There is so much musicianship in the MI and it really shines in concert - not only the playing, but the singing too! Makes sense - they are band kids, admitted to the U of if I, and the majority of whom attended high schools in Illinois - one of the most highly rated public school systems in the country! They have no choice but to be good :-) Seriously, though, they are students who put in all that hard work over so very many years - they should be very proud of what they have accomplished. Well done, Illini!
This is called playing in Concert. The best real sound in open air I have ever seen. Illinois is a crowded house and this concert makes the air real. Hail Illinois, Brian K
OMFG! Yet another fact of the sexism of 20th Century America before 1970. I didn't know that. Women also could not get a credit card in their own name. And this is the patriarchy Republicans want to take us back to.
This is definitely not from the 60s, but I struggle to see any girls in the MI. The haircuts look like the 80s and the block I logo is either pre-round Chief Head, which was in the 90s, or post, say 2010 or later. The poster said he thinks it is from 2012.
Band Director: BAND TEN HUT! Band: *HO* Band Director: WHOS GOT THE BEST BAND IN THE LAND!!?? Band: *ILLINOIS* Band Director: *BAND DISMISSED!!!* . Band: *UNGAWA*
@Cole Ludwig My senior year was the last time we saw Chief and the feeling was that the University pushed the ban sooner due to the basketball team's mediocre success that season as they were speculated to go to the NIT and host a home game. Since the NCAA did not allow schools with a Native American mascot to host NCAA events, the ban went into effect quickly so that U of I could capitalize on the dollars that would come in as a host school. Team ended up making the NCAA Tourney so it was a waste. Not a 100% certainty but many of my classes discussed this as well as being a hot topic in the student body.
@@tdahl824 One of the big errors that was perpetuated and never adequately corrected was beginning to call Chief Illiniwek a "mascot." He was NEVER a "mascot." He was ALWAYS a "symbol."
Not bad, but not nearly as good as the old war chant. As a Penn state, Illinois brought their band a few years ago, (I think) and on 34d downs the the war chant echoing through beaver stadium was eerie and rich with tradition. Such a shame the "re-brand" of Illinois as has essentially coincided with the bottoming out of the Fighting Illini athletic programs.
Well, it was sad that this marching band had to deal with the dismantling of the often-racist mascot known as Illiniwek. Remember in past years when the Chief did a freeze of motion on "Hail to the Orange", and after that, he runs across the band hopping, leaping, doing wolf jumps and all that. But it is sad that for those who are pro-Chief that that mascot had to go, but this did not mean the end of the world-famous college marching band in the United States - which was the Marching Illini.
I wasn't around for this, but for concerts like this, we usually perform all of the halftime shows that we did over the previous year as well as traditional tunes. Some people probably just forgot to remove their flip folders from when they were performing halftime shows.
I bet the trombone player is related to the cameraman!!!
Great songs great video.. thanks for sharing!
Hey, as a Trombone player, I can't say I'm mad.

Charles Smith - The chief was never a mascot. He was the proud symbol of the university. He only came out during the three in one.
@@ItIsJustJudy So right. Thank You.
Best band in the land and they use flip charts???
brysanna nowadays we have to memorize all of these songs to even make it into the band :3
Give them a break...they are trombonists afterall.

"So dumb."
Let me guess, you're so relieved that the Chief has been retired. Your kind are strange bunch: you tend to react quite similarly.
LandInbetween and they tend to all be white.....
It's dumb that they got rid of him.
The Chief? Chief is based on tryouts, so whoever shows up shows up.
Bring back the Chief!
