Maybe you can do a video on why Soda companies are still allowed to have a monopoly at restaurants and them parks ? You can by Coke or Pepsi at any Grocery store or corner store but most chain restaurants and them parks you only have one choice and if it's not the choice you like, you're screwed. I am a Pepsi man, (in case you didn't read my other comment here) and hate that I can never enjoy a meal at McDonald's or in any Disney theme parks. I have to leave McDonald's and/or the theme parks in order to get the drink I want, yet, as I said, I can walk into any grocery store, big chain or mom and pop and get either. Why aren't they doing the same to grocery stores et all, I mean if they are allowed to sign deals with restaurants and theme parks, would stand to reason that they would want the same deal with Loblaws or any other big chain store. If the reason is because this would create a monopoly, why is it allowed in restaurants and them parks. I NEED TO KNOW @ Rob Plays ! WHY CAN'T I GET A PEPSI AT MCDONALD OR DISNEY WORLD ? (Edit) Which is why to me, and possibly other Pepsi drinkers ? DISNEY, is not the happiest place on earth, well I shouldn't say that. It's more apt to say that Disney is the happiest place on earth, until I sit and want to have a Pepsi with my meal, unless, I take it into the park with me. Is that allowed ? I know you can buy Pepsi on property outside the parks but I don't remember if one is allowed to bring it into the park ? Especially a bottle of Pepsi ?? Love your videos so far, Keep up the great work !
Dennis Robertson my information isn’t 100% correct but when I worked in food service at Disney we were told that Disney didn’t pay for the fountain drinks at all. Coca Cola provided the syrups for the soda for free in exchange for promotion on the cups that the soda comes in. Like I said this could just be some run of the mill gossip but Coca Cola and Disney are corporate partners so they have an alliance to the company.
7:11 I love how the news article is talking about Jurassic Park while the picture is showing toys based on The Land Before Time (which is also owned by Universal).
@Logan Cascio It's even more interesting when you consider that one of the Disney films that was part of the 10-year McDonald's deal was Dinosaur, which was shamelessly and openly plagiarized from Land Before Time.
HotWax93 100% agree! But every time I bring up this fact, what few fans of Dinosaur there are get all defensive, claiming it was a love story, which was nothing at all like the first Land Before Time. Crazy, right?
Dallin Burnett I was 14 when this came out. There was no connection. Even at Universal parks, when I was there, before and after, there were a few toys, rare, as the JP ride/land did not exist at Orlando, and they mostly just sold merch where there was an attraction involved. The LBT toys, which were also few, mostly existed in the little kiddie Feivel Goes West Land. JP merchandise was sold at the same retailers that stock the merchandise today. Despite being a scary PG13 film, toys were fairly common as they are now, with every film within the franchise. I bought a “Chomper” figurine at the park mostly because that was ONLY LBT merchandise I could find in the entire 90s decade. Felt kinda goofy owning it though, as he, and the million sequels that followed were kinda babyish, and I was a cool hip high schooler 😎
One thing interesting I realize in all of this is the role NICKELODEON had in this rivalry. It seemed that throughout this history whichever fast food chain Disney was partering with, Nickelodeon would heavily partner with its rival. Around 1990, when Disney was still partnering with McDonalds for its promotions, Nickelodeon partnered with Pizza Hut for promotions. This included the original incarnation of Nickelodeon magazine as well as toy tie-ins with Eureka's Castle. Once Disney began partnering with Burger King for promotions, Nickelodeon then begun parterning with McDonalds. This included the "McWorld" campaign with ads heavily shown on Nick as well as some sweepstakes. Once Disney went back to McDonalds later in the 90s, Nickelodeon then went to Burger King as its main fast food promotional partner. This included toys for various Nicktoons (especially Rugrats), the Kids' Choice Awards, and even a Nickelodeon green slime dipping sauce for the chicken tenders. Also don't forget that in 1999, after Disney had already defected to McDonalds was when Burger King had one of its biggest promotional partnerships yet with a kids' property, POKEMON. Along with that, Burger King was also frequently partnerning with Warner Brothers around the late 1990s, with toys for DC Superheroes (particularly Batman and Superman) along with various shows on Kids' WB. It was also around this time that McDonalds partnered with Marvel superheroes for Happy Meal promotions, although this was still over a decade before Disney had bought Marvel. It just goes to show that if a fast food restaurant parters with a property, the rival restaurant will then partner with the rival property.
