Campers are so innovative. Such as using items that have a dual purpose. Learning how to pack and fit a square peg into a round hole to make it all fit. I've been camping for 3 years now and find the true campers are the nicest people you will meet. I enjoy watching your videos like this to see how others do it and get ideas. I love my suburban camper. It’s awesome. Bed , rack , shower, awning with a tent, a refrigerator/freezer, two solar gens, and Mosquito netting . The whole slide out kitchen thing. I cannot state how happy I am I did it. I’ve a camper trailer to match, but I find I don’t use it so much due to the burb being able to go where no trailer can.

BTW, When using the screens that stretch over a window, place strong magnets along the bottom to keep mosquitos out. I didn’t even get noseeums this way last summer. Pull it down ONTO the door.

Planter boxes!! GENIUS! I’ve been searching for something like that and have only looked at expensive fancy boxes at department stores. I’m stopping at the garden center next chance I get. Thanks for this tour.
At 1:31 in I decided to search for a Z71 4x4 to buy and I'm picking it up tomorrow ! 2011 Tahoe Z71 4x4...$13k. Going to spend more on fuel but its bigger, more comfortable than what I was going to buy for half the price. I wanted a capable 4x4 big enough to sleep inside with a large dog.

I love it. I’ve had my 96’ Suburban XL for about 8 yrs now. Same interior, same tires. I’ve upgraded the tranny and transfer case. Wanting to drop a Gen 3 motor in it when 9k drops in my lap. I have tried camping out of mine in multiple, removable, configurations. And I just can’t sleep in it for more than a night or two. And my Mr Buddy heater doesn’t like to work in it. So I have outfitted it with a pop up, and a queen sized cot tent. In winter I take my kerosene heater, tarp off the wind sides and I’m good to go. I could walk out right now and leave in it, and not need civilization for as long as I have fuel. I really want to put a good push bumper on it with a winch. Want to bed-line it, probably in the next few months. 10x10 rip stop tarp…I need to get some conduit to do a cover off the side. Like yours it a work in progress. 😁. Cool set up. Great video
I do want to do a slide out that can accommodate my gun cases and double as a kitchen counter top. Trying to figure that out while keeping my back seats in place. I think I got it figured, but worst case I’ll have to drop them.
Thomas, I have seen some ideas here that I haven't elsewhere! Thanks. Interesting one loop curtain using paperclips! Fascinating! And plant window boxes:) Awesome 2x4 on a hinge for the plywood floor platform! He's got some great and simple ideas here. Metal kegs of water! and holding up platform. I am curious about the water containers. How do they open and close and not leak? I have arthritis and things are hard for me to open....
Triple wall insulated sort of chimney to go out the window when using a wood stove inside!... So intriguing. I think I would use something else under the heat shield on the floor? Asbestos - is that still allowed? Ceramic would probably heat up, may need air space under???? Sure glad he has a fire extinguisher. Whew. Lots of ingenuity here. (I think he must be using the small instead of large winner well wood stove, but I may be wrong)
Hi Susan, The kegs have a screw on lid with a rubber seal. They wont leak and don't have to be very tight to create a good seal.

