Hardly anyone ever catches the newspaper headline in the opening scene “Attorney Christopher Chambers fatally stabbed in restaurant” that grown up Gordon is holding in his opening narration. The movie gives you the ending at the very beginning if you’re paying attention. Great story and great screen adaptation.
The movie was released in August 1986. All of the main actors became famous: -Wil Wheaton in the tv series Star Trek:The Next Generation -River Phoenix, (older brother of Joaquin) a major celebrity of the 80’s and 90’s and tragic victim of the drug scene, could have had a great acting career -Kiefer Sutherland, (son of Donald) starred in many tv series and films -Corey Feldman and Jerry O’Connell, both well-known in numerous tv series and films -John Cusak, (brother of Joan) starred in many films, plus as a screenwriter, has received many awards -Richard Dreyfuss, already an Oscar winner when this was made, starred in many major Hollywood classics (Jaws.)
All 4 of the kids were fantastic. Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton and Jerry O'Connell had good careers and are still acting. River Pheonix was destined for greatness before his tragic death. John Cusack and Kiefer Sutherland are household names.
I think one of the things I like most about this film is how ones perspective on it changes over time. For those of us who first saw it as kids you mostly just see it as a fun adventure. When you see it later in life, however, it really does call upon you to remember with nostalgia that coming of age period in your own life. The friendships you had, the experiences you shared, and how they continue to influence the person you've become..... such a great film.
In the book, Gordie's brother enlisted in the army, and died in a jeep crash (an army jeep) during training. They never spelled that out in the movie. Ace is a lot of things, but he isn't responsible for Denny's death.
Apparently in the book it's explained that Denny died in an "army" jeep accident. BUT It's always stood out to me that when Ace says Gordie must have some of his "brothers good sense" he never says anything negative about Denny. As crazy and crude as Ace is, this speaks volumes of the impression a type of person like Denny has on people. He's respected at the very least by even the town bully! Great reaction guys
I always felt bad for Teddy. His father was a hero at Normandy but suffers from PTSD, thus his violent outbursts. It wasn’t understood back in the 50s.
Chris' death is what reminded him of the story. That was from the paper at the beginning. Fantastic coming of age story. I never get tired of seeing it
The actor the plays "Chris" was the one and only River Phoenix!!! He was an amazing young actor back then but sadly died of an drug overdose at age 23 🥺😭😭😭
The movie told you in the first scene that Chris was dead. It is the set-up for the whole movie. I love this movie: it’s so well done and hugely nostalgic for me. I grew up in the sixties, in the eastern U.S., but the music, the kids, and their hijinks are exactly right. This is how it was. We never went on an overnight adventure like that, but we played in the woods and went on 5-mile bike rides starting at age 10. It was a different world. The bridge incident really gets me. We had a trestle, only about 50 yards long, but our big dare was to climb down the wooden girders and hold on as a freight train passed overhead. Sometimes they could be 100 cars. I showed this movie to my daughter when she was about 12, telling her, “This shows the true spirit of boys at that age.”
That was my world too, 1960s....Me and my brother would be gone all day long on our bikes, off somewhere doing something. Our parents trusted us and didn't worry. I mean 10, 12 years old
I was 12 when this movie came out in the 80’s, and I could really relate to this movie, times were still innocent back then all all of those songs were still on the radio. I had friends just like that
the wise kid: river phoenix, man...legend...river & keanu reeves came up together...river was in some dope films as an adult too, & yeah, as someone else said, juakim phoenix's *older* brother....at first i didnt think much of jaukim because he such big shoes to fill in river's shadow, but damn, i love him now...hes soulful as hell just like his big brother, he made river proud
This one is from the same Stephen King book as Shawshank, a collection of four stories called Different Seasons. It was fun to rewatch this with you. Thanks for sharing it!
We '80s kids knew Will Wheaton from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but this film really showed his acting chops! River Phoenix played young Indiana Jones at the beginning of The Last Crusade. Sadly, he died of a drug overdose in the early '90s, leaving a James Dean-like legacy because of his great promise as an actor. If he had lived, I have no doubt that he would have achieved similar recognition to his brother, Joaquin.
