I swear I've watched it like a 100 times!@ love this horse!! He was smaller then the other horses and was 31 lengths behind and a gelding!! He still won! Amazing
Reminded me of Bob Meyer calling an Open at YR: "And as they come to the wire it's Doc's Fella and Millers Scout...Doc's Fella and Millers Scout...Millers Scout and Doc's Fell-E RACER IN FRONT!!"
He actually makes first reference to Mine that Bird at 1:06 saying " Well beyond the rest of them" implying last place! This race is truly inspirational!
One of the best Derby's I've seen in years. Loved seeing those Western Cowboy hats in the winner's circle and finding out the trainer is from Bloomfield, CO, an hour from my hometown, Durango, CO. Exciting stuff!! Especially when the announcer didn't even say which horse was coming on to take the lead till he had it by several lengths. Amazing jockey too!!! LOVE IT
It was the fact that MTB was a couple of lengths ahead before Durkin even NOTICED he was in the lead that is so hard to fathom.."That is, uhh,Mine That Bird...." I've seen announcers even in routine races become so focused on the favorites , they lose sight (literally) of other horses.
I heard three separate calls of this race - Durkin's, the track announcer (I think), and a local radio guy who's no amateur at calling races; they all did this.
every time i watch this video it is amazing the distance this horse makes up from the first turn to the finish. truly amazing horse with the perfect jockey for this ride!
Seriously one of the best races i've seen. As cool as it was to watch Big Brown's race last year, this was even more amazing. Here here for my old kentucky home!
+schum256 - it was 25:17, his slowest of the race other than his preceding quarter. SB Nation has Derby stats from 1980 to 2011; MTB's splits fit in well with those of other winners. His strong late drive illustrates, for me at least, the fact that the Thoroughbred industry has been churning out many more speed horses than distance runners over the past - ? few decades, perhaps? - I'm no expert. The horses out in front had to be *very* tired, it seems to me. I'll probably never understand what "tells" a jockey when he "has plenty of horse," and when he needs to slow the pace, if he's able to, to conserve his horse's energy.
Actually, 25.17 is the difference of when Join in the Dance hit the 1/4 pole, and Mine That Bird finished, he was still multiple lengths behind at the 1/4 pole, and isn't it usually about 4-5 lengths a second??
This horse has inspired me a lot. It tells me I can still catch up with others if I devote all myself in the matter, even though I've fallen behind so much. And it's a pity that MTB haven't done well in recent races, especially in Breeder's Cup Classic 2009 when he only finished 9th. I hope he can do better in the future.
Never was into horse racing but i am from New Mexico and this was all over the News over here, I cant believe he pulled ahead by that far its just amazing!!
One of the greatest race ever visually(along with Frankel`s many,,Arazi in Breeders Cup and Shergar in the English Derby) and a wonderful story fit for a film; the winner having to drive in horsebox for several days. However, the real accolade should go to the commentator for the worst commentary ever in the history of racing. Surely there isn't a worse one, is there????
that commentator sucked, he could have really had a special moment but the movie portrayed everyone against Mine that Bird, I dont usually watch horse racing so i never saw the actual race til today.........i do remember at the time hearing about a Gelding winning
I always cheer for the underdog. Tears come to my eyes every time I see the Bird go from last by several lengths to winning by several lengths. Greatness on display here.
its amazing how different horse racing looks on tv, i've only seen a light work in person, but it looks much faster than this! (hope that doesnt sound rude in anyway, i think it would be so amazing to see this in person, it would probobly look like supperrrspeed :D
This win makes me cry. But horse racing is a cruel business (not a sport) and its not a happy lot to be born a thoroughbred. Most thoroughbreds (70+% of the foal crop in any given year) will eventually go to slaughter - Ferdinand and Exceller are prime examples. Racing is about money and exploiting athletes and it's shameful. I own an OTTB because she almost shipped to slaughter. I bought her to save her.
I agree. Horse racing can be very cruel. Horses die every day from being run to hard. As a horse lover when I see things like that it just makes me SICK! Who, who in their right mind would kill a horse to race it? You may not even win. Is it for the fun? I'm not sure.. I hate horse racing, though. Crops, whips, abuse.
