Thank you Andrew for all these great lessons. May you do a grammar lesson about uses and differences between Present Perfect Continuous Tense and Past Perfect Continuous Tense ? Would it be possible? Thanks for everything
OH, how very important is this rather simple set of English language rules? More and more frequently today, I am hearing, not only the average person in the street but newsreaders and public speakers, uttering such crashingly bad combinations as: " someone called for a ambulance today to attend a accident in the city." I am hearing "a umbrella, a orange, a anniversary, etc. In addition to this, there is also an escalating use of the long A as a general indefinite article, as in: "This is AY telephone," or "I have here AY banana," and "This is AY good reason to reflect." For most of my life I have heard the long A in grammar used for emphasis, " Ay specific reason," or to identify an unknown, as in Question: "Is this the village where Jim Turner lives?" Answer: It may be, there is AY Jim Turner working at the local pub."
sir how can we determine or differentiate that terrible advice is uncountable noun and stupid idea is countable idea please tell the rule in detail to recognise whether it is uncountable noun or countable noun
We can not use "a and an" before sport names , can't we???..example : I play a football or I play football? We like to play a hockey or We like to play hockey??? Which are them is true? Please answer me. Thanks a lot.
David is a director of microsoft . ( Microsoft had several directors . David is one of those directors . ) David is the person not Mark sorry Mr. Andrew to recorrect your sentence :)
+I Gamer gamer Hello and thanks for the comment and question. Let me give you an example: Imagine that you want to buy a car. You visit a garage which is selling 10 cars. Your favourite car is car number 7. Car number 7 is a *specific* car. It is a particular car. You do not want to buy any car. There is a *specific* car that you want to buy. "specific" is the opposite of general. Best wishes, Andrew
+Crown Academy of English I understand your explain. But I have one question. Why does not use article in forth sentence? You said 'car number 7' is a specific car, therefore we can say, your favourite car is "the" car number 7... isn't it?
jyt80 My answer here was to define the word "specific" - Unfortunately your question is complicating that explanation but let me try to explain: Remember that we use the indefinite article to refer to a member of a larger group. (I explain that in this video. Watch it again. The example in the video was "Mark is *a* student at Cambridge University.") "Number 7 is *a* specific car." is another example of that. - Each car is a specific car isn't it?! Number 8 is specific, number 3 is specific. There are several specific cars and number 7 is one of those specific cars. That is why "Number 7 is *a* specific car." is correct in this context. Andrew
+jyt80 To add to my reply: Of course, the conversation with the salesman would use both "a" and "the": Customer: I am interested in buying *a* car. Salesman: Which car do you like? Customer: I like number 7. Salesman: Car number 7? Well *the* car is 5 years old......" Customer: "How old is *the* car?" etc.... Andrew
+Crown Academy of English Oh! Thank you very much! But you don't understand my question. This is completely my fault. My question is why there is no the article in thins sentence: "your favourite car is __ car number 7". Anyway, I understand at all. Thanks again!
Hello I have a question. I saw that we can use a/an instead of 'one'. I mean, when I say 'I want a computer.' Does that mean 'I want just one computer but two, three or four computer etc. Or like you wrote any computer is fine; it doesn't have to be a particular one. You'd be really helping me out.
How would you construct this sentence? " (a/an/the/no article) planning system provides (a/an/the/no article) capability of assigning (a/an/the/no article) primary resources as (a/an/the/no article) business constraint on (a/an/the/no article) weekly calendar that is located on (a/an/the/no article) side of (a/an/the/no article) scrollbar pane."