Charlie Sheen???!!! 😂😂😂 That's Corey Feldman. This movie came out in 1986, Charlie Sheen was a teenager actor at the time but he didn't act in this movie.
Yeah, Gordie could be seen as Stephen King's alter ego. He's said that the novella contains many autobiographical elements. The scene with the leeches was based on an actual childhood event, for instance. When Teddy is complaining about the end of Gordie's story, it might be a tongue-in-cheek reference to how some critics felt that Stephen King's stories tended to have weak endings. Thanks for checking out this great coming-of-age film!
@@OliverandKylie , many authors do that, kerouac did nothing but that...songwriters do it, painters insert themselves into scenes & portraits, like picasso did...anyway, great reaction:)
In the book Gordy is the only one who lives past his early 20’s. It gave more significance the coin toss at the Junk Yard. All the guys got the crap kicked out of them by Ace’s gang in the weeks after the the adventure. Gordy saw Ace as an older man, he was a fat factory worker in station wagon with a Regan bumper sticker.
Since others have already answered so many questions, I'll just say that I enjoyed the reaction! Oh, and Charlie Sheen was 21 years old when this movie came out (he's one year older than John Cusack). Sheen was in 'Platoon' the year this came out, 'Wall Street' the following year, and 'Young Guns' & 'Eight Men Out' the year after that.
Yes, jerks like that were more common back then. They got away with it more often. No cameras anywhere, and the older generation thought that learning how to deal with bullies was a part of growing up. You wouldn't get expelled from school over a fight, so you were expected to fight back and stand up for yourself. They called it "building character." It's one reason I started martial arts classes as a teenager. Now, as a father to two grown children, I'm very happy that my kids didn't have to deal with this kind mental and physical abuse on a daily basis.
Young Gordy, played by Will Wheaton was a regular on TV series "Star Trek next Generation" and most recently played himself in the TV series "Big Bang Theory".
When Gordy is telling the story about the pie eating contest the kid in the crowd that says, "Hey lard ass, how was your trip?" Is O.B. Babbs. He had some small roles in a few other things. Most of the movie is filmed near Eugene, Oregon. He went to a high school in the suburbs, Pleasant Hill. He was on their basketball team that my alma mater played in the state playoffs in 1988. I didn't know at that time that he was in the movie Stand By Me.
Me and my girlfriend just started watching you guys, new fans. Just find it amusing we have an almost identical book collection 😂 But about this movie: I actually grew up about 5 miles from where the "castle rock" town is. In real life it's called Brownsville Oregon, they do a festival for the movie every year and the town is pretty much the same as it was then. At least main Street. It's one of my favorite movies of alllll time, maybe due to a little bit of bias but God I love this movie. ❤
The one with the glasses is Cory Feldman, went up to become a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (voice), young Richard Dreyfuss went on to Star Trek, and Chris Chamber's went on to be Indiana Jones and die very young. His brother is Joaquin Phoenix.
I ANWSyS thought Ace had something to do with Denny dying!! Finally!!! Someone else said it !! I Thought his comment about his brother having sense was a morbid sounding comment . RIP River Phoenix.. You were always Amazing !
I never thought there a reaction about this movie, this movie is one of my favourite during my childhood era,my story quite same as this,it just our group little bit bigger around 14-18 person, went do same thing like that, suck by leeches, swallowing bugs, mosquito bite are normal among us,climbing trees, hiking, fishing, many more, eventhough we all broke we happy we share that time, what i remember most during lunch everbody brings a plate of food from their house, some walking some riding bicycle, sharing eating together under shady tree, remembering those memory made me cry nowadays not just it hard to find those day todays but thinking there also someone we know who is no longer around us..that why this movie is so close to me..