If you hate horse racing so much, then why even bother watching it? While it is terrible for any horse to go to slaughter, Thoroughbreds are by far the minority. Their numbers should continue to decrease since the foal crop sizes have dropped vastly. The current crop of 3yos is approximately 25,000, less than half of what it was in the late 80s. The majority are horses sent to slaughter are Quarter Horses, since there are approximately 150,000 registered each year, and foals that are the results of backyard breeders. Sure some horses slip through the cracks but far less than used to. As sad as the deaths of Exceller and Ferdinand were, their deaths have brought about positive changes. Most stallions sold to other countries now have clauses included in their sales contracts that say the horse will be shipped back to the US upon retirement or pensioning from stud duties. Exceller was owned by an evil man. People tried to save him, including the farm where he was standing but the man refused to let him live. Its hard to blame a whole industry for some bad apples. Many tracks have instituted rules to ban trainers and owners who sell horses to slaughter. As for the whips, there are rules for use and misuse. A jockey will be suspended and fined for misuse. Racing is a business and a sport. So as with any business, it is about money. But there are far more good people in the industry than there are bad ones.
Fay Fisher You do not know what you are talking about. In any given year 20+% of the horses that go to slaughter are thoroughbreds. And, 70% of the foal crop of all thoroughbreds eventually go to slaughter. Considering that the numbers that are going to slaughter have not decreased, these are very significant numbers and indicate that thoroughbreds remain a part of the overbreeding circumstance (human greed drives this machine, dontcha know). It ain't grand to be born a TB. And, yes, I did rescue one from slaughter.
***** Hi there. I am quite well versed on the sad state of affairs when it comes to the world of the thoroughbred. There are too many TBS, and it is the fault of humans who breed irresponsibly. Surely you have heard of the expression that "it takes ten foals to get three good ones." The seven that don't make the cut are doomed a little sooner and a little more completely than their theoretically more desirable counterparts. Racing is the soft white underbelly of the horse world.
New movie called "50 to 1" about Mine That Bird is filming in New Mexico right now! :) Stars Skeet Ulrich and Christian Kane. Skeet plays trainer Chip Woolley.
wow great job bud! Way to take it down a notch when everyone was so excited about this. Just to let YOU know...for most horse racing fans its not about the preakness. Its about this wonderful feat he accomplished here. He will always be rememebered for THIS race....not the preakness. Ass
Just heard the same This American Life podcast, paused it to come here. Now I need to watch Secretariat at the Belmont before going back to Ira. Cheers Squid!
What a great run! what a move to the rail on the end of the final turn. it opened up perfectly! To see that move was unbelieveable at that distance to have that burst! Caught the announcer totally by surprise! Too bad NBC's coverage is so shoddy. They cover such a great even with just 4 cameras, none on the back stretch. A pacing camera, like the 1 NBC invented for track meets, from the final turn down to the finish would have caught this awesome move by an incredible longshot to win!
A bit of trivia. Mine That Bird's margin of victory, 6 3/4 lengths, was the longest in this race since Assault won it by 8 in 1946 - tying with Whirlaway and two other horses for the longest margin in Derby history. Or what Tom Durkin would call Kentucky Der history. [Sorry, Tom! ; ) ]
Incredible: @1:26 he's dead last @1:36 he's moving up, now check it @1:39 he passes 4 @1:44 he's hugging the inside rail @1:45 is the killer move, he zooms outside that horse and right back to the inside @1:49 phenomenal awareness/strength @1:52 he's aligned with leaders @1:53 he leads @1:54 he breaks @1:56 length and a half in front @1:58 two lengths @2:01 three lengths ahead, FIRST mention of his name @ 2:04 he's won...whew! talk about heart, I hope he's rested enough to go all the way!
What makes Secretariat's run in the KD is not just that he had the fastest KD in history..but that he started in LAST position & then set the track record by increasing his speed the entire race from the OUTSIDE of the track. When he won, only 1 horse was within 10 lengths of him. Sham set the 2nd, now 3rd, fastest KD time in history. Sec's speed is unimaginable. He is the ONLY athlete in the world's history to INCREASE his speed throughout an entire race to set a record. No human ever has.
One of the best races of all time - from dead last to first. I love how the guy calling the race did not even see Mine That Bird coming up along the rail until he was well past the final turn. What a payoff!