Rob Plays: McDonalds started its collab with Disney with Splash Mountain in 1989. Roger Rabbit’s McDonalds campaign, a year earlier: *Am I a joke to you?!*
There's no way this isn't connected to Defunctland...right? It's definitely not that I can see the matrix now...right?! *Sees pinned comment* Oh, yeah, no, cool, that's, no, yeah,...cool.
In 1999, Burger King would strike gold with a Pokemon Movie toy tie-in, based on the Nintendo Game Boy Game/trading card game/movie. The Pokeball encapsulating the toys were recalled, as they were a suffocation hazard for very young children, since the ball came in two parts and could easily cover the nostrils and mouth...
Being born in late 93, Im young enough to find the BK partnership surreal, since i only remember the time Disney and McD were synonimous, and essentialy defined my childhood. I can't hate this stuff. And The Lost World in BK is probably one of my earliest memories.
Burger King: I'm outta here! There's plenty of fish in the sea! McDonald's: Did he mean that metaphorically or, uh...? Disney: *shrugs* *Burger King reveals Shark Tale toys.*
Im kimda freaking out rn... That Belle toy... I got it as a kid and I still have it to this very day. Ive always thought I got it from a vhs tape from when it got released but the way that girl put her hand through the doll and used her finger to make it seem likewas moving on its own... I used to do that too. It's kinda freaky to me for some reason
I was the one who showed her this vid because we were talking about it and she showed me that Belle figurine and I was like "that looks familiar..." and showed her this vid. She suddenly had some existential crisis or sorts. It was suddenly funny for both of us.
The only fast food toy I only was really keen on in the day was when McDonald’s sponsored Inspector Gadget. You had to collect I don’t how many pieces to complete the official Inspector. Each one connected to the figure and added another tool/ability for him to have.
Once again, Rob, you didn’t disappoint! Excellent historical perspective and you nailed it! I took my kiddos to the chain that had “the toy’ as incentives! Cheap for this mom, fun for kids. A win, win!
I never did get any of these Happy Meal/Kid's Meals when my family took me to these fast food joints, mostly because I never really asked for them. We were just there for a quick meal, not some cheap toys.
I sure do! I remember my first trip to Disney as a child I was so excited to find out there was a McDonald's at Disney World, looking back I think it's silly as McDonald's is everywhere
My wife and I first visited WDW in 2005. We wouldn't go back until many years later, not because we didn't love it, we just didn't think about it. Fast forward to 2016 we finally went back for our 2 daughters first trip. I fell in love with it and we've been multiple times since. However, the last trip and our upcoming trip this summer just don't seem to be as special. So, I got to wondering why and it made me ask myself why I fell in love with it to begin with. The obvious answer of WDW being amazing wasn't enough, but then I remembered it was this channel. Back when you were still in NY and called it Rob Plays, I absolutely loved your Did you know Disney and historical videos. Your videos were a huge part of why I loved that magical place. When Disney+ relesed The Imagineering Story, I always thought in my mind that Rob had gotten hired by Disney and was behind the scenes of this awesome show. I wish you the best in wherever and whatever you've ended up doing. You certainly made me a huge Disney history fan.
Sega and has a partner ship with mcdonalds Nintendo goes strong with the partner ship with both mcd's and burger king Nickelodeon and viacom still has partner ship with BK and mcd's Disney bought it back with mcd's partnership in 2018 Capcom needs a partnership with only burgerking to release some favourite toys from their favourite capcom games
I remember both the Toy Story, Pinocchio and Hunchback toys! The Toy Story ones were super high quality, man, I miss those days. They cared about actually giving out good stuff. They don't even try now.