Use your Shepard's ax/cane for pulling stuff from far back . We keep a how in the back of our truck to pull things forward, but for economy if use you already have something and can give it another use. Nice setup.
Ha! I had the same idea after the video was shot! So far I have never needed to retrieve the deepest containers. that stuff is for breakdowns, so happy thing there!
Thanks for this tour, Tristan. I wish I had seen it in 2020 when I built out my 2017 suburban. I purchased my suburban with the idea that I would drive it to sub Overland and have Grady do his complete package on it, however they would not touch it since it has side airbags. I was disappointed and proceeded with my own build. I had purchased a lot of camping equipment including a cool ARB awning that extended out the back of the suburban. It took up too much room. I cannot imagine him putting a woodstove in his suburban. That seems dangerous and it would get very hot.
I took early retirement during Covid and was planning to live in my suburban full-time. That lasted only a few weeks. I have a senior greyhound with me and it was just too tight and uncomfortable. When I got to Nevada, I purchased a 20 foot travel trailer . I like my showers and space I get out of this 20 foot travel trailer. I got rid of the suburban this year, traded it on a F250 pick-up truck. I might add a truck camper to the back of it and venture out again, leaving my travel trailer in storage here at the RV park. But right now with gas prices are high and traveling being expensive, I have a good deal here in Pahrump at an RV park plugged in.
I made this offer before, you’re welcome to come spend the night or two if you need a break from the road!
Hi Bob, I know I'm literally playing with fire so I'm taking many precautions. I'll have 2 fire extinguishers and maintain a strict limit on how much wood goes in. I haven't decided for sure to actually put it in the camper, I may do a tent extension off the back instead. Look at "Lone wolf 902" videos, you might get some crazy ideas for your F250 truck bed! Awesome interview! I'm getting a kindred spirit vibe from this fine fellow. The Suburban is an awesome car camping/overlanding rig and its got enough space to bring along a nice wood stove and a sweet keg set up for enjoying a quality bev while relaxing by the wood stove fire in the wild. This man has tapped into living the good life. Hehe

8:42 I recall some reviews of vehicles they had a "plywood sheet test". They reported on whether the cargo area accomodated a sheet of plywood. It's that important to prospective vehicle buyers. That size is also about the same as a twin bed. So, nice for moving day.
Great ideas. A real "no build build:. There's always room for future mods. I don't know about a wood fire inside the SUV though.
Suggestion. Have TWO fire extinguishers. "two is one. one is none". Also, having them stored in two locations means if a fire prevents reaching one, the other location may be accessible.
2 extinguishers! good idea! I have not yet found the courage to burn the wood stove in the Suburban yet. I get the inspiration from RUclipsr Lonewolf 902 who camps in hot tents and has rigged a wood stove in his camping vehicle.
@@thomasjackson1690 Yes I've seen several RUclips campers with wood stoves in tents. Some places though, taking wood from the ecosystem is determentale. Not like pioneer days anymore. A diesel heater makes a lot more sense in a vehicle.

I've heated our house for 25 years with wood and used a small wood burning stove in the wall tent while camping and I gotta tell ya , that setup he has for the wood burner inside the Suburban is VERY scary !!! Hope nothing happens to him .
Disapprove of the wood burner stove being used inside a vehicle, too. However, liked the interior hanging wraparound privacy curtain, a variation should work inside my lil' 2-door Wrangler (rear seat removed).
What is the issue with the stove? Is it too hard to reliably keep the stove heat from setting things on fire, or the danger of flaming logs accidentally falling out?
@@jwagnermail Heat source is too close to exposed flammables, i.e.: plastics, vinyl, cloth, etc. I could see an errant burning ember easily setting the vehicle on fire.
I know, right? The whole wood stove idea would never have occurred to me if I hadn't seen it on Lonewolf 902 RUclips videos. At first, I thought he was crazy but over time...
@@thomasjackson1690 wolf has his stove in the rear of the pickup with a cap, better setup, seems safer than right behind the front seat.
Outstanding tour Thomas! You presented your SUV very well. You sure have put a lot thought into your rig. Your simple solutions to many challenges and installs are great. Lots of ideas here for others to learn off of. I checked out your wood stove online and it certainly is an interesting approach to what you are trying to accomplish. Every little detail and even a reason for everything what a great set up simple all the bases covered I like the idea of a few small containers of water over a big one
Excellent tour, lots of great ideas to make it all useful and practical. One small suggestion, take a look at the material they use in a fireplace, it's sort of a sheet masonry that shields the area surrounding the fire box. You might want to create your heatshield out of that rather than the metal heatshield, especially on the bottom. Overtime plywood dries out and eventually under the right conditions can ignite from temperature alone, the masonry might offer additional protection. Be safe and enjoy your adventures. Great set up.
Thank you for the added material type ideas. I am testing all kinds of ways to make it safer like different fireproof materials different chimney configurations and how much or little fuel to put in the stove at any one time.
@@thomasjackson1690 cement board would be great under the stove. Make it big enough that if anything falls out , it doesn't catch anything on fire.