I absolutely loved this Derby. Not sure what everyone is complaining about. I've been to the last 7 and this was easily the 2nd best I've attended. Great atmosphere!! Maybe i'm biased though. Maybe I put my bet on #8 to win bc I thought "51-1 odds, what the hell?!" and won a couple grand. :o) A guy in the box next us put 100$ on Mine That Bird to win. he walked out over 5K richer!!
Hello back to New Mexico -I love it - it's wonderful to see a horse come out of nowhere and prove they are a champion to the world - great horse and thank goodness he got the perfect rider in Calvin
I agree, it seems that with the slight pause prior to announcing the horses name he had to pause and look for the name! What an incredible race it was!
It's the best when a long shot like Mine that Bird win the Derby. It shows that its not all about money...its about heart. That horse has heart. And the owner only paid $10,000 for that horse! Amazing. Truly amazing.
i was there and it was such an amazing race! that jockey could not stop smiling. It was so cool to be there to see such an amazing race. when they passed us on the 1st turn i thought he had no chance, but then again who could have guessed? :)
So crazy that this 50-1 horse not only won the Kentucky Derby, but also finished in the money in all three triple crown races. It's pretty rare for any horse to do that! Also, the jockey that won the Derby with Mine That Bird actually won the Preakness on another horse, who knows, if he stuck with Mine That Bird its possible he wins the Preakness too!
Fabulous! This guy rode the horse like a winner because he knows how to get IN--in to the zone and become of CONSCIOUSNESS the way a Natural can. He becomes other than himself and brings the horse with him from that place of utter assuredness. This is what the fold call a whisperer. What a great movie this would be done from this perspective of KNOWING what can BE done when one gets into the place of fearlessness even if they know not what they do!!!
I remember this race clearly. As I had absolutely no idea who ANY of the horses were, I figured it was Pioneerof the Nile in the lead, but then he started calling Mine That Bird, and I was like,"Oh. Well, go Mine That Bird!" lol I didn't want Pioneer to win anyway because he was one of the favorites. Hope you have a great and relaxing retirement Mine That Bird!
I love horses man. Such srtong animals. Ive had two horses from off the track. both winners. and they give soo much.. most loyal horses ive ever had they dont give up one bit... and they make great jumpers!! :)
Greatest move in the history of horse racing, the way Calvin Borrel took Mind That Bird to the rail and blew away the field. The annoucer was oblivious to the amazing move.
Amazing! A true underdog story. With the economy the way it is it kind of reminded me of Seabiscuit and his Racing fame in the Great Depression. An awesome race.
@Kulaness: Why don't you get a microphone and a camera and video tape a conversation with a bunch of race horses and ask them then, hmm!? I think that should settle it!
Tom Durkin made up for this "missed" call by making a brilliant race call in the following Preakness (2009) Stakes, which in my opinion is one of the most exciting race calls ever. You can't blame Durkin too much for this call because he was following the front end of the race and MTB appeared out of nowhere from last place...Durkin had to pause and think for the name of the horse because he had been completely out of the race just moments before. Durkin is still the best race caller.
The little guy won. He didn't have the attention of anyone until he was a couple of lengths ahead of the pack. Bad track? Credit the jockey for his skill and experience. At the end of the race, there was one undisputed champion. Whether or not Mine That Bird ever races again is unimportant. It's the American Dream at it's finest and we should all celebrate that. The race was the stuff dreams are made of, and the most dramatic finish I have ever seen. Bravo!
MTB had lost 31 of his last 32 races. The newspapers were telling the horse to just stay in the stables. MTB was the longest long shot in the Kentucky Derby in over a century. P.S. I don't know anything about horse racing, just heard about this race on a radio show and wanted to see it.
Calvin won the day before on Rachel Alexandra in the Fillies race and came back day two on a 50-1 long shot and won the dang race. One of of not the best jockey today. That dude knows his rides and how to get them to perform. On top of that, an all around nice guy. Way to go Cal.
Yes, the announcer totally blew the call. He was excitedly proclaiming Pioneer of the Nile as Mine that Bird took the lead. Maybe he wasn't even watching. My guess is with those odds, most announcers wouldn't have know who he was either. To come from so far down to pass the entire field so quickly, this is a horse with a HUGE heart and a genius of a rider.
Everyone should watch that movie 50 to 1 it's awesome cowboy movie with mind that bird
Mine that Bird not Mind

