Prior to his death, Bruce attempted to sue Chan Wai-Man's company - Sing Hoi (Star Sea) - because of how they incorporated his image into Fist of Unicorn. After Bruce died, they retaliated by doing the same thing again in a CWM film called The Chivalrous Knight. This film began with a mini-doc, The Last Days of Bruce Lee, which exploited the fact that Bruce's mistress was in the film. There's even a promo photo where they cut and pasted CWM's head over Unicorn Chan's head to make it look like he is hitting Bruce. The Sing Hoi company were a front for the 14K Triad.
Despite Bruce being Golden Harvest's golden goose, Chow had the international box office revenue of Bruce's four complete martial arts movies to keep him afloat. In particular, repositioning The Way of the Dragon as an Enter the Dragon sequel of sorts ("Return" of the Dragon) was part of Chow's gambit...then there was the Game of Death footage to capitalize on. Chow's mistake was that he overestimated the appeal of George Lazenby.
In 1974, Chow poached Michael Hui from Shaw Brothers and got to enjoy huge box office success multiple times. Then he poached Jackie Chan from Lo Wei, and Yuen Woo-Ping from Seasonal.

Excellent explanation of inch power-I always interpreted it as how you should be punching in Wing Chun all the time-the demos that Bruce did is just illustrating the type of power you can generate from a short distance.
Your knowledge of Wing Chun and Chinese culture and the kung fu culture in NYC is impressive and extensive. Having grown up in NYC hanging out at all the old places like the 43rd chamber often seeing guys like Ron Van Clief, Taimak, Method Man, Jeru the adamant, frequenting Places like Bok Li Tai in China town for my weapons books and instructional to your discussions on all the sifus I use to read about-your podcast is a trip down memory lane and I’m always finding out things I didn’t know about.
Love that you covered Chan Wai Man because he had the rep as a certified bad ass and real life triad member-I remember 1st seeing him in Chinese Godfather and later realizing he was the main bad guy ninja in five Element Ninja. He’s the only Kung Fu movie guy that I’ve seen in a full contact fight (against a Japanese kickboxer). I’ve read that Chen Kwan Tai (iron monkey/Boxer from Shang Tung was also a full contact Champion). Can you verify that?
Also can you discuss Duncan Leung and are you familiar with his brother Henry Leung (he taught a wing Chun style called Buhuda Hand Wing Chun in NYC)
Anyway this podcast was made for a guy like me cause you cover the topics that guys like me want to know- keep slipping in those verbal constant jabs at Beerdy cause not only is it funny he deserves it for being a fountain of misinformation on Bruce Lee!

Hey Sifu Alex, i'm a WT teacher in Brazil, on the inch punch thing, my Dai Sifu Hans from Germany always said its kinda useless in a real situation and demonstrated it practically. Allthough the falling step is great and can even fit in between chain punches, and in contrast with interchanging falling step with the spine's springy power with long punch range and all that kind of energy is useful for myriad of things anyway, The only place it can be actually practical and efficient that we've been taiught and pressure tested is really agains grappling or on the ground, and it actually works wonders and all my jiu jitsu friends hate it so much i can't help but to love it as a technique because JJ is just so popular in Brazil it makes my day every time i use these principles. Its interesting how the european WT evolved in this manner, i have a nice question for you but in another comment, great content as always.

Other Chinese gongfu styles sometimes call the inch punch 短力 (short force). Many styles have it, and I think it would be good to teach your female MMA fighter friend the method of generating short power. It is very useful against grapplers who typically think once they have you in clinch or the typical stand up Judo hold (lapel/sleeve or lapel/arm, or neck/arm) that you can't generate power to hurt them with a strike. It is true that big gloves will absorb a little bit of the force, but who says you have to hit with your fist? Short force can be issued through the shoulder, elbow, forearm, chest, or hip just as well as through the fist. Even if it doesn't take them down it will usually mess up their throw.

    • @Sifu-Myers
      @Sifu-Myers 2 года назад

That's the great thing but probably the most misunderstood thing about short force or other types. It's called "force" because it isn't meant for just your punches. It was definitely an eye opener when I found out just how many ways these things can be used