I wonder if I notice on my first watch so so many years ago (most overlook that scene but I've seen reactors read it outloud & not make the connection when they are introduced to chris chambers)
The grocer tried to short change Gordy in the book, but Gordy called him on it. He also told grocer he saw he had placed thumb on scale as well. Gordy said he was basically a sick bastard for trying to cheat a kid. Grocer became very angry he was not as sneaky as he thought he was, and Gordy was too smart for him.
I always thought the scene where Ace played chicken with the truck was a precursor to the scene a bit later when they had the altercation and he had a gun pulled on him. You’re left to think that he wasn’t going to back down , even with the gun pointed at him , and you assume that scene was going to end a lot worse than it did.
Movie Trivia: At the end, you see older Gordie, writing in what looks like a really fine house-----During the credit roll, you see him through the window, running around crazy with the kids----the OPPOSITE of his own father's "parenting style".....
long live River Phoenix, he was just too good to not die young...keiffer sutherland & river ohoenix were both guitar players & one day on set they were trying to figure out the chords to ben e. kings song "stand by me" & they did it & played it a lot & the director , rob reiner, decided to name the movie after the classic song....also, buddy holly music, always a good soundtrack choice....also, this movie got tons of middle school students in 1987 smoking cigarettes, lol
One of the best coming of age movies ever. This story, "The Body" and "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" are both from the same collection, "Different Seasons". I won't rag on you for not recognizing 80s child actors. I could, but I already read the comments above. Get a few more of these classics under your belt and you'll be fine. "Goonies" is a great place to start.

River OD'd Young at Johnny Depp's club in LA. And Gordy is Wil Wheaton he just did real good on the celebrity Jeopardy game show. You kids are young😊
Yea solid big three of King's works for sure. For me, I can't go any less than a big five of his, by adding in The Shining and Carrie to the three you mentioned. Maybe you'll have them in the tank if he rolls back into the picture On a related note, I think Stephen King deserves a lifetime achievement Oscar strictly on the amount of his works adapted to the big screen. A premier writer for decades, his recognition by the Academy is well past due
10:52 This movie was set in 1959, I was the same age as these kids in 1977 and all though it was 18 years later the kids acted about the same. We were always outside without parental supervision. We had a lot of fun but we played hard, sometimes caused trouble or got into fights and if we happened to run into a group of older kids most likely they were going to hassle us or push us around. That was just the way it was but we had thick skin and learned how to deal with adversity. The problem with young people now is that they spend their time indoors staring at phones and have never learned how to deal with adversity so the instant something doesn't go their way they implode or if someone gives them a hard time they want to shoot them! You want a 12 year old to shoot a teenager dead because he pushed him around a little bit and took his hat?
No lamb basting here kiddo. Enough of that in this mean ass ole world today. Enjoy the Journey of great films..and if you don't, so shall I. Sincerely, Old Guy. 😁👍💯
Stephen KIng is a master at writing great characters. Love this movie so much. Thanks for reacting to all these Stephen King adaptations. Looking forward to the next reaction. Great stuff ahead.
If you want to know what happened to Ace, read the book NEEDFUL THINGS. Denny was in the army when he was killed in a jeep accident. Something in the book but not the movie.
Ace, Kieffer Sutherland, this was a preview of him as Jack in awesome series 24. Chris, is even better older in Running on Empty, bmneed to watch it. And 24!
Enjoyed your reaction guys. Keep going. River Phoenix played Chris and he does more good acting in a movie called "The Mosquito Coast" which also stars Harrison Ford. You would like it.
river phoenix, chris, died at 23, absolute legend, so many good films he was in even dying that young....corey feldman, teddy, many great, goated 80's films as a kid actor, gooneis, lost boys, the burbs, now hes kind of a washed up kook, but he survived hollywood back then, itd traumatize & make anyone slightly insane.....will wheaton, gordy, didnt do much else after stand by me but has many guest apperances in the big bang theory tv show....jerry mcdonald, vern, hes done a bunch of stuff since , disappeared as kid actor & re-emerged a decade and a half later as a new thing, a handsome grown man actor & not a fat kid anymore....i cant remeber the stuff he was in, quite a bit tho...then the great jon kusack, in too many great films to name, high fidelity being one...& keiffer sutherland, chris's brother, was also in lost boys, & an f ton of other classic 80's things, still working, he was on the tv show 24
As a teen, Jerry O'Connell starred in the superhero TV series, MY SECRET IDENTITY. As an adult, he starred in the movie JOE'S APARTMENT (1996), and in the science fiction TV series SLIDERS.