Oh My God, I OWNED SO MANY OF THESE TOYS! I was an adult through most of this time period, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVED most of these and, as a college student, a Happy Meal or Kids Meal was about all I could afford for lunch anyway! And a LOT of these were surprisingly decent quality toys, or collectibles (particularly the glasses, as I STILL have two of the Pocohantas glasses somewhere in the back of one of my shelves, 24 years later!)
Burger King may have lost the Disney burger war but they did have sick LOTR cups and I’m pretty sure they were the ones with the golden Pokémon cards in the poke balls.
You know, there's a third variable here--soft-drink sales. Disney, at least in the US, went to an exclusive parks deal with Coca-Cola in 1990. They probably wouldn't have found it as easy to flip between McDonald's and Burger King partnerships if Burger King hadn't also recently flipped from selling Pepsi to Coke. (Though I guess they did deal with Pizza Hut at some point, and Pizza Hut is on team Pepsi.)
Rob, did you make this video because of my comment suggesting the McDonald's/Disney partnership a few weeks back? Fantastic job, by the way. I hope to run into you in the parks when I'm down either late this year or early next.
I love Burger King because of the Disney tie ins. So my favourite fast food company was screwed because some other fast food company who treated Disney badly said they are sorry?! How unfair
$1.99 a toy? I am curious if those toys have appreciated in value since then. only because they are collectables. I also wonder if there will ever be a market for those toys and they value will just keep rising up with time to come
I'm surprised you didn't mention those cups that they sold Holiday season 1994. My dad bought a bunch of them and we still have some of them to this day
Technically the first Disney happy meal/promotion was a set of Disney storybooks from 1987. And there was one Disney parks themed Happy Meal in 2008 before they completely disappeared until 2018.
I'm from Mexico, things went down very different here. While Burger King had kid meals with tom and jerry, m&m's and baywatch Mcdonald's had Mickey Mouse, the hunchback, hercules, pocahontas, and even the 101 dalmatians. Unfortunately, as of now, McDonald's Latin America refuses to pay the proper rights to distribute Disney toys :(
I kinda feel sad for burger king.. always getting screwed over by McDonald's 😅 honestly, I don't like either of these fastfood chains..the food is rather gross I did have a friend who was obsessed with collecting the toys with her mom.. like they ate happy meals every weekend 😰 Though when I was little, my dad used to steal the toy and then save them all to give to me for Christmas.. as little gifts cuz we were poor. Which actually was a pretty good idea 😏 but also a bit mean if you know your suppose to get a toy?
Cool videos about How the mouse and the king team up in fast food toy selling including the Clown of course. Poor BK tho since McDs has won the partnership with Disney.
Great video Rob! I remember going to Burger King as a kid just to get these Disney toys, we weren't generally a Burger King family. They also capitalized when I was in middle school with their big kids meals and boy band toys. Funny to think about after all these years!
so glad I am eating lunch while watching this, otherwise I would be hungry and want to go to Walt Disney World! Now I just want to go to WDW. Thanks, Rob!
You’re right, but the newspaper itself talks about Lost World. I don’t remember these LBT toys, only the Pizza Hut puppets. I don’t remember Lost World either. Maybe my family stopped going after Pocahontas/Toy Story
This switch from McDonald's to Burger King must have been exclusive to North America and maybe a few other countries because in 1995 the Toy Story kids meal toys in Europe were an exclusive to McDonald's NOT Burger King, same with Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre dame and other films cited.
To be fair, as a kid I never had a smartphone nor a computer, but never saw the appeal of playing with toys, and I had quite a few of them. Maybe I lacked imagination back then.
I had fondly memories of going to Burger King to get the latest Disney promotion; Toy Story, Pocahontas, Timon and Pumba the series, Oliver and Company, and Hunchback.
