    Ataxia is a rare, genetic disorder that is often mistaken for drunkenness, or lack of intelligence. This video spotlights Doctor Aaron Sturrock as he explains Ataxia, how it is inherited, and how the symptoms can affect a person.

    I had forgotten about this video being put up by GenomeBC. Since this was my work, I'll take the time to respond to some of the comments.
    This wasn't 'low budget', this was 'no budget'. It began as a series called "The Hindsight Years", focussing on inspiring people living with Ataxia. The focus was on the people, not fancy effects... just a serious expose. I was trying to get financial support to do more episodes, but the Ataxia community was giving me more resistance than moral support.
    Before giving up on the series, I decided to do this prologue. The goal was to keep it interesting and easily understood by anyone - no big, medical words. And a cheesy cartoon character.

    Thanks for putting out this video - it helps to make some points clearer for me.
    Ataxia does cause pain though as a couple of other people stated; more like an accessory to the fact, than the actual perpetrator. And it can be damn scary when it suddenly comes on again in your forties after years of only severe muscle spasm, migraine variants and autonomic symptoms. Not knowing where your limbs are going in space is a real spin out. Not as bad as neuropathic pain or severe spasms though.

    I can't believe some of the comments from ignorant people like 'Bram van Rooij' & 'Magnus Williamson': But anyways this decease is so sad & not too many people have this decease so there isn't much money put into research to help cure or decline the effects of this. It's a shame with the pharmaceutical companies that if there isn't enough people with a certain condition they won't put money into it or if they can't make enough profit they won't even consider making a medicine for it, or if it is rare & a medicine is made for it, it costs an arm & a leg per say.

    Ataxia does hurt when it causes numerous toe nails that got split from their nail beds, sprained ankles, and one broken toe!

    I was diagnosed with Ataxia type 2 and this is nothing like what i experience. So this guy is talking bout general ataxia but there are many different forms of it. My condition involves un-coordination and vertigo, almost like chronic dizziness associated with nystagmus and other eye symptoms including convulsive like attacks. Does it hurt? Hell yeah it does.

      Artimes X is there a way we can share emails privately. I was diagnosed with EA2 in November and it's all new to me and although there is info out there it's been so overwhelming because there are so many different symptoms. Mine are exactly like yours. My thing with my eyes was reported to be nystagmus. Just would like someone to have to share info with and know what's steps and meds your on etc.

      @Artimes. 7 лет назад

      Sure i wouldn't mind that at all. I know how isolating it must feel to have a rare condition like this and no one to share stories or discuss bout it. It's deffinitly alot more confortable to converse with others that share your same disability. Only thing is, how would i contact you, i was going to send you a PM on your channel but it looks like you don't have any where i can message you. I was going to send you my email. or if you have "skype" i use that as well. Please let me know.

    • @krazeelety

      Same here. Can't figure out a way to pm you as well. I don't do Facebook or I'd suggest that route. Let me think on it and I'll get back to you if I figure out some way.

      Well my youtube channel has a message ME link on it. If you just click on "About" tab and then click on message me, you should be able to send me a personalized PM. I also do have some social gatherings and groups that i talk to on the internet, but mostly involving games and things of that nature. Not sure how you feel bout that. Other wise you can just PM me on my youtube channel.

    As for Ataxia causing pain, I also disagree with the doctor. As a person living with Friedreich's Ataxia, there are very few days where I DON'T have pain. However, doctors explain that differently; they would say that Ataxia causes symptoms, and the symptoms cause pain.
    I have severe back pain, but the doctor mentality would say, "the back pain is caused by scoliosis. The scoliosis is caused by Ataxia. Therefore, the pain is not a direct result of Ataxia".
    Semantics.

  • @lotusflwr62

    i DO NOT AGREE ABOUT IT NOT HURTING. I suppose it depends on the cause of ataxia. I have ALS 4 with a cerebellar ataxia overlap and I have chronic severe neurogenic pain.