It sad that Gordie Lachance's parents don't seem to care about him as if he was not planned and the dad made it clear his dead brother was there favourite and he was nothing to them and they would not be as upset if it was him that died
as has prob been said....in all fairness, the first scene of the film is old gordy reading the newspaper with the headline about chris's murder/death plastered across the front, which is why he wrote the story...he came a long way from the writing of the "lard ass type stories" days
Don't know why you thought this film came out in 2000, in came out in1986, I was still a kid then. That definitely was not Charlie Sheen playing Teddy who was already an adult by then. Teddy was played by then child actor Corey Feldman. It was never implied that Ace killed Gordie's brother, I never got that. In the short story that this movie is based on, his brother Dennis was in the army when he was killed in a jeep accident, still don't know why you guys came to the conclusion Ace caused. Good reaction though.
Hardly anyone ever catches the newspaper headline in the opening scene “Attorney Christopher Chambers fatally stabbed in restaurant” that grown up Gordon is holding in his opening narration. 37:05 If your idea is true, it certainly explains Gordie's (apparent) willingness to pull the trigger on Ace.......
I still believe “The Stand” to be his greatest work. If you love Tom Hanks you should watch cloud atlas. I believe it’s a true work of art.
Hi guys!
❤R.I.P RIVER PHOENIX
lol - so confident in all his wrong guesses.
Ace, Kieffer Sutherland, this was a preview of him as Jack in awesome series 24. Chris, is even better older in Running on Empty, bmneed to watch it. And 24!
Never heard anyone suggest that Gordy's brother was killed by the older gang before. Not sure about that theory.
Kiefer Sutherland and Cory Feldman in Lost Boys. Wil Wheaton as Himself in The Big Bang Theory TV Series several episodes.
The best coming of age movie ever made
These are great films you have watched but you absolutely NEED to watch Misery too.
Sadly River Phoenix who is the brother of Joaquin Phoenix died. He was good friends with Feldman and Feldman was there when he died.
Released in 86” the year I graduated
Don't bring a knife 🔪 to a gunfight. 🔫
nice, a similiar movie i recommend is the sandlot 1993
yeah, it came out in 86, 87....oh, & yeah, pennies in the 1950's were like dollar bills today, lol
Nice pull Oliver. Kylie what were you thinking?
as has prob been said....in all fairness, the first scene of the film is old gordy reading the newspaper with the headline about chris's murder/death plastered across the front, which is why he wrote the story...he came a long way from the writing of the "lard ass type stories" days
Good reaction though.
you should deff watch "misery" a lot of reactors watched, also Steven king
The book or the story written by Stephen King was called "The Body" Where at the end of the story they beat up Chris and Gordy and their friends
Cant wait to see what else you react to I've been a horror movie fan for 34 years so i can recommend a ton of well known and not so well known movies
Did he just say this movie is from 2000!? 🤦♂️🤯 Oh boy..
in the book the Jeep accident is explained
You have to watch the big Lebowski.
37:03 jeep crash… late 50’s… probably the Korean war
If yous seen the big bang theory Sheldon best friend is one of the main characters in this, lol will wheaton
River Phoenix and corey feildman josh weaton chris connely, my bad if they are not spelled rite😂
Who else thought the famous person was going to be Wil Wheaton 😂
Read The Body by Stephen King. All of the questions you have about this movie will be answered. It’s not a full novel. Just a short story.
Shawshank and Stand By Me are from novellas from the same book Different Seasons
Imagine taking a body all that way back? No way.
They'd get into trouble for doing it......