The rerelease of Oliver!!!! Practically the only love that movie got. Sure, they had McDonalds toy when it first came out, but that was basically it. I didn’t even get to see the movie again until it was rereleased. Was it released to home video in 1988? Land Before Time was. Roger Rabbit was ...and 1989s Little Mermaid
Dang, 90s was great time to grow up in ,I remember going to Burger King down the street from my house to get the wild wild West sunglasses then the dragon Ball z statues came with a card , McDonald's with their put together inspector gadget action figure and the Pokemon toys getting a Pokemon with a golden card in it, hit clips, rugrat watches, even the backstreet boys we're selling their CDs at Burger King.
McDonald's: rejects Dick Tracy. Burger King: Accepts Alladin, The Lion King, The hunchback of Notre Dame. “Burger King was more willing to accept anything Disney would push them" Yeah riiight
I remember the Inspector Gadget toys that McDonalds had. Things were crazy for a month while everyone tried to collect all the pieces. I was in Kindergarten, but I remember standing in McDonalds and seeing adults buy a dozen kids meals in order to just get the toy pieces that they needed to complete the full figure. It was a weird cultural phenomenon. Perhaps there might be enough content there for a future video.
I remember BK more growing up for having cool toys.Alf puppets and paper records when I was a kid than Nightmare before Christmas, Anastasia and later Pokemon for my younger sibling
What’s depressing is taking my daughter now to BK. The toys are crap. They have like 4, and the promotion lasts 3 months. There’s also no children for her to play with, and that’s any location I bring her to.
There are rumors that Burger King may team up with Disney once more for the 100th anniversary movie Wish, while my day program crew is a bit surprised by the notion given Disney`s bond with the big M, I`m not ready to debunk it just yet. Besides given Burger King had Disney first, it would sound quite fitting.
I felt that the Burger King toys were better than McDonalds. I also enjoyed Burger Kings additional items you could buy. (Like the LOTR and Star Trek glasses).
Honestly, I love both Mcdonald's and BurgerKing and Disney so I never knew this. I mainly like classic movies but the remakes are okay. I someday wish to visit Disneyworld and Disneyland.
I just wanna see the Hercules commemorative plates I still eat off of today..😂😅 also, there was an ad for supposedly Jurassic Park Lost World, but the toys looked like they were Land Before Time characters. 😋
I came to this video in hopes that I could find some imagery of that stupid Burger King kid with the goggles, because I was half-convinced that I was imagining that ridiculous era of crap in my mind. Thanks for making me feel sane again.
The Burger King toys were such better higher quality than the McDonald's ones. Although I did like the McDonald's little mermaid toys and rescuers down under movie cameras.
Not Disney related but my husband and I ate what felt like a ton of BK's Kids Club Meals in the late 90s to ensure our 2 children got ALL of the Pokemon toys!
If this only half of the story, I feel like I should only leave half of a comment. To see the rest of my comment where I talk about my feelings on fast food and disney, go check out defunctland's video.
I was born in 95 and remember going to burger king as a kid with my family and getting a Randal toy from monsters inc and a fake crystal necklace that lit up to look like the one from Atlantis the lost empire, so it's cool to know the history behind it

I was just over there and now I'm here! love all y'all!

PLEASE continue the story!!! I want to know why Disney didn't renew with 🍟mcdonalds and went to freaking 🥖SUBWAY of all places!!!

I was about to comment that😂
I have a Tupperware somewhere in my parents basement filled with all these cheap toys... i mean history... found in this video.
Disney Dan nice, love your videos!
Same! So many Disney character figurines...

I just came from defunctland! I like how Kevin did McDonald’s and you did bk.
Rob Plays:
McDonalds started its collab with Disney with Splash Mountain in 1989.
Roger Rabbit’s McDonalds campaign, a year earlier:
*Am I a joke to you?!*
There's no way this isn't connected to Defunctland...right? It's definitely not that I can see the matrix now...right?!
