Hello Sidney, thank you very much for your video! I have a doubt left. Why do you use video levels for HDR and full levels for SDR? I'm working with an LG C3 and I think full levels for both works fine if I enter that information on the TV.
Awesome video Sidney. I just wanted to point out a few omissions in your video. 1. I guess you are a PC guy but I didn’t notice any mention that Calman software only runs on Windows x86 and most Mac users are now running on Apple Silicon ARM chips. Hello Barry, I am 100% a PC guy. The discontinuation of boot camp due to the move to ARM chips was unfortunate; however, I do not tend to cater to Mac OS with my audience when it comes to grading. I have slightly explained these sentiments in my review of my M1 MacBook Air and have somewhat expanded on them to include the M2 chips as well. Perhaps the M3 chips or the new Mac Pro would change my mind, but the potential price point of that machine leaves me on the fence. Regarding DeckLink cards, all Blackmagic Design I/O products work with most standard NLEs, including DeckLink cards, regardless of the user's operating system. That being said, I believe it's important to differentiate the audience that will be researching things on RUclips versus a dedicated post house. I believe that if you're searching for how to use a TV as a mastering display for color instead of a dedicated industry-preferred mastering display designed to CIE and SMPTE standards, price is probably the biggest factor. Therefore, I am hesitant to recommend a $1,000+ monitoring device when, for most people, a DeckLink solution with an external PCIe solution will be fine and also cheaper. Dedicated post houses tend to use those devices for more than just a clean feed output as well. With that, I believe this is simply a glimpse into the struggles of being an educator, especially on a platform dedicated to somewhat shorter-form content. It's impossible to cater to everyone, and we tend to rely on what we feel will be best for the audience we have designed the video for. Furthermore, it's impossible to speak to everyone, so I am thankful that we have a comments section where things like this can be discussed.
Thanks for this very thorough tutorial! I've followed this and some of your other suggested videos in the description and I can't figure out why the internal pattern generator on my 2023 C3 won't display. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I really do not want to setup a rasberry pi pattern generator. Was really hoping this would do the trick. Am I missing something? 1. Got the service remote and set up the "secret menu" properly 2. Connected TV via ethernet to the same network as my windows computer running Calman LG Home. 3. Turn off all additional menu options like AI and anything auto. 4. Setup Calman Home LG exactly as you did in the video. But no patterns are appearing except for in the pattern generator pop up windows inside windows. What am I doing wrong? thanks for any help!
I think there is a missed opportunity here to discuss how to actually calibrate. No mention of meter profiling or metamerism. Remember that D65 on an OLED will not perceptually look like D65 so you'll need a custom white point when calibrating. Also the color meter is simply estimating tristimulus values from a measurement of reflectance and converting those into chromaticity co-ordinates, as opposed to measuring the absolute power distribution of the light source. This is why some sort of spectro device is necessary to profile your meter when properly calibrating a display for professional use.
Hey Sam. I appricate your comment, but want to adjust your thinking just a little on the purpose of this video. First thought, the D65 white point is actually a custom coordinate on the calibration software as compared to the exact D65 chromaticity x,y value. Second, we have to keep the audience in mind when looking at RUclips content. Color calibration of displays is a rabbit hole in and of itself. You also have different groups of people within our industry with different mindsets with respect to color calibration. You have some artist who will calibrate Rec 709 for about 1-2hours, and others like me that will calibrate for 28 hours. The point is, this isn't a video dedicated to color calibration: it's a video about using the C1 OLED. If there are people who are more color perfectionist, like yourself, I expect that they will use their knowledge to add to the process that I have given. Furthermore, if we are getting that deep into color calibration philosophy, we probably wouldn't be using a C1 as a mastering display, when it can't even hit 1000 nits for HDR. What I will not do is overload our lowest common dominator with information that is only going to make a tiny perceivable difference. That's the balancing act one must have as an educator, especially when we don't know where everyone is at in their career.
Hi Sidney, thanks for the awesome tutorial video! Question, I got a C2 and a calibrite ColorChecker display plus. In Calman, under FIND METER where you have (LCD) LED WHITE WIDE GAMUT, I don't have that option. Which of the following should I use for my Oled. 1) OLED RGB, 2) OLED TV WRGB, 3) LCD CCFL Wide Gamut, 4) RAW XYZ generic CMF? Plenty of other options but that seems to be the closest to what I should select if I'm not mistaken.
Thoughts on the LG Oled a2? And would i need the service remote for that one? I am still new to this and on a budget. I am looking for a good clean feed monitor i can color grade off for weddings. I do have the sypder calibrator tool. Just looking for something That will work but will not break the bank.
I'm curious if you have any tips for getting into HDR? I have my LG C1 Oled which while not perfect can be used for HDR grading in some scenarios. Curious if you have any tips for getting started in that world, it does seem a bit different from SDR. I know you need to be in DCI-P3 or Rec2020 and in some nit level of the STR gamma. I don't currently have an IO device, I will be getting one for my new main monitor upgrade in the near future. My OLED is just used a client display, so it's connected directly to my Mac via thunderbolt 3 to HDMI. How it would be best to watch HDR content that I grade? Upload to RUclips and then watch it there since they now support HDR video? Also on Mac there are is an option to allow HDR for displays that support it. When I turn this on the LG turns on HDR mode, so I assume this should stay on when working in HDR, and off when in SDR. Thanks!
Thank you very much for this calibration tutorial for the LG C2, I already subscribed, do you know by any chance if as of November 2023, the LG C3 auto-dimming firmware "repair" is good enough for doing a complete calibration as you are showing here? And if not, are there any proofs to access the "secret" menu on the LG C3 model? Thanks again!
Hello! Amazing tutorial! Been considering getting the C1 for grading at home vs the studio. My question is, could you replace the Decklink for an Ultrastudio for using with a Macbook pro and still have the different ports configuration for SDR and HDR?