Hi Sifu, one question (thats actually two questions) for the next episode.
As a European WT practitioner in the third technician degree, i've loved seeing your podcasts and finding out more about the modern history of all the Leung Ting related WT in the world, which also ties in to so much of what i also practice in. so here's the question:
The more i learn about the differences between European-based Leung Ting WT and other places' Leung ting WT, the more i find that the European branches seem to be so much more practical and self defense based in nature, such as with the so called "fighting ritual" that originated from a thing called the blitz defense, that in my branch of learning has a bunch of wooden dummy techniques that are taught to first degree students, it seems that these kinds of techniques originating from wooden dummy forms in so many other branches would never be taught this early or are taboo to be taught this early, do you have any insights on these matters and why these things like so many techniques in WT are still seen as secrets of the trade to this day and so many masters put these behind expensive *pay for it* barriers or teach the wrong techniques only to correct you later after you've paid for the real deal and why is this so oppenly accepted and not seen as a shady deal? And if students are practicing wooden dummy stuff this early, and theres so much wooden dummy stuff in the chi sao sequences, why not just teach them that specific this on the dummy already? it just grinds my gears ya know?

I really liked this podcast! Especially the part about how a lot of boxers have a better understanding of Wing Chun than a lot of so called masters do. It's also true that very few Wing Chun guys say anything of real value to educate people or give people something to think about. I actually wrote a book about this topic called Centreline Boxing. Eric from Wing Chun Illustrated requested a copy of the book for review. I sent it but it'll probably be a while before they get to it. Anyway keep it up!

    REACTS:
Re: Bruce Lee's vanity - his teenaged movies DO remind me of Mark-Paul Goselaar from Saved By The Bell...
Re: Triad assassination - the only theory that would kinda/sorta work is if the Bamboo Union set up a hit at Betty Ting's to resurrect Jimmy Wang Yu's career... but drug-related weirdness is way outside their bullets and hatchets M.O.
    QUESTION FOR FUTURE EPISODE:
In a recent episode you discussed "mixing Wing Tsun with other Kung Fu styles". What are your thoughts on Sanshou, and when pressure-testing/competing in Kung Fu "Bei Mo/Bi Wu" matches or tournament-fighting, do you prefer Sanshou or Kuoshu Leitai rules?

    • @Chronicskillness
      @Chronicskillness 2 года назад

I think if the Triads wanted Bruce Lee he wouldn't have made it out of San Francisco fall 1959.
Bruce also wouldn't have walked into Lau Bun's Choi Li Fut school and started bragging when he got to San Francisco. If you're not familiar with Master Lau Bun, look him up. Same deal with his involvement with James Yimm Lee and his feud with his teacher TY Wong. Who taught Hung Gar and Wing Chun, but was associated with Lau Bun's Hung-Sing "community enforcement."

At the 46:00 mark, very interesting topic on the Bruce Lee learning the "Jeet Kune" form. Not sure if the gentleman you're talking about ("uncle" Siu) is the same one Jessie Glover mentioned, but I believe it might be. I remember he pointed to a big brownish building in Seattle and mentioned that Bruce Lee was teaching there for a bit, and the Chinese gentleman upstairs that worked there was the one that taught him the Jeet Kune form. The info you mentioned of "uncle Siu" sounds like it fits pretty accurately with what Mr. Glover and Sifu Steve Smith previously detailed.

I also worked the doors with a Wing Chun man who never used it but instead like us he went for the choke or arrest techniques, So I don't know how true this is, as I heard it second hand. would this be suitable as a self defence technique?

10:00 see, for me I relate everything in JKD to WING CHUN. I do all the same. So for me.. that means, the ONE INCH PUNCH is basically SAM TZE. I’ll use all my body weight with my BUI SAO. 1. INTERCEPTION BY PIERCING. Ok.. this is a good jkd guy set up. Not a bum set up. So right on right or left I’m talking. Now. 2. PAK SAO CHEUNG CHOY this is used like a football tackle. It’s two handed, it crashes. It slaps the bridge just like you guys do in wing chun. Except.. the ENTIRE ARM is used as a weapon. What does that mean? Well.. it means all my weight with 1. BUI SAO 2. PAK N CHEUNG 3. PAI JAANG n QUAN SAO transitional movement or CRASH AGAIN with PAI JARN. So that’s the SAM TZE to me. All poked n rakes n bladed hands. Slaps, all that sets us back up.

Hey Sifu Alex, sorry for OT but since this is your newest clip. I have a "request" or better said question. Is it possible in the future to talk about why so many Americans believe Wing Chun is all BS and doenst work at all? I have an endless discussion with some boxing dude here on YT which wont end. Its strange to me as European (German) why it seems Americans believe WC is all BS and nothing works. Sure its ok to be critical, and i see some elements of WC very critical and risky to do in a street fight, but it has elements which are imo very effective.
I am getting more and more the feeling many WC which is taught in the USA is not good, like Krav Maga for example. Real Krav is in Israel with Inscturors like Itay Gil or Dennis Hanover, not in the US.