*Sees pinned comment* Oh, yeah, no, cool, that's, no, yeah,...cool.
RobPlay subscribers have been begging him for months to do a video on the McDonalds tie ends. Did he finally do it for us, or for Defunctland?
In 1999, Burger King would strike gold with a Pokemon Movie toy tie-in, based on the Nintendo Game Boy Game/trading card game/movie. The Pokeball encapsulating the toys were recalled, as they were a suffocation hazard for very young children, since the ball came in two parts and could easily cover the nostrils and mouth...
I knew you and Kevin liked eachother!
Burger King's Lion King Toys were amazing. My cousin worked for them at the time and hooked me up with all of them.
i love love loooove that you and defunctland are filling in the blanks to eachothers stories!! thank you so much for the amazing new video!
Being born in late 93, Im young enough to find the BK partnership surreal, since i only remember the time Disney and McD were synonimous, and essentialy defined my childhood. I can't hate this stuff.
And The Lost World in BK is probably one of my earliest memories.
I had all of the Beauty and the Beast toys from Burger King. They were surprisingly well made.
That newspaper at 7:11 has land before time characters but says it is promoting jurassic Park the lost world... Interesting
Burger King: I'm outta here! There's plenty of fish in the sea!
McDonald's: Did he mean that metaphorically or, uh...?
Disney: *shrugs*
*Burger King reveals Shark Tale toys.*

This concept is great! You and Kevin covering different aspects of the same story should definitely be done more often!!!
I literally just got alerts from you and Kevin about burger related park content. Weeeeeiiiiird.
Jes Lightning Yeah me too
The only fast food toy I only was really keen on in the day was when McDonald’s sponsored Inspector Gadget. You had to collect I don’t how many pieces to complete the official Inspector. Each one connected to the figure and added another tool/ability for him to have.

Oh my gosh, the Burger King Kids Club! Seeing those characters took me straight back to 1993. I definitely had a crush on Kid Vid when I was about 7.
I had one of those Nightmare Before Christmas watches! No I wasn’t a kid in the 90s. I went to Burger King and bought it for myself when I was 23 🙂
I never did get any of these Happy Meal/Kid's Meals when my family took me to these fast food joints, mostly because I never really asked for them. We were just there for a quick meal, not some cheap toys.
Happy meal toys used to be so cool. But we have to admit, they sometimes cut corners... Like making cups and watches for Jurassic Park.
Who else remembers the big McDonald's at Disney Springs (then Downtown Disney)
I sure do! I remember my first trip to Disney as a child I was so excited to find out there was a McDonald's at Disney World, looking back I think it's silly as McDonald's is everywhere
I went there in my only trip to Disney world.
I too came from Defunctland, and I remember getting notifications that you and Kevin did literally the same topic.
i like seeing 2 connected videos by 2 good disney channels in my subscriptions together.
My wife and I first visited WDW in 2005. We wouldn't go back until many years later, not because we didn't love it, we just didn't think about it. Why did the Orlando Sentinel have a picture of "The Land Before Time" when talking about "The Lost World?"
Universal Dinosaur picture? Its the 90s, so Lost World must be sort for Land Before Time The Mysterious Island. 😏
The contrast between The Rescuers Down Under's animation and the BK promo's animation budget is massive, and all too common in the time.
Rob, did you make this video because of my comment suggesting the McDonald's/Disney partnership a few weeks back? Fantastic job, by the way. I hope to run into you in the parks when I'm down either late this year or early next.

Same!
This just makes me want burger king....
This sounds like a very complicated love triangle
1989: McDonald’s
1991: Burger King
1997: McDonald’s
2007: Subway
Disney with fast food chains
And then 2024 probably back at Burger King again for lion king 30th anniversary...it’s all connected! 😁👍🏻🌟
No 2023 for Wish at BK and maybe Haley
I think Wendy’s should take over Disney toys such as Tarzan and lion king
I remember my dad taking me in his truck to Burger King one evening specifically to get one of those Toy Story Woody dolls... Weird
“And then, I was carried out just LIKE Quasimodo!”