I have a LG C8, but it cannot save the calibrations (I think), and I have been recommended the CX onwards. There are a lot more used CX's for sale around my area than later models. Cheers

Hi Sidney, how are you. About the C-2, I understand there is an update to fix the auto dimming (even though its still not the best), my question is, will it still be able to turn off auto dimming with the service remote, or is that not possible anymore after the update?
I would like to use one of the HDMI ports from the tv to connect my pc by video card out to the tv for regular monitor use for Lightroom photo editing when not using deck link for video color grading. How would you calibrate this for photo editing through calman?
Great videoSidney! Liked / Subscribed! I really needed a detailed description like this for my 48" LG OLED C1 to make it a reference monitor for Resolve Studio. I have all the setup you referenced except for the LG software (I have the new Calibrite Profiler and the spectrometer. The only issue with your instructions is that the Calman LG Home software is PC-only and I am on a Macbook Pro M2 Max. Any suggestions Sidney? Thank you in advance :)
Very helpful, thank you! But, I own a C2 "42 and still have questions, as do others. First, is the internal pattern generator useable yet? There was a firmware update in the beginning of 2023, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully using it yet. Second, you mention in a comment below that the Calman software offers a pattern generator. But that is a $1500 option, which is more than the TV, Calman Home, and the X-rite combined. Is that the best option? Third, Calman Studio allows you to use Davinci Resolve's pattern generator. Do you think that is a good option?
The cheapest pro option, is a HDfury Integral, but I'm not sure about which model, as they keep making new models, and Calman doesn't update their website. But it's only around $2-300. I believe you also need a Raspberry Pi 4 B, with the free PGenerator. In fact, if you don't need HDR calibration, the Raspberry Pi will do the job on its own. All this is explained on the AVS forum, under the "Display Calibration" thread.
@@akyhne yea i'm aware of the AVS forum thread and Raspberry Pi method. But I was hoping they would fix the internal generator issue quickly, since that seems much easier. I'll check out the HDFury, thanks.
@@LaplantFilm Not sure. On their we page, it says "Calibration support Internal and connected external Monitors". So in theory, you could connect a TV, as the external monitor. But under "add-ons", it doesn't list Calman Home. Only the pro versions.
You are a great! I have a Decklink Monitor 4k and although I set both the card, the timeline, the monitoring, the output, my reference monitor LG CX set to fullscreen 'eats' a bit of pixels on the sides. I also tried with other monitors but same situation. everything ok if instead I raise the resolution of the input of the card, but in practice I see the output of the small video in the center. Suggestions?
I'd recommend sticking with the DeckLink cards , simply because that's what I have experience with, and you have more flexibility. Also, yes you will need a PCIE enclosure since most mac's don't allow access to those slots.
Thank you for this video brother, truly appreciate you for doing this very helpful. I have a question , why is it that you need a blackmagic ultradeck or an ultrastudio. Wouldn't it be enough if you calibrate your c2 tv with calman an the x-rite calibrator and then use the video clean feed feature inside da vinci to output the image to the tv? I work on mac so i have the use mac color profile tuned on .
Because we want to bypass the computers color management settings. Calman also doesn't work with the computers color management either, it works with a built in pattern generator and those colors are calibrated to the color space. Using computers color management will give you different results than to what you calibrated in
It is. There is a risk of burn in if you turn it off. Anecdotally, I've seen several YT videos where the presenter left a non-moving signal for a long time with no issue beyond needing to turn it off then back on.