Heat transfer through metal so even the short legs will most likely transfer heat , how much depends on heat inside stove. Tom will need a fire pad like the ones under grills or a fire blanket pad.

I agree with the comments about the wood burning stove inside. While sailboats and some vans have them, all that I have seen are permanent installations that are properly shielded. If you go forward with this, PLEASE be sure you have functional CO2 detectors.

Awesome Rig! I love my ‘04 burb LS 2wd. It’s got 192k on it and still running strong. I have zero desire to sell it and get something new. It fits every need of mine. I’ll be putting a couple grand in it over the next year to get it tip top but that sure beats buying a newer one! One day I will turn it into a camper!

I like the kegs for water !! I don’t like drinking out of plastic, gives water a funny tasted.
Since you took the spare from the bottom.... You have space to build a steel frame under there to mount the air compressor, generator, water tanks, but more of a permanent type installation

Tom did a great job keeping it simple and reliable without breaking the bank. I'm always into seeing Tahoe / Suburban setups, as we've had a few. Great rigs! Those mattresses are very nice too. Super comfy! We ran the exact same stuff from Joanne's in our Outback and in the truck bed before getting a camper. I hope you're enjoying yourself wherever you are Tristan!

Thomas has a really nice setup . Suburbans of that vintage are in my opinion one of the best trucks GM ever built. The front bumper and winch got me thinking that I want one of those. Thanks for the link. You mentioned that you had an adventure in Nevada with your transfer case on the Yukon. I think it was at the start of this trip. Are you going to tell that story .
We've had a few Tahoe's / Suburban's over the years and one thing that happens is the transfer case solenoid can go out, keeping you from being able to shift from 2h, 4h, and 4l. But they're awesome rigs for the most part.

You should make a portable v wall out of cement board with pebbles tiled onto it for a heat protector. I think I would feel safer that way. Better than hot metal that could fall against your seat or door.

Love the wood stove and the shielding looks good, but I would get some kind of insulation to put between the shield back and the seat back. Just saying...

I would not use the same shield for a grease splash-guard and then a heat shield. The grease will burst into flame before anything else!

Very nice. But if full time, what I'd do is pull a short trailer, 8-15 ft or so, with a Suburban or
shorter Yukon and leave it in base camp to go exploring the more inaccessible areas for the day. With the option of camping in it overnight if too far from basecamp.
He goes camping in it but doesn't live in it full-time.
Oh, you have a little dog like me! I call mine "Tex". It wouldn't be that bad for me full time. You always think to yourself, what if I lost my home? could I survive in this thing? I have a back packing background and just car camping is a comparative luxury. I can bring everything! Cast iron! Beer! Books like Walden! Yea, I'll get by.
He might want to consider a heat shield on the ceiling of his rig as well.
I have a small wood stove in my house. I couldn’t imagine having a woodstove in a car you would be so hot. There are times I have to leave the room that the stove is on because I am just sweating

I don't like my spare under the floor because you might find it difficult to get at in deep mud, snow, rocks or what ever.

The manual for my Jackery 500 doesn't say that it will harm the battery life by using pass-through charging. I sure hope it doesn't because that will be what I'll be doing on the daily!
I found it in the FAQ section of my instructions.

Excellent, you covered most everything, except the one question I have. Does having your rear hatch open drain your battery? How do we get around that?
Funny you should ask. I actually drained my battery the morning of the video and Tristan had to jump start my rig. There is a dome light shutoff button near the headlight controls on my vehicle. I forgot it was there and didn't notice my lights were on.
For Subarus, yoy can insert a flat edged caribeaner into the hatch latch that turns off the "door open" indicator on my 2015 Crosstrek, it also turns off the lights that shine back on the newer models. I saw a youtube video on it. I will add the link in a reply to this comment.
ALSO, please everyone buy one of those portable battery packs that will jump your car without the need of a second vehicle!!! $50ish bucks at Costco or on Amazon. It saved me while boondocked out east of Albuquerque last year.

I sure wouldn’t risk having an a flame inside - the Buddy or the wood stove. All the bedding is too close to it. I’d be super nervous about the risk. It’s good he’s testing at home before putting it into practice. Anybody else have the same concern?
