  • I used a bit of intercoat clear to lock down a couple trouble spots, then I tinted that product with candy dyes to apply a burst to the guitar. Lastly, I clear coated the guitar with a high solids, two part acrylic urethane.
I actually painted this guitar 3 times. The first two times, my paint gun wouldn't atomize the tinted clear, so the color had terrible spatter in it. I bought a cheapo Harbor Freight gun to finish the job... It did fine, but I'll probably never use it again.

Used frogger tape on my fretboard only to have it remove varnish from one fretboard and fibers from another fretboard. Your work looks great!

Oh man. I use 3m tape. It's more $$$, but I've never had it pull a finish off. One ruined paint job will cost WAY more than the $2-3 extra for the tape. That Frog stuff is for the birds. Green 3m is what you want. The yellow is for cars that need to be baked.

That guitar got painted 3 times. My old faithful paint gun puked twice. On a solid color or clear, its no big deal. On a burst or tint, its a strip it and redo. I managed to strip it both times when the paint was still wet... Much easier than sanding it off. Makes you sick to your stomach to quit painting 3 minutes into a paint job... New gun now, no more issues. I can totally understand why a lot of guys don't do finish repairs. They can cost a ton of money when they go wrong.

The kit guitar is looking amazing. The tint component you added to the clear coat looks amazing...just a hint of tint. Nice to get a glimpse of the old KC garage. Rock on, Greg!

It was a bit nostalgic to edit footage from the old shop. It will be fun to see the final video that was shot here in the new shop in Colorado too!!!

Gonna be amazing Greg! I've used Simtec polyester easy sanding sealer and Prestec polyurethane with great results. But the urethane is very thin going on and sags much easier than nitro. Still trying to find something that gives these kinds of results that cures/ hardens quickly but doesn't kill off millions of brain cells. Just don't have that many left!

Yeah. I like their polyester fillers and sealers, but I prefer clears from the automotive world... Probably just more familiar with them... The waterborne stuff isn't as harsh, but it still packs a punch. Good air flow is the key. Thankfully guitars are small... Painting entire cars can really get to you.

What do you use if you want the neck to feel unfinished, like raw, smooth sanded wood? BTW, the music is too loud relative to your voice. Thanks for the vid.

    • @SkyscraperGuitars

If you want an unfinished neck tung oil or BLO are your two best options. Neither will leave you with a sticky mess as long as you wipe on, wipe off. I have a few necks that I have grain filled, sanded to 400 and never top coated. They feel like petrified wood. There's a subtle grain to them, but they're hard as a rock. It's a wonderful feel... I don't think I've felt anything else like that. I would probably only do that with rock maple or something of similar density. I think mahogany would not be good... I've never tried it tho.