Thanks for sharing this video. I have a mac studio and i'm looking to switch to resolve. How can this display work with the Mac Studio...It doesn't allow you to open it up to add additional graphics cards etc
No, you need a colorimeter. But there are cheaper options, such as the i1display, and the Datacolor Spyder 5. But they are only accurate to near 1000 nits, which for the C1 & C2 is of course adequate. I'd go for the X-Rite (Colorite) option, because they are a bit better quality (and I own it 😅)
Hey Jason! Thanks for the comment. I’ve stated this else where but I chose the enclosure solution because it offers 4K at a reasonable price point. The ultra studio mini is 1080p and the ultra studio 4K is about $1000
Hi Sidney, thank you for the very valuable information. I have a question, there is a new update for the c3 which fixes the auto dimming, but it also means you cannot turn it off anymore. Is this a good or bad thing for colorists.
I’m on the fence about the C3 and G3, I feel like LG burned it’s creators with that decision. I can understand switching the panel type, I don’t understand taking away the ability to change auto dimming
@@sidneybakergreen they say they fixed the auto-dimming, if that is true then its a good thing, but if its not totally what we as colorists need then its a real bad thing. Would you suggest to better get the LG C2?
Great Video! Thank you! Is there a reason not to use the "Calibrate Profiler" software which comes with the (X-Rite) Display Pro colorimeter instead of purchasing the Calman software? Both will be using the same colorimeter. Any settings I can update to have it output what the timeline is ? I called Blackmagic Design and they said they would get back to me... They have not yet 😞
Thanks for the video! It looks like in the C3 we will no longer need to go to the service menu as the new firmware will automaticallly deal with the auto-dimming issues. Yaaaay :)
Did they talk about how they’re going to accomplish this? I would be concerned about any auto dimming even if it is a a nuisance? 🤔 Does it disable it when you decide to calibrate in a creator mode or something?
In the secret menu for programming the HDMI ports, is there a reason you select rec.2020 rather than the P3 option in the colorimetry section when programming for P3?
Rec 2020 has the better colorimetry. You can always select P3 in the mastering color mode and then calibrate to P3, and use a Rec 2020 P3 Limited output colorspace in resolve.

Sidney, Love your content. I may have missed it, is there a good option for cal with a Mac? Stoked to get my new LG OLED rolling, but alas, I'm Windowsless...
LG's are a bit tricky to calibrate. The internal LUT won't cut it if you want RGB Full Range. Video range is fine with the internal LUT, otherwise you'll need to load it in an external LUT box.
@@ACreations891 LG's internal LUT is designed to work for YCbCr Video/Legal Range (16-235). When you wanna calibrate but you have RGB Full Range signal, the internal pipeline tries to make the LUT to fit in the full scale (0-255), and that's resulting on quantisation errors. It's not bit perfect. Therefore if you're watching movies, or you are not feeding the TV RGB Full Range signal it's fine. In case you're feeding the TV RGB Full Range signal, and you have a LUT loaded, then the output is not bit perfect anymore.
@@nimrod7785 When you say internal LUT, do you mean the stock standard LUTs? If you use Calman to upload your own LUT does that work around the issue you're talking about? I don't plan to do that though, I plan to use HCFR to create a LUT then I use Resolve to apply the LUT before it gets to the TV. (Meaning it'd only work when I'm in Resolve via Decklink, but I'm ok with that)
@@ACreations891 There is no standard LUT uploaded, it's unity or null by default. I am talking about the LUTs you upload and the software doesn't matter. The TV's pipeline has the issue.