I swear I've watched it like a 100 times!@ love this horse!! He was smaller then the other horses and was 31 lengths behind and a gelding!! He still won! Amazing
The aerial shot of this race is amazing. To see this horse just cut through the field. speechless!!! RESPECT.
First time ever I've seen Tom Durkin rattled and blow a race call! Wow.
Reminded me of Bob Meyer calling an Open at YR: "And as they come to the wire it's Doc's Fella and Millers Scout...Doc's Fella and Millers Scout...Millers Scout and Doc's Fell-E RACER IN FRONT!!"
One of the worst calls I've ever seen, but it sort of makes the entire race even better.
Incredible run! He expoded in the stretch with such speed that the veteran announcer didn't even realize what horse had just rocketed to the lead!
His great run reminds me of Smarty Jones' runs a few years ago. Smarty missed the triple crown by a close margin. What an exciting horse.
He actually makes first reference to Mine that Bird at 1:06 saying " Well beyond the rest of them" implying last place! This race is truly inspirational!
I get goosebumps everytime I watch this. It's amazing.

Best race I've ever saw!

this left me breathless when i first watched it on tv. my jaw dropped. this is the greatest 2 minutes in sports history!

So glad they made a movie about this horse!
I'm proud to be from Kentucky! We live in a great state with wonderful people, places, and things to do and see!!
209(sad sad creatures) are lost as to what a work-of-art this race was...pure perfection---watch M.T.B. cut like an NFL tailback: damn....
Watching this always gets me going!
What an amazing race!!
Great upset, and thanks for posting this video, I wasn't able to watch it live...!
my favorite horse of all time
Seriously one of the best races i've seen. As cool as it was to watch Big Brown's race last year, this was even more amazing. Here here for my old kentucky home!

This never gets old!!!
Best "worst" call in the history of the Derby. :)
duchessedepeluches he was dead last and there’s to many horses to follow .. I get how he missed him
he calls 'now mine that bird takes the lead'and hes 20 metres in front with 10 to go
I love the way the announcer did not even see him coming ,that little gelding has the heart of a Champion that is what makes this sport so great
God, that was SO funny!! "Uh... Mine That Bird.." HAHAHA!!
That was AMAZING! Mine That Bird wasn't barely even mentioned at all until that lasy stretch O:
Best race ever.
I wonder what his final 1/4 was, it had to have been fairly quick, not secretariat's 23 flat, but probably 23 something.
+schum256 - it was 25:17, his slowest of the race other than his preceding quarter. SB Nation has Derby stats from 1980 to 2011; MTB's splits fit in well with those of other winners. This horse has inspired me a lot. It tells me I can still catch up with others if I devote all myself in the matter, even though I've fallen behind so much. @Skofstad Skofstad, you may be right.
Way to go Calvin...again! All your fans back home here in Louisiana are proud!
Terrible call. How could you be calling the 2nd horse, 4 lengths back, still the leader.
I can see why Durkin was fired.
Exactly
Due to illness, I believe?
He still does it for the track, but not NBC.
thanks.
+K Billy Who is the horse in second?
Can not wait!!! This is one of the best Kentucky Derbys EVER!!

Me too, $10 on him cause he was a mudder, the only one I saw who had onlw on mud. How could people miss that fact?
He came out of gate 8 - and hung back until the far turn coming down the stretch - what a game little man! I loved it!

Amazing! A true underdog story. With the economy the way it is it kind of reminded me of Seabiscuit and his Racing fame in the Great Depression. An awesome race.
I totally agree. Durkin is, by far, the best in the game. Did he miss this call: yes. But he's still the best in the game.
Bravo!
Its amazing how they are running their hardest and they just look like their in an easy lope. Racehorses are amazing.
1.-copy and paste
2.-paste it in 2 different videos
3.. hold breath for 10 secs
4.- look at your hand
God I love this race. I didn't even notice the little guy sneaking up and blasting forward till he was already gone.
Wow, you are exactly right. You wouldn't have know Mint That Bird was even in the race until about 3 seconds before the race was over.
Check out the beginning of the race, he was in last place, and he just turned it up at the end, incredible.
Way to go Cal.
woooohoooo! Bird is a local horse! so glad to see it win in such an amazing fashion
