For those of you concerned about the calves weaning:
In order to wean their calves, mother cows will kick their calf in the head when they try to nurse. Hard.
This way is much less injurious to the calves, even if they don't like it.

I bought some weeners at a cattle auction here in Australia the other day and they sound just the same. I keep them in an area away from the adult cattle until they are older. They have a nice green grassed and shady area near my homestead house (ranch) that they can be at as much grass as they like, get fresh clean well water and relax under some big trees. They are very spoilt but lovely calves. I have 9 at the moment. I run beef and dairy cattle here and it is a busy full time job from tending the cattle, milking and looking after the 200,000 acres I have here. We are vaily isolated here and getting the milk out of the vats and onto the buyers is critical as there's a time frame I can hold the milk for before I have to dump it. Its a 7 day a week job and its definitely not for everyone

For example the other hoof had a reddish area kinda in the middle there, how can you tell it's nothing in that case? Or is it that you consider it worth investigating/trimming if it happens to be accompanied by other symptoms (like swelling, etc.)?
