan you were awesome! Your goal in the MLS cup was insane. Too bad we didn't win though :(
Thanks hot shot!! agreed!
Who's your favorite player?
-Wouuu
Haha big mistake thinking Mormons don’t like talking about religion. 😂
14:14 🤣
Make another Salt Lake video that’s not about the church!
1:04 omg Calen why are you YELLING? 5:51 AGAIN. It's so jarring in comparison to how he talks like a normal person for the rest of the video
Ha, sorry Rachel. Normal is the goal!
Don't worry, it's a great series and I still love you Calen, or is it Clarin? Teehee. Keep up the good work!
Ha, thanks RAchel!

Is this a low key propaganda this guy's focus ing way too much on the Mormon church?
you lost me at 5 seconds into it with "the church"
Timbers have a better soccer fan base and better fans.
Out of staters need to stay the hell away cuz yall are making the houses to damn expensive
Joseph Smith was a mormon...
DUM DUM DUM DUM DUM!!!!!!
Sporting KC >
Cristian Hernandez
King Leipzig lol settle down, new boy
*Galatians 1:8* kills false religions like Islam and Mormonism.
real salt lake needs to change their name
embrace it.

Real salt lame
Gianni Lame Tello
you're not supported or blessed by royalty. you're not "real". Get your own name.
We asked Real Madrid for permission and they were delighted to partner with us. This name has now become part of the culture in Salt Lake City.

Anyone who is very religious will try to tie everything back to religion, this is not something unique to mormons.
European soccer is better
Mike Schmidt 4THE FNaF BAND4 in the european leagues there is more money. More money=better players. The mls will grow to be just as competitive as the european leagues eventually
I was hoping to see a video about "soccer", not about stupid religions.
Real salt lake is a joke. Galaxy 4 life
Gianni Tello like your life which you dont have🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
And now they are shit (aug 10 2017)