Hi you just said we can avoid the risk of burning. How is that we should go ahead using it. Do that I can use the TV for long term.

I have a Decklink Monitor 4k and although I set both the card, the timeline, the monitoring, the output, my reference monitor LG CX set to fullscreen 'eats' a bit of pixels on the sides. Can i consider this pc for video editing, or will it suffer from sceen burns?
thanks for the video Sidney, what about using a Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Monitor 3G? do you really need a enclosure if working on a mac?
I'd recommend sticking with the DeckLink cards , simply because that's what I have experience with, and you have more flexibility. Also, yes you will need a PCIE enclosure since most mac's don't allow access to those slots.
Also, the Monitor 3G maxes out at 1080p.

Using computers color management will give you different results than to what you calibrated in
i loce your video, im thinking of buying the c2, just wondering. Isnt the autodimming there for protection? what risk is there in turning it off?
It is. There is a risk of burn in if you turn it off. Anecdotally, I've seen several YT videos where the presenter left a non-moving signal for a long time with no issue beyond needing to turn it off then back on.
Even if I were to delivery in SDR is it ok to monitor it with the LG with an ODT of Rec2020 or how should I do it?

Hi Sidney can I ask you a question about Calman software??
Can I use it to calibrate my c1 without using display pro just connecting the TV
No, you need a colorimeter. But there are cheaper options, such as the i1display, and the Datacolor Spyder 5. But they are only accurate to near 1000 nits, which for the C1 & C2 is of course adequate.
I'd go for the X-Rite (Colorite) option, because they are a bit better quality (and I own it 😅)
You can also use a Blackmagic Ultra Studio..no enclosure needed
Hey Jason! Thanks for the comment. I’ve stated this else where but I chose the enclosure solution because it offers 4K at a reasonable price point. The ultra studio mini is 1080p and the ultra studio 4K is about $1000
@Sidney Baker-Green yes I know.

Note that I'm a novice thinking of getting an LG C3 or C4 to use as my computer monitor so that I can use Davinci Resolve for editing and colour grading etc, and I already have the Calibrate (X-Rite) Display Pro colorimeter.

3D LUT Capabilities: The Teranex Mini supports 33-point 3D LUTs, which are commonly used in the film industry for precise color grading and calibration. It allows users to load two independent 3D LUTs simultaneously and switch between them easily via the front panel. This flexibility is beneficial for different monitoring scenarios or color correction needs.
Calibration Support: The device can connect to third-party calibration probes (like SpectraCal C6 or X-Rite i1 Display Pro) to automatically generate 3D LUTs based on the calibration of the connected display. This feature ensures that the output is color-accurate, which is crucial for professional HDR workflows.
File Format Compatibility: The 3D LUTs use standard file formats, allowing users to load LUTs generated by software such as DaVinci Resolve, facilitating seamless integration into existing workflows.
Monitoring Features: It includes on-screen scopes for real-time monitoring, which enhances the ability to evaluate and adjust color grading accurately during production.

@@BenjaminAllenEdwards I've been getting asked this for a minute and it just now crossed my mind lol
LG's are a bit tricky to calibrate. The internal LUT won't cut it if you want RGB Full Range. Video range is fine with the internal LUT, otherwise you'll need to load it in an external LUT box.
Could you please give a bit more info on this? What exactly are the limitations and can Resolve just send out a LUTed signal to the TV instead?
I would like to hear more too.
Whatever LUT you upload it with CalMan or ColorSpace or whatever will have the same problem.