Thank you Lindsay Ellis, for forcing that line into my brain to remain for all time
* Disney screws you over *

WTF McDonalds? You denied us Rocketeer toys!
Great video, Rob! Love the detail to attention -- superb research in all your stuff. You should be a full time pop-culture scholar!
7:10 isnt that The Land Before Time??? Or am I trippin.
You’re right, but the newspaper itself talks about Lost World. I don’t remember these LBT toys, only the Pizza Hut puppets. I don’t remember Lost World either. Maybe my family stopped going after Pocahontas/Toy Story
"Poor Burger King..." He said as he chowed down on a Big Mac.
I remember working at WDW in 99-00, there was a “fries” cart from McDs, next to Splash Mountains. I believe is gone now.
Thanks rob! Your videos are awesome please keep them coming 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
burger king also struck gold with Jurassic park Tie in deal also. The collectors watches in 1997.
Burger King had better Disney tie ins. The puppets for Toy Story and Hunchback were favorites of mine as a kid
Rumor has it that Burger King is partnering up with Disney once more for this holiday season’s release Wish.
Disney AND fast food nostalgia, right up my alley!
In the UK a lot of these movies (Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story and The Lion King for example) did receive McDonald's happy meal toys.
Nappa: Vegeta, how many Burger Kings are there around the world?
Vegeta: IT'S OVER 9000!!!!
Nappa: WHAT 9000?! There's no way that could be right!
The 90s were the best! Nowadays, kids don’t even play with toys, just their parents phones and tablets
To be fair, as a kid I never had a smartphone nor a computer, but never saw the appeal of playing with toys, and I had quite a few of them. Maybe I lacked imagination back then.
So Disney just got with Burger King to make McDonald's jealous?
My coworker buddy which I aptly nickname Elle Woods explained this history to me, and FYI, Nightmare was also promoted at Little Caesars.
This brought back so many memories
McDonald's: rejects Dick Tracy.
Burger King: Accepts Alladin, The Lion King, The hunchback of Notre Dame.
“Burger King was more willing to accept anything Disney would push them"
Yeah riiight
I remember owning a couple of those toys (both Burger King and McDonalds).
Both with toy story and the hunchback Of notre dame
When is the next theme park tube event? I want to see you all and all yall's shenanigans again. Or maybe just a podcast together.
Maybe they'll do it once the BackdoorDisney thing concludes and have something really juicy to talk about.
@@techguypaul I'd be down for that honestly
Just saw that it cost 2.99 for a whopper meal.......man i miss the 90s
I remember the McDonald’s at animal kingdom in the corner of Dino land, of course they had dinosaur nuggets..and of course they were AMAZING
Loved this cross over. Great video !
I just wanna see the Hercules commemorative plates I still eat off of today..😂😅 also, there was an ad for supposedly Jurassic Park Lost World, but the toys looked like they were Land Before Time characters. 😋
I really enjoy your videos. You always have interesting content.
I came to this video in hopes that I could find some imagery of that stupid Burger King kid with the goggles, because I was half-convinced that I was imagining that ridiculous era of crap in my mind.
Thanks for making me feel sane again.
Whoa! I would like to acknowledge the $2.99 Whopper meal deal! Let’s go back to that!
👏🏼 excellent as always!
Bro why did this make me cry
I’m lovin’ it.
Damn. Now I want Burger King
Josh Shaun don’t even try it. It’s not what you remembered
When the word "dissolve" was brought up, I was hoping it would be followed by the simile "dissolve like a McDonald's napkin."
Awesome channel and video
very interesting history. Liked a lot. Thanks
anyone remember when the toy cost more than the meal?
The Burger King toys were such better higher quality than the McDonald's ones. Although I did like the McDonald's little mermaid toys and rescuers down under movie cameras.
I clicked on this video specifically because I remember going to Burger King all the time as a kid for the Toy Story toys.
