I find it interesting that Mark reckons all the characters are unlikable, because I thought Ralph Fiennes was genuinely delightful. He's non-stop, *almost* to the point of becoming annoying, but there's enough humanity there to see him as more than just a dancing idiot. And the very last shot of Dakota Johnson crying on the plane made me instantly forget how annoying she was previously, as she was now just a teenage girl without a father.
It has moments of brilliance and Fiennes absolutely shines, but the themes are all over the place and the drama never really gets anywhere. Should've ended about 20 earlier.
i genuinely loved this film... at least until fiennes' character's death, there was interesting moments after that but i found that event incredulous and didn't see the point, or enjoy the inevitable change of tone or the way events unfolded afterwards. but i found everything until that moment charming, fascinating and compelling, even if the main characters were all undeniably obnoxious at times
Just watched this. And I agree, I feel like there was no point to what happened to Fiennes character, unless it was to prove that rich people can get away with murder. But I think it was doing something more interesting up until then. It’s a good film. But god I hate these European bourgeois bohème intellectual classes.
Matthias Schoenaerts and Tilda Swinton played sorta likeable characters, even if they don’t say too much. But the humor is definitely found in how annoying Ralph Fiennes and Dakato Johnson get.
Can't say I liked 'A Bigger Splash'. The plot was threadbare, the characters were two-dimensional and annoying; and what was it with the completely pointless nudity? The best thing about it was that it's tempo chivvied the thing along at a reasonable pace so that it didn't bore, but I certainly couldn't recommend it. The 'La Piscine remake', should have had the plug pulled on it. 2/5
Funny.. agree with this review. The characters were irritating. But the film worked. The camera work was great and well produced. Thought the 2 communists could have had a bigger role to make the story more rounded..
+Martin T. The Thing (2011) wasn't really a remake, even though they tried hard to pretend it wasn't. It was a shame they sold out and ditched the practical effects. ADI wasn't too plussed about that. Otherwise it could have been a decent prequel.
@@carsonwhaley4935 Indeed. The usual quality of remakes had me worried but the Suspiria remake was brilliant. And what I loved about it was that it was totally different from the original but just as good.
What an odd remake of a classic film. I'd say less of a remake and more of a reworking of some of the same themes that doesn’t really know where it's going or why it's doing what it is. Good actors, though.

he is a child but he's a good character

I just wanted to keep watching the movie when the clip ended.
I really enjoyed it!x
Kermode swings! He misses.
It reminded me of stealing beauty. It depicts a European way of life that I will never experience

"A Bigger Splash" is on nearly everyone's top films of 2016 list, but OK.
it's reflective of the freedom of the island

WHAT!? You can't remake Suspiria!!!
+Martin T. Actually, I've heard the Evil Dead remake is supposed to be pretty good.
+0=Axel=0 Evil Dead remake isn't great.

+Man Beadle Of course the early 80s "The Thing" was itself a remake of the original 1950s version.
I think the director probably saw sexy beast before directing this.
+killboy101000 They both have tanned British people in.
why? they have nothing in common with it
I disagree. The Ralph Fiennes character is obnoxious but the rest of the cast are sympathetic
A remake of Suspiria? Why would anybody even attempt? Just to annoy us?
And it actually turned out good

terrible film... Incredible kermode didn't mention the bigoted portrayal of Italians as stupid child people but I suppose he is English.
I think the directors Italian
'stupid child people'? nope.