It's Ip-Man NOT The Yip Man descendants who makes bold appearance in public, go into The Donnie Yen's Ip-Man position, waits to be attack & can't defend once attacked!! Because they tries to remember how Donnie's Ip-Man defeated his attacker instead of doing what's natural to HIM not the character of the film 🎥 who influence his interest in Wing Chun in the first place

KAPOW, the Genius does it again 'Dead On Balls Accurate!' Does your wife slap you alot for being so dang right all the time? You elequently and thoroughly put the "1-inch punch' theory to rest and did not even have to consult with BEERdy to do it. Great assesment on the different influences of Bruce's version of bridge force as well as making the point of it being a demonstration of theory vs actual technique to add to one's tool kit. Thank you for that. And the expansion of Bruce's way, of the influences that he utilizes, studies and incorporates to 'his' way, so spot on. So many JKD/Bruce Lee followers/practioners seem to interpret what Bruce did, to what we should follow or interpret literally. I believe the man shared his path, his way (which was unstructured and not composed of one way) of 'No way as way' approach that got him to where he was at in his short life span, with the willingness of his studies, his drive for his purpose, his road of self-discovery, his genetics, his dedication to his art/practice (not the 14, 15 or 16 hours as some put it...), thinking outside the box, developing his body to the ultimate, developing his mind/body coordination, living his philosophies thru thought and application.... We all got to see a glimpse of genius in the making. But the beauty of it all, he left the gift of taking the same challenge and incorporate the concepts of his way/path to inspire the same to others. To take our way, to find through his art, that was and is ever-evolving and adapt that to our core drive through mind/body expression. And become an expressive individual through our beliefs, practices and applications of our ever evolving training. This is what Bruce meant to me and feel gifted me the same right to the journey of expression, with the combinations of influence and experience of my life. And so grateful for that core inspiration. Thus in doing so, I cannot and wish not to 'look' like Bruce and reinact his steps for those are what he needed to be Bruce. We all have our own experiences, pracitces, beliefs, ailments, pluses and minuses that compose us all uniquely. Enjoy the result of the master of his life, - Bruce Lee and so inspired to continue the mastery of thy self...
Sorry for the babble, but your genius is also a deep inspiration KFG, Thank you once again.

I was training with some of Hawkins Cheung's students in a park until the pandemic. Sifu Alex, can you interview one of his senior students on your podcast? I think it would be very interesting.

IMO, Bruce Lee had that fashion style. What happened? I mean, most MMA fighters now dress tacky, IMO. McGregor is the only with fashion. What do you think?

What? I thought the Shaolin origin story came from the great grandson of a particular monk who taught wisdom at a shaolin temple. An evil force ruined that temple, father and son each believed the other had perished. Fifteen years later, they were reunited. Cue Jeff Danna music.

NYC Lee the history of nearly all Kung Fu systems is folklore. Especially the Wing Chun's nun Ng Mui teaches Yim Wing-Chun WC. WC was a fast track system (modified Snake and Crane from Hung Gar) used to train resistance fighters during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to fight the Manchu, British and Japanese.
Doesn't mean any of these systems don't work. Just a product of how things were in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and then everything that happened after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. Especially post WWII Mao seizing power and Southern masters fleeing to Hong Kong and Northern masters fleeing to Taiwan.
There was embellishing used as marketing as this was the first time there was "commercial schools".
And there's just as much Taoism in Chinese Martial Arts if not more. Anything to do with the 5 Forms/Elements/Organs (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth)... the 8 Trigrams, the 64 Hexagrams, Yin Yang etc? Is all Taoism.

Super, SUPER RIGHT ✅ 👏 Sifu 👌 !! When Bruce did that 1 inch punch 👊 sending the guy sliding 12 ft across by vertically drawing back ( delivering a punch vertically from your hips) wasn't done traditionally by a Wing Chun practitioner . He modified it where Americans can comprehend his 👊 power from their Limited ideologies of how to 👊. ( The John Wayne draw your 👊 back to about a whole yard to deliver 1 👊 & your opponent suppose to stand their with your other 🖐holds his 👔 waiting [ with his own totally free 👐,doing what?? Dangling from the armpits of course!! USELESS ] to take 1 Right A Cross The Chops was the norm even in the martial arts 🌏 of that 🕙!! Ah😄!! American cinematic fight choreography🤠! Thems Were The Days!! sadly to say 😞, still being practiced to this day 😞 . However, later on in Chinese 📺 , Bruce did that 👊 the way U , I & Any other practitioner does it today. It's to appease the ignorant
