- If you didn't already know it, Opel has the same parent company as Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler. Also part of the giant international conglomerate is Peugeot. That's important because this German hatch/crossover/SUV thing has a 300 horsepower plug in hybrid system that would be perfect for America. Seriously. The Opel Grandland GSe has a strange name, but a hybrid system that delivers impressive smoothness, solid AWD capability, 40+ MPG when treated right and 30+ real world miles of range. We don't know what's in store for the next generation Jeep Cherokee or Jeep Compass, but we DO know that the next compact SUVs in the American lineup will be related to the next generation of Opel, Peugeot and Fiat SUVs (just to name a few). As someone from Europe, you dont really want to do anything with peugeot gas engines (and a the 1.6 in this, peugeot and bmw made it in a cooperation more then a decade ago, bmw fans call it a peugeot engine, peugeot people point at bmw... carbon builds up like no tomorrow, it got better with years, but long way from perfect ). Opel matrix headlights are great that is true.
Opel mateix headlights are great for non premium car, their comfort seats and basically that's it. Also literally the only 2 things Opel engeeners were allowed to develop on their own while they were under GM. Beside the 1.6l issues there's a 1.2 with a belt in oil and battery problems on C5 aircross. Not sure of it happens with other stellantis models but I would guess so since everything is shared.
I am surprised Alex does not mention the other Stellantis PHEVs here: Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet. They seem to be pretty similar in terms of size, power, drivetrain and EV range.
Indeed but Tonale and Hornet's PHEV system is different, developed in the FCA era. This one is coming from PSA (Peugeot-Citroën that bought Opel from GM). Potentially this system or an evolution of it will come to the US with Jeep and others.
to answer one of your questions I think it should be branded a chrysler, they could even keep most of all the same body panels that way, as I can’t see many people would think a jeep badge should be on something that doesn’t have a mechanical 4x4 system.

Great video and thanks for the recommendation to choose plug in option at the rental company!! I wanna check out some other European brands that doesn’t make it to the US like Renault, Peugeot or Citroen.

Alex, Thanks for taking us along for the trip. I believe Europe's Corolla Touring Sports with the 1.8 powertrain would have raised your mpg to something like 50 while providing comparable cargo and passenger space as well as a smoother ride. 🤔

I think the point is being missed. A plug in hybrid and a regular hybrid are meant for two different types of shoppers, two different types of daily commutes, two different types of driving. I had a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid that I would plug in and I would mitigate my gasoline usage by charging and driving about 80% of my daily commute on electricity, the other 20% I would get about 25 mpg, it wasn’t the 25 mpg I was focused on, it was the 33-35 miles of electric driving that costed me far less than the same mileage on gasoline. A non plug in hybrid vehicle typically is far more efficient but isn’t as cheap to drive if you have the opportunity to charge frequently between stops.

Prices in Europe include sales tax (around 20%).
That ICE still looks like it's very related to the Mini N14/N18 engine. Hopefully they've managed to fix the issues known to plague older Mini's by now.

I averaged 44MPG in the Cupra Formentor I rented when I was there in October. Mostly highway driving but plenty of hills and curved roads.
Interesting how the button bank under the touchscreen, climate controls and and the buttons in front of the shifter still look very Buick to me.
Stellantis should stop production of Hornet and use that plant to build RAV4 Prime for Toyota...win-win for both.
I think this powertrain is a solid bet for the next gen Jeep Compass. There isn’t likely to be a next gen Cherokee, but Compass will move up in size a bit to fill the space
I'd guess that if the Compass will come as a PHEV, it will have the exact same powertrain that Alfa Romeo and Dodge use in the Tonale/Hornet. I'm not sure if cost saving/cutting would be a factor though, as this PHEV system is already in use in several cars in Europe.

I think Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler all need something lol. They are all hollowed husks of brands.
Edit: I disgaree with the headlight statement. I just see more nonsense that can break. Lots of these brands cant even make a engine work properly after so many years. Its a pipe dream thinking motors in their headlights could work. Plus those led lights have been out for over a deacde now. Some are starting to fail and the entire assembly needs to be replaced. Heard it can cost 1000 on the extreme end. The economy is in the gutter. Dont need to add even more costs to consumers.

I can see a price of 38.390€ incl tax, brand new, from an official German Opel dealer. Msrp is 59.850€ incl tax and some extras, but nobody will ever pay this😉

It's a good-looking CUV...or is it a hatchback? Hard to tell with some of these vehicles nowadays. Europe gets so many more, and in my opinion, better, small vehicles than we do in the USA. You brought your camera person on a family vacation?
Interesting. Seems like the closest NA competition would be a Ford Escape, Niro or maybe Tucson / Sportage PHEVs. Is this Opel really that much better than any of those?

The North American equivalent of this is the new PHEV Dodge Hornet right? I heard it's even manufactured in Italy..
I think the Hornet is slightly bigger than this.
The Hornet is unrelated oddly enough. The next generation of all these products will have common platforms but for now the Hornet uses a totally different hybrid system
Really a pretty looking vehicle in terms of exterior styling and wheels; seating options aren't the best and lots of plastic on the interior. When you say "miles per gallon" assuming you're converting the liters to US Gallon or Imperial Gallon?

Mennekes receptacle for J3400 will make it a lot easier for EU public charging equipment to be adapted for deployment in North America
Seems to me that Dodge should have used this car for the Hornet rather than a terrible compass plate form with a hybrid system less efficient than what is used in the Pacifica.

Jeep has been overpricing their lineup and offering huge incentives. Are they out of their mind?
Stellantis really needs to do something with Dodge and Chrysler. As it is, the future of these two brands are up in the air and unknown. Marchionne really wrecked these two brands with his shuffling models around and canceling others.

Would definitely be low hanging fruit for them to bring to the US, and probably should have been what they brought instead of the one that Alfa designed for the Tonale.
I won't hold my breath on all these auto makers getting together and having the same charging system. I'm still waiting for the local Tesla charger station to open up the chargers to everyone. They added additional units and have tape around them still.

It used to be, but Alex explains the change right at the beginning of the video.
It was from 1929 to 2017 when GM sold off the Opel/Vauxhaull company to PSA which then merged into what became Stellantis. To some extent, I think that's really why GM discontinued most of their cars in favor of trucks & SUVs, because all of the better cars were designed by the Opel business unit - like nearly every Cadillac and Buick since the 1990s.
Those neighborhood streets look more like Latin America than First World.

I love that European cars don’t have orange lights near the headlights. We need to remove that from our laws US. The orange color is just awful on many car colors.
As are red signal lights on rear. There should only be orange turn signals.
A hybrid EV system designed by the French sold by Italians Nope.
They are completely okay to drive less than 12k miles per year for a normal European driver, that include vacations… in the states we cover much more mileage, hence larger vehicle, larger engines etc…
Airbus aircraft involve a lot of French and Italian engineering and they have turned out fine
the only reason this exists are lower taxes in some EU countries, no one buys these (insanely overpriced) they are fleet lasing vehicles
