Noise (engl. für „Geräusch“, „Krach“, „Lärm“) bezeichnet ein Musik(sub)genre, das klassische Elemente der Musik wie den reinen Ton oder den Klang weitgehend bis vollständig durch Geräusche ersetzt. Damit einher geht meist der Verzicht auf Strukturen wie Melodien oder, je nach Interpret, mehr oder weniger auch auf Rhythmus.
Der wörtlichen Übersetzung ungeachtet ist Noise nicht unmittelbar mit den klassischen Geräuschmusiken wie dem Bruitismus oder der Musique concrète verwandt, deren jeweiliger Ausgangspunkt echte Geräusche wie Eisenbahnen, Motorengeräusche waren, die arrangiert und häufig mit klassischen Instrumenten kombiniert wurden. Insbesondere im Bruitismus wurden die Geräusche zusätzlich auch weniger ob einer musikalischen Qualität gewählt, sondern hatten eine programmatische Bedeutung, da sie auf Fortschrittssymbole wie Lokomotiven, Automobile, Maschinen und Ähnliches verwiesen.
Noise hingegen arbeitet meist mit abstraktem Geräusch, das nur selten referenziert. Fast allen Noise-Musikern ist das Bestreben eigen, das verwendete Instrumentarium bzw. Schallereignis in seinem typischen Klang zum Verschwinden zu bringen (Whitehouse verwendeten z. B. anfangs defekte oder extrem übersteuerte Synthesizer). Viele Bands und Musiker begannen zwar noch mit einem klassischen Rock-Band-Instrumentarium, das sie stark verfremdet gebrauchten, stellten aber in den frühen 1980er Jahren auf Synthesizer und in den 1990er Jahren auf Computer um. Entscheidend dafür war nicht nur allein eine größere Freiheit bei der Geräuscherzeugung, sondern vor allem die Möglichkeit, extrem kompakte und dichte Geräusche zu erzeugen, regelrechte Walls of Sound (deutsch: „Klangmauern“); die erzeugten Geräusche sollen „nicht nur das Ohr, sondern den gesamten Körper“ angreifen und den Hörer traumatisieren.[1] Daneben existiert eine Strömung von Noise-Musikern, die es aus unterschiedlichen Gründen (z. B. DIY-Ethos) ablehnen, moderne Geräte zu verwenden.
Noise intendiert in seiner Anlage somit weniger ein klassisch musikkompositorisches Muster, als eher eine Art Klangbildhauerei.
